OK, I gotta share a story about this talk, not so much the talk but the after. As usual Matt Dillahunty stuck around to talk and answer question. And although I was in the background having my own conversation I was paying attention. After talking to a couple that had their kids with them, well at least one, a little girl of 6 or 7 I'm guessing, they thank him and turned to leave and just as they we walking away the little girl turned around and gave Matt a hug - Just about the most precious thing you can imagine because it was not only unprompted but totally unexpected by all. Too cute. I guess Matt is about as scary to kids as a big fluffy teddy bear. I was thrilled to be there for the talk and very happy to be there for that moment.

This is such an excellent talk. Matt hit a home run here. I can say as an atheist who is surrounded on my wife's side of the family by theist (Mormons), this talk makes me want to be more tactfully outspoken. In a sense, come out of the closet. My wife now knows after years of denial that I am indeed an atheist but still struggles to accept it... I don't believe I should have to hide this fact from her family as I have done for many years. I liked the part where Matt basically said if they already know you're a good person its hard to go back on that just because they've found out you're an atheist and that alone can help change the minds of the hardened theist who think atheist are such horrible people. It might even lead them to asking questions, which is ultimately what I would want. Matt is one of my favorites. Keep up the good work!

@r2thebeach3239 жыл бұрын
+youweechube I hear you. I'm a pretty laid back kind of guy but I know that people can get pretty emotional when talking about religion. My first step really is to let it be known that I am an atheist. If they chose to start asking questions at that point, I can take it from there. When the discussions came up with my wife it was amazing how unwilling she was to accept that I was an atheist. She couldn't fathom that someone could not have a believe in god. Believe me she was emotionally charged but I survived.

In the debate Matt discussed, if anything is going to affect the mindset of those Christians, I believe it will be in Matt's saying, "I don't know." I'm hoping it will make them think hard about how and why their church thinks it has answers for everything.
@smm57709 жыл бұрын
+Eric Morisch The statement "I don't know" cannot be a delusion by definition. "I don't know" is a knowledge claim while a delusion refers to beliefs, not knowledge. Non belief in god is the default position. We are not born with that belief. It's something that is proposed to us and some people choose to believe it while some of us cannot. Much of the world's suffering certainly can be blamed on man including the invention of religion.

how can an atheist affect the mindset of someone who knows God?
@bazingaburg8264 Жыл бұрын
True Ministry "A felt relationship with God/Christ" is what most people mean when they say they know God. Am i right to assume that includes you? We have learned to misattribute sensations we couldn't place until trusted person 1 through 5 or so assured us "that's what God feels like", when being moved or feeling inspired are, i'd argue, likelier contenders for what we feel. Poetry and philosophy evoke no less emotion, but they weren't the events everybody celebrated twice a week growing up. Repetition is the mother of learning and we will learn what trusted circles drum into us since we were in diapers. Mass is a ceremony of emotional priming, meant to spread the good word. Hallelujah, brilliant. Matt talked on the subject of appeals to personal experience(1) if you wanna check it out. Another lecture was called "Do they really believe that?"(2), which makes for a nice companion piece that reminded me to not be so militant in my exchanges with theists. "How can an atheist affect the mindset of someone who knows God?" Same as the other way around, sharing our beliefs and convictions, values and experiences, whichever underlying reasoning facilitated them. That case either convinces or it doesn't, maybe not then and there, maybe our perspectives are so foreign to one another that we overlook whatever common ground we share. I like to think not all atheists are depraved, duplicitous damnation lures in your eyes. Perhaps i'm the wrong messenger and it will be received better from somebody you trust. I hope your account is still active :D 1. Atheist Debates - Appeals to Personal Experience 2. Atheist Debates - Do they really believe that?

Two choices: existence by 1. Universe is self-existing (Humanist Manifesto III). Is self-creation implied, then? Inanimate matter > alive. 2. Existence created by an omnipotent Being/Infinite Intellect/Powers. Some scientists invoke the sci-fi scenario --- maybe aliens seeded Earth? This would imply that in 11 billion years or so, a species was able to develop the creation of life. George Wald famously said that there were only two possibilities, life by spontaneous generation or by Special Creation. He said that while he understood that spontaneous generation was impossible, he chose to believe in the impossible, because the alternative, Special Creation, was not tenable. One protein molecule (one with 100 amino acids, 20 different kinds) would need to beat odds of 1 in 10^130. i.e., 10^130 possible combinations the amino acids can line up. The 100 must line up in the exact order. According to Borel's statement that no event will occur with more than 1 in 10^50 odds, I wouldn't put money on even one protein molecule self-existing, even if infinite time were allowed, let alone one billion years, or ten billion years. There are supposedly 10^80 molecules in the universe. To get even the first living cell going would require DNA / RNA molecules, a multitude; this is assuming that chemical reaction would be sufficient, without an 'X factor.' Now some people are welcome to put their money on odds of 1 in 10^130 for the first protein molecule ... and the odds for the first living cell, etc. Furthermore, even if there were a first living cell, it would need to self-create the ability of cell division, otherwise no second cell. On the other hand, Jesus Christ fulfilled all of the major prophecies of the Old Testament. On the day of crucifixion He fulfilled more than 30 at odds of 1 in 10^128. The odds, of course, are even greater with the rest of the prophecies. For prophecy students, I recommend Dr. James A. Bloom's (physicist) study on the prophecy of Tyre, since this is a hot bed. Also recommend his 80 page paper on existence of God. Since 1901 to now the majority of Nobel laureates have identified themselves as Christian. Raymond Damandian, inventor of the MRI, should have received a Nobel according to at least one Nobelist. RD was once an atheist. Ditto Francis Collins and many other present day scientists. Now, if some will entertain the idea of extraterrestrial seeding, surely the idea of an Infinite Intellect/Power should also be on the table? For now, Mother Nature can't create life; nor can she morph species to species. The number of flora and fauna number at least 100 million that have been cataloged. And there is not one transitional fossil in the bunch. On another tack, I would also caution about siding with the Soviet Union's view from the 1930s to its dissolution. In 1939 an American communist testified before US Congress of the Soviet's Psych-politics (PP) program, i.e., brainwashing. Among their chief targets was Christianity: develop in the people a 'foaming hatred' of Christianity. He was murdered shortly after. Even to the late 20th century, the SU had a dept. of atheism numbering 20,000, whose sole goal was to promote atheism and destroy Christianity. Despite that, there were a number of underground Christians. Some noteworthy atheists of the period became Christians when they encountered 'real' Christians.

Just found this site! Community, fun , wisdom and logic. Compassion and excellent argument. All focused on dispelling, as an illusion, the elephant in the room. What's so poignant, is that the stronger and more profound the argument the stronger the sense of well being and momentry illusion that the elephant is a figment, not there. But in the the gaps between speakers and such the revelry is not of sufficient depth to stop the said animal once again taking shape. If anything, the need for attendance at such a gathering is more an indication of personal doubt of one's unbelief than any more conscious reason. In my subjective opinion.
@n.presley9179 жыл бұрын
+Mark yelland-brown a few purposes of 'such a gathering' which may have eluded you are that skepticism that one keeps to oneself is (a) not doing the rest of the world much good, (b) harder to apply consistently without comparing notes, (c) a powerful factor in isolation, depression and cynicism for more than a few.

+Keize Montoya Turek's response sounds like textbook prepositionalism, the same kind practiced by Eric Hovind and Sye Ten Bruggencate. Presuppositional apologetics is the intellectual equivalent to flipping over the game board and declaring that you've won. The best way to demolish the arguments of a Christian presuppositionalist is to pick up a Quran and (sarcastically of course) argue the presupp's every point from the Muslim perspective. Presuppositionalism is designed to go after atheists using word games and semantic tricks, but this is all a distraction from the actual issue. Its only argument is "I'm right because I'm right, and you can't prove me wrong," but falls flat on its face when put up against the beliefs of another, equally absurd religion.

I was just talking about how i want the world to be today (i probably do that more than i think) and the major thing is to work twords global economic equality. How can we tell our children "the world's not fair" like it's just a fact that we can't do anything about? I want to live in a world where everyone has enough. We could then, quickly and more easily obtain any knowledge we seek. The survival of our species, planet, and (as far as we can be sure) all "complex life" in the universe depends on us humans getting our shit together. This planet we take for granted is a 5 billion year old organic spacecraft. One that we have only begun to understand. The world wasn't built by man pretending to comprehend physics. It is only by physics that anything is here or not. Our miniscule understanding of how it all works can only be influenced by what we can show to be correct and constant. By us all sitting on this one planet, completely dependant on this one planet, we accept our future extinction.

Theologians have often handled this paradox ........that there are two wills in God, sometimes referred to as God's sovereign will and His revealed (perceptive) will, or His will of command and His will of decree. And also by understanding that in God's view and plan, it is good that there is evil in this world. Note-that is not to say that evil is itself good; only that evil serves a worthy end and is, therefore, an important and integral part of God's good purposes. (Christiananwsersnet)

I hope with a passion that the world he describes will one day come to pass. I do not think it will happen whilst religion and other backward thought control mechanisms exists.

How the hell is that book trick performed? :) I saw a video of "fool us" with a similar one, but the guy was using special glasses there. There is also a special cut pages approach, but it does not fit for a small book with lots of pages.

He's good with the lay man's perspective and equally does well battling with real and so called intellectuals. However, one who adopts theism devoutly, will always be more ignorant that one who doesn't believe on faith. As a matter of common senses and the basics of social functioning.

My parents would make me go to a Baptist church as a child. The entire time I was a kid and I watched and listened to the adults speak, I always had the same thought in my head. These people are full of SHIT! I was not familiar with that term at the time, but it fits perfectly now. Today, I have a son, and he has never gone to church, been indoctrinated with bullsh**t, and has never felt that he is broken and needs fixing from some invisible man in the sky. He is on his way to becoming a perfect gentleman and a critical thinker. I am a proud husband and dad.

I wish I had some theists in my life to argue with. Most people I talk to ( and I talk to very few sadly) are more taking up a weak deist position now a day's ( god is love and does not involve himself in human affairs etc) Most people also do not seem interested in talking about this. I have even had Theists come to my door preaching apologetics, and after confronting them with my thoughts that their beliefs are evil and harmful they usually just want to leave. Maybe it is something about me but it does not seem like many people are as interested in these conversations as I am.

The Biblical texts outline sources and legal status of slaves, economic roles of slavery, types of slavery, and debt slavery, which thoroughly explain the institution of slavery in Israel in antiquity. Each section - Exodus 21, Deuteronomy 15, and Leviticus 25 - and..... Matthew 20: 20 -28: A series of remarks wherein Jesus recognizes it is ...Jesus’ view of slavery compares the relationship between god and humankind to that of a master and his slaves. Three instances where Jesus communicates this view include: Matthew 18:21-35: Jesus’ “Parable of the Unmerciful Servant”, wherein Jesus compares the relationship between god and humankind to that of a master and his slaves. Jesus offers the story of a master selling a slave along with his wife and children. Matthew 20:20-28: A series of remarks wherein Jesus recognizes it is necessary to be a slave to be “first” among the deceased entering heaven. Matthew 24:36-51: Jesus’ “Parable of the Faithful Servant”, wherein Jesus again compares the relationship between God and humankind to that of a master and his slaves.

On God making a progressive withdrawing of slavery because it is so hard and unrealistic for humans to immediately give up that sin. Imagine the first commandment saying "Back off a little on idolatry. Keep a few less other gods than you had before!"

No, sometimes everything seems OK. For example, our secular state has introduced mandatory course in Cathehism with something called Ethics as alternative. I was very interested which one my sister will choose for her sons, because she is the only one truly religious (my youngest sister believes god (any of them) to be a stupid waste of time, dad does no cares about existence of god, only about religious messing with our lives, I has always being an atheist and my mother is that belief in belief case).... Anyway my sister has chosen this Ethics for her oldest of her sons, and I hope she will not change her mind about the youngest. But there is another problem: she believes in Homeopathy and, OK, as long as it does not endangers lives of my nephews, who cares, but one can never know: what if any of them really falls ill? I thought video with James Randi and information about 1 million dollar trial would help, but it does not seem so, because James Randi is an abstract notion for her. And yes, I think she is a sound person (become religious because, for some reason, many people her believe, that couple must get married in church), but I have not got the slightest idea. I can explain her why I prefer mainstream medicine, what is needed to convice me that X works, or what can actually affect processes in the body), but....

Is the 'things and stuff' a Walking Dead reference? Lol The semi-megachurch down the street from me here in Austin TX is having a thing today on whether Science and Religion can coexist. Sure they can, in essence...but when you're taking both seriously and are of the mind that only one can be true, then you have a conflict. IMO, religion is on the losing side, because so much of the POINT behind it relies on having creationist beliefs. If you don't believe in the existence and fall of Adam and Eve, you don't have the foundation of the belief necessary for Jesus' existence and sacrifice to be real or make any sense in their own right. If you only believe in Jesus' message, why do you need Jesus? Because you can be a decent person (as long as we're taking everything Jesus said and did into account, not just the happy hippy shit) without Jesus or Christianity...or any of the horrible baggage that both come with. As for your mention of slavery being your go-to thing for morality in the Bible...my thing has, alternately, been that the Bible has more to say on all the different punishments that must be mete out in all the different situations where someone gets gored by a bull (Ezekiel IIRC) but there isn't a SINGLE passage in defense of a raped woman or an abused child. Not one word is said in their defense. In fact, raped women are disowned by their families/stoned to death or are sold to their rapists, and there's nothing at all said about kids...except describing HOW you can abuse them.

this is god: "i love you, you must love me or i will burn you in hell every day for eternity, also, i make you atheist". we spend out life on earth praising and worshiping god, so we can spend eternity praising and worshiping god if i'm due to be punished in the afterlife (for i am a sinner) why do i get punished in this life? 32:00 you make a point worth stressing, it's great fun to take the piss out of the stupidity of believers, but most religious people are otherwise good people, and how much can we as a whole benefit from good people thinking straight, and using their intellect instead of being god robots. there are malicious people in religion, but we actually need people "on our side" instead of antagonised by science and reason. the whole exercise is to get people to be reasonable, not just "do gods will". the only way to be a good christian is to be atheist.

Does he get everything he has with money that states in GOD WE TRUST or does he trade goats and chickens at Best Buy so he can own a TV set .Dont spend money with In God We Trust on it if you dont believe it. Oh wait...all athiests do that! If you really were devoted to the cause,you wouldnt do that and just starve to death.

You are pretty ignorant rutn. First there is so cause atheists are devoted to. Atheism just simply means we are not convinced any fairytales you believe in are actually true. Second, although it is a shame that the US Govt. decided to violate the constitution in 1954 by adding "in god we trust" on our currency it's not like we have a choice in alternative currency. So until the govt. wises up and have it removed we have no choice but to use it. I just look at "god" to mean zues or odin.
