Tommy Mottola was acussed of doing Payola for Mariah. All of her songs were played to death on the radio even when the actual physical sales didn't match. Some of her earliest number ones were not as organic as the ones after their divorce when he was saboting her behind the scenes in the late 90s and early 00s. I Don't Wanna Cry, Love Takes Time, Someday all went number one after Vision of Love but they are mostly forgotten today. The Jackson 5 first 4 records went number one and are still getting played till this day from I Want You Back to ABC, I'll Be There which Mariah famously covered in 1992 on her MTV unplugged. The Love You Save is the most underrated one tho. But these are mostly classic records. Vision of Love is the only classic off of her debut but she had a big machine behind her bc Tommy who was the head of Sony wanted a female act from his label to compete with Whitney (Arista/Clive Davis), Madonna (Warner/Maveric) and Janet (Virgin records)

Never was that into Mariah. Not the voice or the music beyond the earlier stuff. Of the vocal trinity(Whitney, Celine, Mariah), she is the weakest singer: she has the worst technique of them and the smallest voice. Her whistle notes are pretty crap as well. Most of the time they sound like weak, unsupported squeals. This is coming from a trained classical singer who knows what a whistle note is supposed to sound like. She had a 5-year voice basically where she sounded decent. Anything after 1995 is just meh. Whitney started her career in ‘84 and sounded amazing up until ‘94 - ‘95, then she got too involved with drugs and ruined her voice. Otherwise, she would’ve probably continued singing well. Céline is brilliant even today, at 53. Her voice has obviously darkened and changed, but she has the best technique out of the 3.
