Attention native speakers of Chinese / Japanese and learners alike! ✍️🔎 How good is your 漢字 (Kanji) character recognition?
In this video, I'll test you with 10 very common characters used in both Chinese and Japanese languages. These characters are standard in the HSK and JLPT sets so even learners 📚 of Chinese and Japanese should know them ... Yet, even native speakers, especially from the younger generation, might find themselves challenged when faced with these handwritten forms which would have been standard written forms for people only a generation ago!
These forms vary from semi-cursive 行書 style to full cursive 草書 forms - but would have been common in standard pen style 硬筆 versions of these characters.
This video is for both native speakers wanting to reconnect with the handwritten beauty of their language and language learners aiming to broaden their knowledge and get the language into your muscles.
Don't miss my other clips on developing a mature style of character handwriting, as well as Japanese 'Hentaigana' forms of characters.

I watched your other video about the difference between Cantonese and Mandarin. I am very pleased that there are people from other country and region that is that enthusiastic on language on the whole and Cantonese (ofc im biased as I am from Hong Kong) and would really like you to react and decipher the lyrics of the song 某種老朋友, it is by Terence Lam and it is written by one of the most talented lyricist 林夕, would really like to see your reaction and view on the poetry on the song. Thank you for really paying attention to our language and other languages as well.

Hi Stu I have been looking at Hokkien and am amazed how well it has preserved sounds from Middle Chinese. I think it is more accurate to Japanese loans too. Thanks from NSW

呢條片有點誤導。片中所講嘅,並唔係現代認知嘅hand writing,亦同現代人常用電腦/ 手機打字冇關係。 大陸我唔知,但近數十年香港嘅學校係唔會教草書嘅,小學時書法堂只會教楷書,所以一般人只懂寫楷書/行書,而草書嘅結構係好唔同,要另外再學嘅。(我是個習書法的人,相信可以畀到少少意見🙂)

草書is a cousin of楷書 instead of a descendent. They are both descendent off 隸書 but has taken different paths. And thus some of the words look completely unlike their counterparts

I got about 6 of them right. I literally drew the pattern 5 times, trying to feel what character it is.. I had written in a easy to read 行書 style cursive growing up

我自己細個都係學楷書,行書同草書都係睇歷史文獻時先會見到,用意通常都唔係為左閱讀,係為睇資料既正本。我地以前考試卷有d要係一個鐘以內寫千字,寫草書的話如果考官睇唔到分分鐘冇分,好多同學都變左寫簡體因為通俗易懂,除非係考中文寫作先會用繁體

😅The source of some character is wrong. example~caoshu of 世His source is the character 卋or 㔺~ Some cursive writing (caoshu)structures are derived from seal script(zhuanshu), not regular script(kaishu).

I can assure you 90% of the native population would fail from the 1st one aleady lol because cursive is not a common knowledge and only people who are into calligraphy would learn them.

To be fair, for one never writing Chinese with style called 行書 or even 草書, one cannot show the strength, speed, angle etc of original. And for mainland Chinese who use simplified Chinese which focus only on sound of characters or simple stroke, their root to original Chinese has been cut completely. Their situation is very like Korean.
