Recording of a panel discussion on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day 2024 on 30 April 2024 at the Diplomatische Akademie Wien - Vienna School of International Studies organised by the DA's alumni association, club.da, in co-operation with the Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia (RCVMT)
World Press Freedom Day has been celebrated worldwide since 1993 to raise awareness about the
significance of press freedom and the importance of the independence of the media. This panel will discuss the most relevant and compelling topic of the particular challenges journalists face in conflict zones.
The work of journalists in conflict zones is full of danger and security risks. Denial of access, censorship, harassment, arbitrary detention, and attacks are alarmingly frequent. Independent reporting is often unwelcome in conflict zones. Furthermore, conflict situations are often fertile ground for mass disinformation campaigns that undermine proper understanding of the developments.
A team of experts will share their valuable insights with the audience and we are looking forward to a meaningful conversation about the difficulties of reporting reliable news and images that truthfully portray conflicts, human rights violations, and breaches of international law.
