There is a TSB 08-046-18 for software update to radio RA3 or RA4. One of the symptoms is battery drain.

I not too long ago posted a Ram battery draw that was a 2-part video also, it was my worst draw diagnosis to date, and I spent 15hours on it. This is similar vibes of frustration. Good work on chasing it down, for me personally I just haven't used much or had success with the bus data tracing for draw unlike the amperage draw chase. Mine was drawing from modules being awake, but not an actual faulty module and not even an incorrect input. Curious what yours will be, thanks for sharing. 👍👍

One thing I forgot to mention is that I’ve had several experiences where OnStar would wake up the telematics module, and it would run for a long period of time, causing a drain on the battery. Typically this issue was solved with a software update to the telematics module.

I just love to follow your train of thought in these head scratcher cases, Jake! I was betting on the radio (usual culprit), but this looks like a more complex interaction. Can't wait for Part 2 🙂

Sometimes taking power away from the control unit can lead up to "hard reset" maybe that is what happened to the hub since it stopped acting up. Thanks for another great video!

I had a BMW 535d with ZF6HP26 I think it was, that was one gear selection off like you had.. That was with the Autel Ultra. I then hooked up the Snap-On Edge to it, and then the gear selection showed up correct on the scanner !?!!

man got to live those star connectors . wish all cars had them makes for splitting the circuit so much easier . wow could be double trouble . one does wonder why that radio fuse was out

Did you forget to bring your breakout box? I know you have one. seems like it would have made testing CAN bus signals from obd port so much easier. Great video and diagnostics showcase.

Voltage and Amperage on a meter must always default to A/C. Reason being is if someone is using one of these in a house, and has it on D/C by accident, they will read 0V on any A/C signal with a mean voltage of 0V, even if there is 240V RMS on the wire. This can lead someone to believe a breaker is off when it is actually on. So, long story short, people can die if a meter goes to D/C by default, but not the other way around.

Start with the fuses and follow the battery drain. I think you are on the right track now. Next you find a 10 inch ball of wires under the dash. Lol

Fuses won’t really help much when it’s module keeping other modules awake. You’ll have multiple fuses showing current draw.

I love that UNI-T 2amps capable current clamp. Its very accurate down to DC 100 mlilliamps. So cheap, yet so useful. After a few years in my humid country, the red rubberized bezel grip will start becoming dust, but its ok.

@@autodiagyt You can reprogram the UNI-T from 00.00mV to 0.000mV and change the 2 amp from glitching out near 2 amps. After reprograming it while auto at the 2 amp scale to about 6 amps. I reprogramed my UNI-T and works great. Also change the amp setting so it first goes to DC instead of AC current setting.

Manufactures need to provide each modules id on the network that the scan tool can read. The scan tool should be able to read each modules activity. Similar to a misfire counter. The module with the most activity would be the one to look at. Would save many wasted hours trying to figure this out manually. Would also help indicate which module may be intermittent.

I agree but it was nice to have what he calls a "STAR connector" that allows him to disconnect brances on a CAN system.

I think all systems should have something like the star connector. It makes network Diag easy easy.

It is sort of in the packet data. Each packet a module transmits is for an specific PID, and many time that data is only provided by an specific module. For instance engine speed can only be provided by engine or transmission control unit if they are separate things, but even then one know this is not coming for ABS. Again not an specific ID of the transmitting module, but tells who are the possible senders. Not what you might be asking for. Also, if each packet had a sender ID, that will take mode time to transmit, and sometimes there might not be enough free time on the bus. Also CAN only allows for a small amount of bytes per packet, making it even more difficult to implement. When normal operation priority are higher than debug, we ran into these issues :(, but again understandable.

I can’t remember which car it is that there are two sensors for shifting indicators one on the tcm and one on the bcm if they get green crusty it causes a difference

I've got 2 godiag boxes and they both have some issues that are annoying so I got the splitter out but looks like it's not good either lol.

I had a similar problem on a toy sienna, and I came to find out that an installation of a video tv was tap to the can bus for power on the dome light look for something that do not belong

I havbe a federated auto just up the road from my shop. They offer just the "service info" part of Identifix for 19.99 a month. It does not come with "direct hit"

been dealing with a similar issue with my 2012 , my code reader cave me ( a potential code ) of low battery voltage but the same reader said the battery was reading at 13.9 which isn't low ! thinking it's something in the interior . I just keep it on the maintainer when parked in the garage .

That could be a history code setting when the battery is getting low.

No gateway module on this vehicle. Only a couple modules that got to both networks and can transfer from one to the other.

How do you like the autel ultra compared to the top don phoenix smart ? At work we have an ultra and other autels but personally not a fan a lot of the data pids are not in actual useful values or sometimes don’t give you the info you need

I like the graphing on the Phoenix Smart better. I like the ultra scope better. For the price I like the Smart better. I really only got an Ultra to try and become an Autel Remote Expert but so far it’s not looking like I’ll get accepted in.

I appreciate the quick response!! I agree graphing on any autel sucks imo. I’m in a toss up between a phoenix smart or plus but for price I think I’d do the plus cause I don’t do any programming at the moment and I wouldn’t use any of the jbox capabilities at the moment. Unless having a jbox interface like the smart is better ? What would be your take. Thank you !

1:39 Why go across DLC pins 6 AND 14 on a single channel scope? I'd have imagined you'd go across pin 6 and ground (4 or 5) then pin 14 and ground (4 or 5). Thanks in advance.
