The weirdest thing about Lets Play was how it is clear that Sam was meant to end up with Marshall but then they introduced his girlfriend and everyone ended up liking her so the author kept their relationship, and now Sam is getting it on with her boss whilst Marshall does his own thing. Like what? At this point the male lead has become a side character

Honestly, I don't know how much of a plot was changed due to Webtoon's interference, but even now that they and Mongie parted ways and she'll attempt to publish Let's Play somewhere else, I don't think it's possible to enjoy this webtoon anymore without a major rewrite. Like, I LOVED Let's Play back in the beginning. I liked that it wasn't just a simple love story, that characters actually had other relationships and that their traumas were explored. But something went downhill when the whole plot stopped mentioning gaming stuff pretty much entirely in favor of NSFW tease. Also the characters I loved the most, a.k.a. Sam's dad and Charles, ended up becoming more and more disturbing (like, yeah, sensitive father joke was funny at first, but making him evolve into a role of someone who's ready to rip a guy's head because he merely BREATHED in his daughter's direction...).

My issue with webtoons is that they don't seem to end?? I've been working on writing one and I just couldn't imagine it not having an ending after 2-3 seasons. I always start of loving a certain webtoon (True Beauty, Let's Play, Lore Olympus, I Love Yoo, etc) and then forget about them because they become so boring and dragged out. Like, I just want a proper ending and not some slice of life comic when I never signed up for that in the first place 😭 Some of my favorite webtoons are the ones that didn't drag out and had a decent ending with a consistent plot. *I know I kinda dissed I Love Yoo but I definitely respect the writing in terms of it being more realistic & not too lewd.

As a webtoon canvas creator (called Discover when I first started) and someone who has read Let's Play since the early days of its run on Webtoon Originals (called Featured back then), I have to say...I cannot bear to read Let's Play anymore. It was an alright webtoon honestly, for a little while...up until it started to lose the original plot almost entirely and stick to NSFW-filled plotlines, and bad, derailed character development. Also, yes, it was obvious Marshall was based on Markiplier and possibly other KZbinrs, but mainly him... aaaand Sam being a physical self insert was also obvious. I mean, have y'all seen Mongie's art when she draws herself? Just try to tell me I'm wrong about that lmao. It's also extremely obvious that Mongie is most likely pushing her own k*nks and fave NSFW stuff into the webtoon to the point that it just disturbs me. It never was this bad originally, as you all can see from the first 10 chapters here. Don't remember when it started to get all NSFW-filled exactly but it happened slowly at first, but then it hit readers like a truck...like bruh, no matter what episode you were on after a certain turning point, it was all just innapropriate and sexual literally almost all the time. All of the original character development that was planned either got derailed eventually or the plot points that Mongie made during certain parts just vanished without reason or warning. The only two characters who have good plot development would be Marshall and his now ex gf (sorry to spoil but I assume most of y'all have read the comic if you're here so oop). Oh my god the love triangle- The second they started having the triangle between Sam, Charles, and Marshall, as well as hardcore hinted towards her getting with Charles (a character I do NOT like and didn’t come her for), I decided to dip. I came into the comic for a cute, possibly slow burn (though not THAT slow) romance between Sam and Marshall, kinda an enemies to lovers situation in which they learn to understand each other better as people and balance each other out. It would also talk a lot about game development, the actual industry, gaming culture online, indie developers, internet fame, etc. Maybe even a little bit about mental illness and how anyone can struggle with it (the panels where depression sat beside or loomed over Marshall were very interesting to me and I wanted to see it explored further). That was what I came in for, at least. But then they strayed away from the interesting parts, and even more importantly to me, they strayed away from Marshall and Sam’s relationship. That was the whole hook of the series, wasn’t it? So why add so many stupid love triangles? I feel like if a story’s hook is based specifically off of two characters potentially eventually sharing a romantic relationship, then you shouldn’t introduce love triangles that will disrupt that. If the hook involves loves triangles, or the hook doesn’t involve romance at all, then it’s mostly fine by me, as long as it doesn’t distract to much from the main plot. But if the love triangle completely disrupts and alters the very PREMISE of the series, then you shouldn’t have that love triangle. In fact, the entire hook of the series is basically forgotten. Jesus do I hate that stupid love triangle. Should’ve just kept it a two person romance with video games.

I thought the protagonist would have like a hard time leading with anxiety or something, but her attitude it's really really slow... I know it takes time (I have anxiety myself) also it's sometimes cringey, it's like she can't deal with something by herself (I understand that too, but still that's dangerous), I like the soft mature content time to time but now it's everything about it, and it's not even related now to videogames aaa

Considering the slow progress of the story, I would say making a review of ten chapters is like making a quantitative research with a small n. Plus knowing the story changes a lot after some events, reading only ten chapters doesn't prepare the readers for what's coming. It changes so much, goes from gaming to dating and sexuality

(Sorry for my bad eng, it's not my native language) A lot of people have been talking about how the story has gone downhill, (which I agree) but I wanna mention how the art did too get worse. At first, it was fine. The characters had pretty good proportions and perspective, the backgrounds and the objects were 3D assets which is ugly, BUT if you're used to reading webtoons, it's nothing new so it's pretty much okay. Now, the proportions didn't change but the scenes are pretty monotonous, idk how to explain, but i feel like the frames are too static, the perspective used aren't dynamic at all. There is no real lighting dynamic either, it's the same shadows, you won't see any variation in their position, their dimensions,... And their color palette isn't diverse enough. Backgrounds and objects both bother me too. Then, it was 3D assets, now, it's IRL photos and IRL objects... Although some people don't have any problem with this (and it's completely fine, maybe it's just me) but it breaks so much of the immersion in my opinion. Imagine you're reading a comic and you spot a real person in a sea of drawn 2D characters (I'm specifically referencing that one blood donation episode). The contrast is SO disturbing that I can't focus on the story. Now, I know the artist may have been on a tight schedule and may have been working on more than one thing, and that's fine. However, there hasn't been a single point where I stopped reading to admire a certain frame, a certain moment. On top of that, with the story that is getting nowhere, I, and many other people, are left with no reasons to continue reading this webtoon. It kind of makes me sad because it was one of the first webtoons that I read. I genuinely liked it.

**I hope this helps!!!** 1. A lot of people have been talking about how the story has downhill**,**(which I agree)but.. 2. …the backgrounds and the objects were 3D assets which is ugly **,** BUT.. 3. Now the proportions **didn’t** change, however the scenes are pretty monotonous. I feel like the frames are too static, and the perspective used **isn’t** dynamic in the slightest. 4. There is no real **lighting** dynamic either-- it has the same shadows, there is no variation in their position, and they are shaded the exact same. (I don’t know what you meant by “their shade.) 5. The objects and the backgrounds both bother me, too. 6. First, it was 3D assets, and now it’s evolved to actual photos and real objects. Although some people don’t have any problem with this, it breaks so much of the immersion in my opinion. 7. Imagine you’re reading a comic and you spot a real person in a sea of drawn 2D characters (I’m specifically referencing that one blood donation episode). The contrast between the people is so disturbing that I can’t focus on the story. 8. I know that the artist may have been on a tight schedule and may have been working on more than one thing, and that’s fine. However, there hasn’t been a single point where I stopped to admire a certain frame, a certain moment. (I like the way you worded this.) 9. The fact that the story has is getting nowhere is the fact that I, and many other people are left with no reasons to continue reading. 10. This makes me quite sad **because** it was one of my first Webtoons that I really liked. You did pretty good, but there were a couple of times where you used a FANBOY (For, and, not, but, or, yet) at the beginning of a sentence. Usually, people don’t do that, but it’s okay in some instances. For example you can do it if you’re writing choppy sentences in a book as a stylized choice. Example: (I kept running and running, trying my hardest to reach the end of the horizon. But it caught me before I could escape.) Speaking of FANBOYS, (the acronym for the words I listed above) the rule to use them is to put them in between complete sentences and put a comma before it. (Example: Sasha is nice**,**but my dog is nicer.) Remember that these words are not always FANBOYS, though! They can be used normally. For instance, in the sentence “Bella is not home yet,” the “yet” is not considered a FANBOY, so you don’t need a comma after it. Some of the sentences you wrote were also run-on sentences, which means that they are without a clear ending or without a FANBOY. Example: I love to write papers I would write one everyday if I had the time. To fix this sentence, you could simply add a FANBOY or any other word or phrase to make the sentence feel complete. Correction: I love to write papers **and** I would write one everyday if I had the time. **(This sentence does NOT need a comma before the FANBOY (and) because the second sentences doesn’t specify what the subject (one) is!!)** I don’t have time to go over every grammar rule, but here are some I noticed you made a mistake on in your writing. It was fun doing this, and I hope you have a good day!

And the whole interaction was just awkward and uncomfortable when reading it because she was about to kill him for what he said to Sam. He proceeds to takeoff his shirt. Talk to her about something her got the whole conversation about being more attracted to her or something. Which dude… again who the hell does this? in a little implications that he just likes it rough or something, but we learned that the redhead girl has a fear of men. so that whole interaction in the closet feels very uncomfortable to me, especially because you don’t know the girls are crushing her whole backstory and you’re just gonna do that.

I do remember liking the fact that both main characters aren't each other's love interests (doesn't Marshall have some super protective model girlfriend and Sam starts to get squirmy feelings for the blonde, Welsh guy?), but just the same I was vaguely irritated that I think they were running with the asexual (Sam) just needs to run into the right person trope and then their libido kicks into gear. I started reading it when I was in sixth grade I believe, (so around 11 or 12, I'm 14 almost 15 now). It feels as if the creator is dragging on the story for whatever reason. Don't get me wrong somethings could still be good even after being going for a while (attack on titian is a good example going on for about a decade) but sometimes a story should be wrapped up before it gets bad.

It's a shame tbh. I really liked some of the themes the characters had, like Marshall having depression and kinda having this "other personality" in front of the camera, and how making videos made him happy yk. Specially since it's true, my boyfriend is a KZbinr (he doesn't have depression fortunately) and I myself know how real it is very well too. It could have touched a lot of profound and sensitive themes like cheating, depression, anxiety, but instead it became this sexual shitshow that sexualizes it's characters, and even makes them infantilize Sam because she has anxiety... It's just gross.
@dangernoodledee111 Жыл бұрын
I was so hyped for them to explore Marshall’s depression and stuff involving how internet fame affects depression. That stuff is absolutely FASCINATING to me from a storytelling standpoint. You can do and explore so much with it, like how: - You can become dependent on validation from fans - You typically need to keep up a certain image and persona - Gaining mass attention can fuel anxiety - The guilt Marshall felt at the fact that his adoring fans destroyed an innocent person’s potential dream career - The dependence on making videos - The repetitive routine that can come with making weekly/daily KZbin videos and how that can make life feel very monotone, taking the joy out of a former passion - Literally anything I was actually battling depression when I first started reading the comic, and the idea that the upbeat, outgoing, loud, gamer bro Marshall could be dealing with the same issues I was felt oddly comforting. Especially with how they presented the way he seemed to bury it or hide it from others, despite it frequently looming over him, even at unexpected points. I was deeply excited to maybe see Sam and Marshall bond over dealing with mental illnesses that many of their friends and family don’t understand (as well as bond over other things, but that was one I was particularly excited for). And then they didn’t do anything with it. I stopped reading by the time I realized they wouldn’t give Marshall (who I thought I would hate, but is now the only one I like) the character exploration and growth he deserved. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Some parts definitely had cringe factors, but I enjoyed that we could see Sam grow, mature, and learn to stand up for herself. I also liked how Mongie explored the characters' trauma. I've read quite a bit and haven't read past the season where her dad had everyone as secret actors to protect his adult daughter. lol. I didn't really like that because it means most of the relationships she's had, were because of her father being overprotective.

@itsjooby Жыл бұрын
Also wanna bring up mongie(white woman)’s proclivity towards especially racey and inappropriate one-liners in the worst possible places, completely unprompted. (This also became much more common as the series progressed.) Retconning her own plot points (ex: link being head over heels in love with Sam for like 3/4 of his life and pining for her since they were kids, then having the opportunity to be with her and suddenly… “whoops! sorry, Sam! I’m just really not into you lol 😅”) Speaking of Link… we also love (sarcasm implied) that he left Sam to pursue a romanticizing abuse plotline with Angela! :) That’s a whole can of worms I don’t even wanna bother with but TLDR: he suddenly has a massive savior complex. The way he went from a favorite character of mine to the absolute worst character so mf fast is baffling to me. Not only that, but there’s the whole- dear god, the whole issue with Charles and Sam breaching boss/subordinate to boss/ASSISTANT boundaries and then Charles getting cold feet and borderline infantilizing Sam?? That whole situation is just so weird and feels so wrong. Blah blah blah something something charles is secretly married or something, his weird situationship with Marshall’s sister, I don’t know. I never got to the resolution of that conflict, if it even happened. Oh if that all wasn’t enough, Mongie notoriously made some NSFW Patreon prints of some of the characters- get this- in various traditional garbs related to the characters’ heritages…? Very racey, very strange. This was a pretty long time ago, but I remember people being very upset about the cultural appropriation. Rightfully so. Marshall being half Japanese definitely FELT (emphasis on felt, it’s my opinion) like an on-the-spot decision for mongie and was not a genuine plot point that was purposely set up and. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if she did it just to have something new to sexualize about Marshall. That’s right, nsfw nude prints of Marshall in traditional Japanese robes halfheartedly draped across his body while he covers his… wiener with a Japanese mask. Now I don’t remember what specific robes he wore or mask he covered up with, that’s my bad. That was a long while ago lol. But yeah, many people were upset about that. Ofc, it wasn’t just Marshall. Charles’ Welsh heritage was also sexualized in a very similar manner, in equally poor taste. I think she did the same with Link, but I don’t remember. The most I remember was how awful it was and how a lot of people were rightfully more than a little upset about it.

The intro with the review bombs combined with the obvious similarities to Markiplier is funny to me. Because after reading the first few chapters, I watch Mark's play through of Doom Eternal. Throughout the series, he criticizes the lore of the game, calling it confusing and convoluted. And the comments of each of those videos is of fans calling him out on misunderstanding it. To paraphrase one: "I know mark doesn't act like the smartest guy ever, but holy shti I've never seen such a massive misunderstanding of a game's lore." It got so bad that he just stopped talking about the game's story by the final episode. So basically, the gamer in the webtoon who has Stans who review bombs games he doesn't personally like is based off a KZbinr whose fans more often than no will call HIM out for bad takes on a game.

i read this webtoon every few months because reading it one by one every week will definitely bored me. it has its ups and down, but the quality does goes down as times go, in terms of story telling. because i love when it focuses on other stuff rather than romance such as sam's confidence, charlie's struggle with being committed and marshall's dealings with his depression. i hate how we just done with link even tho i kinda understand he's a "plot tool" for sam to realize the difference between physical attraction and attraction in general. i do hope we can get into the "other people" (like the illustration for their deepest struggle) more. it wasn't as bad as people make it to be, it just i understand if some people wants more than a shallow romance story, i get it.

i liked the webtoon at first where sam was getting justice about her game, until the entire thing became about their intimate lives😨 also she seemed to be blushing at every convenience and it was became so unnecessary

This video is the reason why I decided to at least re-read and catch up with the comic, and I ended up skipping entire chapters just to get to the parts with Marshall in them. Like, he and his ex gf are literally the only characters I like now (besides Sam’s guild leader and maybe a few of her other teammates in the guild). Marshall feels like the only one who’s really having an arc that isn’t just romance or horniness (though he is also somewhat casually sexualized in his ridiculously muscular build), and I actually like looking into his insecurities and mental health. He’s basically the only one I’d read the comic for. I’d actually kinda like to read a webcomic solely focused on him, with his arc being the main focus, because it’s actually intriguing. The hook of a seemingly typical overthetop gaming KZbinr struggling with depression and poor mental health, and realizing how emotionally fragile he is after accidentally ruining some random, hardworking indie developer’s career (in my ideal Marshall-centric webcomic, Sam wouldn’t be rich, she’d be middle class or even a struggling millennial type) seems so interesting to me, especially if you take away the horny parts. We could see Sam and Marshall’s evolving friendship, and who knows, maybe even an eventual romance if we pretend that Charles didn’t exist and Marshall and his ex gf broke up on good terms. Oddly enough, despite Charles now being the main love interest and Sam and Marshall’s new friendship being more of a subplot, I honestly think that Sam and Marshall have better chemistry than Sam and Charles. Maybe it’s because they were originally supposed to be the endgame couple? That, and their relationship is built on genuinely beginning to see and like each other as people, and they enjoying hanging out together and having honestly more intimate friendship based moments than any of the romantic or sexual moments in the series. Sam and Charles’ relationship seems to be built more in lust rather than interpersonal chemistry, and that’s why it doesn’t work for me. Sam and Marshall also build each other up as people in a way that makes them feel safe and supported, whereas Charles seems to build Sam up in ways that are very pressuring. And the one thing that wouldn’t have really made Sam and Marshall work is the fact that she used to be a huge fan of his and had more of a parasocial relationship with him at first, but the author actually wrote around that and built a personal relationship between them while breaking down the parasocial relationship. I’m not sure if Sam and Marshall would work as a couple, especially since Marshall still has some shit he needs to work through that I don’t think Sam is really ready to handle (Marshall’s ex gf seems to have a more stern personality that can cut to the chase and tell him that he needs to stop being such a people pleaser without sugarcoating it, whereas Sam wouldn’t really be able to do that as well). But if he works through his issues or at least has a secondary support system to help him, and they take it slow in a way that makes it more casual, basically doing what they are doing now, but with more romantic intention (a sexual relationship can come WAY later), then they would make a really cute couple.

Years back I started reading Let's Play and I really liked it, probably because I related to the main character what with struggling with anxiety and having my own passion for writing, a dream I was scared that I could never accomplish. I also liked how Marshall's character was written, but I fell off it when it started going into weird NSFW territory and the story just wasnt there anymore. In general, I feel like webtoon as a whole went down in quality when fast pass became a thing. I remember how waiting for weekly updates used to be what I had to look forward to before then, and I remember feeling like every featured webtoon had so much love and soul poured into them by their creators. Whenever I saw a discover webtoon become featured it felt deserved and like the creator's hard work on their comic was paying off. Now it just feels like only what the app thinks will be popular ends up on the featured page, and none of the unique and thoughtful comics get the recognition they deserve anymore.

Things started to get weird for me when sam had a whole romance arc with link and it took 50+ chapters of the story. I was so confused bc i thought she was supposed to end up with Marshall and they were dragging out every other relationship that budded 😭 plus she had no character development

I only read a little bit of the beginning and then immediately stopped reading (I do that a lot with comics and then come back and then binge read) but I ended up getting interested in other comics instead. The beginning episodes were super interesting and cute! It seemed like it was actually gonna build up and just be a cute slow-burn, including commentary about the toxic parts of the Let’s Play/Indie Dev community. It’s a shame to hear it went downhill.

Wait Fandom jumps on a game because their lets player stinks at it The lets player keeps dying and blames the game for his mistakes... Is that Arin Hanson of Game Grumps fame?

I've always thought of Webtoon as this final dumpster where most of the actual trashes are praised over. Not saying all of them are bad, but most of the popular ones are average at best and barely enjoyable at worst.

I used to enjoy reading let’s play but it just became frustrating to read as well as (spoilers) One of the love interests and Sam got together but he was quite toxic and controlling. They also romanticized that which was when I decided I didn’t have the mental capacity to read it.

I'm sorry but as much as I was willing to hear your view on Let's play, only reading 10 chapters and forming an opinion based on that is ridiculous and very misinforming. I understand that you have limitations but that doesn't make a sound argument. I ain't saying that the story isnt ass but come on 10 chapters? Do you even know what characters improve themselves? Do you know who gets with who? Do you know who breaks up? Character development, etc, etc? No you don't if you read just 10 chapters. That's like someone only knowing you for 3 weeks a then saying they dont want to be your friend cus you did some things wrong. You can't make a informed analysis based off of 10 chapters out of the 100+. Wtf? Imagine if people stopped reading Harry Potter at the first 10 chapters and said it was ass based off that.

I understand what a lot of people are saying about how the story's focus changed along the way. Regardless Let's Play is still one of the very few Webtoons I keep up to date with. Perfect? No. But it's something I enjoy from time to time and I got invested enough in the story for long enough that I want to finish it

Link is my favorite, he's just a boy scout that who really carried the household he lived, became the man of the house to take care of his mother and brother when his dad passed from lung cancer. he has medical training while serving coffee as a side job. he did like sam who was there for him to help his grief. developed a crush that he was to good for. after chasing for sam he just wanted to be friends after knowing he feels like their family, which tbh is a great way to end a crush and not harm the friendship. when him and angela started to kick off after she had some PTSD about her attacker when link had her on a hold, link wasn't aware of it nor didn't have an arc where he's avoiding her, instead he came to her when she's avoiding him. told her why she acted like that after sam told her, he did find a new interest of strong women after being pinned. he was worried about her, after a game of basketball she finally confess her feelings for him. he's not the smartest guy but link just feels a normal guy with experience who is interesting compared to Charles and Marshall.

I read this only when it first came out, or when it was on the canvas or whatever it was called. I noticed a lot of comics I really liked, as soon as they got picked up for the weekly spot changed. I think it is webtoons fault though. The comics used to be stories that would end, now everything feels like it has to go on forever. So many original ones on the site are amazing and I don't feel like that about many anymore. I don't want filer content I want a self contained good story.
@vixmulligan29842 жыл бұрын
From what everyone else is saying about how the comic turned later on in the story, im so glad I stopped reading (I fizzled out of reading webtoons that aren't horror) and the last episode I read was the one with the "Pumpkin alert" or something where the dad runs after her to find her. (and that was when the webtoon was just starting, and that had been the newest episode put out)

Just like Lore Olympus, Let‘s Play is just a self-insert. Not that I have any issues with self-inserts, it‘s more of when the main character becomes a Mary Sue
