I’ve been reading and watching Christy and Alonso’s reviews for over a decade now, but this is the first time I’ve ever left a comment. I had to because watching Challengers in IMAX last night was one of the most exhilarating movie experiences I’ve ever had. My heart was pounding in the final 10 minutes and I had a giant grin on my face. These characters are so flawed and manipulative, but also sympathetic and fascinating. It’s a brilliant script, Guadagnino directs like no other, and the performances kill. I’m glad you guys did this stream because you two are always so insightful. You guys remind me why I love movies so much. Keep up the great work!

Trevor that is awesome! So glad you had such a blast -- we'll have to revisit it in IMAX too. Thanks so much for hanging out with us for so long and sharing your experience.

I love the scene where Art sees Tashi and Patrick in the hotel lobby before they vanish. He never brings it up or addresses it. I think it sets up the windstorm affair quite nicely. He probably woke up, saw Tashi was gone, and knew exactly where she was.

Sorry to have missed this one live. -- superb rundown. Thought it a marvelous fillum, completely unpredictable, viscerally exciting, and continually subtle without ever being opaque. As someone whose early dance career was halted by a dislocated kneecap onstage, THAT moment made me literally squirm away from the screen, ah, sense memory. Personally, found the ending spectacular, not least the clue of the ball placement in Patrick's racket. Again, it's Zendaya's world, and we just live in it. Both Mr. Faist and Mr. O'Connor lived up to that -- one of the most convincing, multivalent triangles we've seen since "Past Lives," and truly sensual without being salacious. Now we want the soundtrack -- magnificent Atticus/Trent contribution, and Mr. Guadagnino can clearly handle populist material. Remarkable. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Great touch adding the Applebee's. Any die hard tennis fan knows that the players all frequent there when they're at the Western & Southern open b/c it's basically the only late night restaurant in the area. Also loved the little tray of peaches during the Atlanta tournament flashback at the beginning. Nice little Call Me By Your Name nod.

Right? For a tennis movie that is rated R and not that mainstream in it's structure and appeal, I thought it was great to see it make 15 mil. I was thinking it would make less than 10. Also great for Luca to have one of his films get this many butts in seats from the jump.

No one is going to talk about the meaning of the ending? During the last point, it looks like Art was angry and slowing, he was smiling? Did he understand or did he forgive? What is the meaning of the ending? Will Tashi stay with Art? Coach Patrick?

Regarding Zendaya's ability to DRAW an audience: "According to PostTrak exit poll reported by Deadline, 55% of audiences said they went to see the film because of Zendaya. In fact, this weekend, Zendaya movies accounted for around 26% of the overall box office with the re-release of Dune: Part Two" Also... this is a THROUPLE movie that many found questionably marketed. Then there's the FACT that Zendaya has already outperformed Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone's post Spidey-verse tennis movies - and NOW she's supposed to make bi-sexual men sharing a huge kiss, in a tennis centered film, mainstream? Lol C'mon now. Not everyone is as "open" and I saw plenty of "pushing woke" comments among the complimentary ones, in the movies promotional acxount comment section, along with Twitter/X. She scored Luca Guadagnino his biggest debut. Zendaya has carried this film on her back to get this art-house homoerotic movie across the finishline respectably. ;)

I have no idea who Zendaya is other than Dune. Luca Guadagnino is the main reason I saw this plus the tennis action in IMAX. Ironically the tennis world seems to have no interest in this based on my quick peruse. And also pro tennis has no openly male gay player pretty sure the tennis world is the last pro sport in this respect?

Spoiler Alert: During the climax, Patrick signals to Art he's slept with Tashi while Patrick is match point down, which throws Art off and allows Patrick to get to deuce, then win the game to get to 6-6 and the tiebreak. Art does eventually amp up and get back in the match, but I don't think Patrick did the signal to help Art, but rather to save match point and stay alive, although maybe he was also trying to get Art going as well, for a killer tie-break? I enjoyed the film, but really wanted to see the final score- I get they were focusing on other things like "great tennis" and mending relationships, but I wanted to know the outcome of the match, damn it. Maybe a sequel will go there, then explore what happens next for the three characters (will Art retire and Tashi coach Patrick to a major title? Wouldn't mind seeing how the next year plays out for this trio).

Tashi wasn't that Ruthless. ;) She was a wounded woman dealing with two silly souls who cared for not only HER but for one another - using her just as much as (if not more so) she used them. The.guys, including Art, displayed some pretty awful Character traits, but as the WOMAN playing a role that men usually inhabit, she is looked at harsher. I truly felt for Tashi.

I wish some journalist asked the director/writer if they gave Patrick that awkward service motion on purpose and why. No not the racquet neck thing. The racquet behind the head then toss. If you watch tennis a lot you’ll know that’s not a popular way pros start a serve.
@stephenwaters37708 ай бұрын
I do think they touch on that in the movie though, when Tashi calls him out for tennis being his way of self expression rather than a game, which is why he serves in his own special way to stand out from everyone else. And it doubles as a plot device so we know what it means when he changes from his distinctive serve in the final scene.

In the way that “every villain is the hero of their own story”, I think Zendaya is the villain of the two guys story. At least somewhat intentionally. She says she doesn’t want to be a home wrecker, but she kind of does? This doesn’t make her an irredeemable person. It’s just complicated. When asked about her scream early in the movie she says that is how she says that that is how she expresses the moments where tennis is like love. The players are in perfect sync with each other and creating something more than themselves. She’d obviously been trying to regain that feeling through her actions in the film, probably not always consciously, and she does in that final moment.
