I just received my great grandpa’s leather jacket, and it’s in need of a deep conditioning to keep it’s miraculously crackless surface intact.

Nevermind, I just saw your video of No 3 water protection, and I think I have a better idea of how a really beat up but properly taken care of DCB looks like. Have to say, your bag is stunningly beautiful. I hope my future Large Round Satchel will develop in a similar way!

Hi Sotto2, You're welcome. Yes, every Saddleback product that is shipped out is treated with Leather Care Liniment No. 1. No. 1 will darken lighter color leathers. In Dave's video, he put a lot of No. 1 on his tobacco pouch. Once that pouch dried, it wasn't as dark as it was when wet but was darker. For older Saddleback leathers that are much more porous, No. 1 will darken dark coffee as well. Although with use, in a few weeks after application, the color normally lightens up again.

Hey Uridien, Yes, that is a by-product of using too much product. It's sometimes helpful to think of leather as similar to human skin. Imagine putting sunscreen on your skin. If you put too much on, your skin can only absorb so much and the rest is left on the surface. The same applies to leather conditioner. If you have some white, chalky residue left on the surface, it's just dried leather milk that the leather couldn't absorb. A damp terry cloth or microfiber cloth should clean it off.

Jonathan that is a very nice bag, I keep viewing this video because how nicely the bag has worn in over time... The color looks more chestnut than dark cofe brown... I am thinking of purchasing one from saddleback leather, but its hard judging what size and color would work best for me without seeing the bag in person...

Hey David, My bag has developed a nice patina mainly because it's really worn in and used. I've dragged that bag everywhere. You also can't identify any scratches because just before I applied No. 1 in the video, I gave the bag an application of Straight Cleaner No. 2 which cleaned up the bag nicely. Unfortunately, the best advice I can give you is to abuse your bag! The more you abuse it, the better it will look. And keep conditioning it regularly.

Hi we are looking to your products to help us clean and maintain some 20 + year old black leather furniture we've inherited. Figuring out which all products we would need for a deep clean and protect? Do we need 1, 2, and 3? Will 2 help with any scratches and texture or do we need the healing balm for that? Should leather furniture/upholstery be waterproofed(no. 3) or no? Thanks!

Hi Robin, Initially Leather Care Liniment No. 1's light almond smell might linger awhile after conditioning your leather item, but it should dissipate fairly quickly and not permanently overpower the smell of the leather.

Would you mind taking a photo of how your bag looks like when you haven't just cleaned it? I'm curious to see how my bag will develop if properly taken care of. I love DCB the most, but based on other people's videos and photos I've seen, it looks like chestnut ages more gracefully.... but I don't like the redness of it! Thanks also for the tips, I guess abusing it is what I'll do. Was wondering if there were other tricks, like twisting and bending it, or applying excessive oils or something.

It may darken the color very slightly. Initially, when the leather is wet with the conditioner, it will look quite a bit darker. Once it dries, it will return to the same tobacco brown color or just slightly darker. If you want to condition your tobacco brown and darken the color, you should try our Water Protectant No. 3. I personally really like the new dark tobacco color after applying No. 3.

There is nothing like the look of well-used, properly cared for, high-quality leather. This guy's gorgeous bag is a good example, albeit pretty "new." Twenty years from now, this bag will be hitting it's prime. It's a real old-money thing ,-- connoisseurs can clock quality old leather with a glance, and it has nothing to do with so-called luxury designers (Hermes makes saddles and bridles. And they aren't marked as such anywhere you can quickly see. But if you know good leather --and horses -- you can likely tell anyway). The patina of high-quality, cared-for vintage and antique leather is that incomparable.

Hi, I have a Waterfield Design veg tanned full grain leather Muzetto bag, I curious if this conditioner will work with my bag. I noticed the leather shown in most video featuring this condition usually have shiny surface (like most traditional leather bag that has been well buffed / polish), while my bag has a thin layer of fur (cow hide, as in sweeping in one direction will cause the fur to stand, and sweeping from another will flatten out the fur, sort of thin layer of fur)

Hey Jonathan, that's an awesome looking leather texture and color!! I have a bunch of stuff in Dark Coffee Brown including a thin briefcase. I also have this Camberlain Leather Milk (no 1). You have to tell me, how do you make the bag look that shiny and nice? I've seen so many photos online of how DCB ages and honestly it doesn't look very promising (e.g. dry and scratchy, almost going from warm brown to cold gray-brown). In comparison, your bag is shiny and has amazing color. What's the trick?

In other words, is there a faster-than-five-years-of-usage method of developing that beautiful patina your bag has? I figured I would ask the leather expert. ;) On your bag you can't even identify any scratches - I'm guessing that's because you have the entire surface scratched up, similar to how fine jewelry develops an even patina over time?

@@cjerico But was the oiling good? I also looked at Pad & Quill Leather Oil & Cleaner Kit (maybe you should check it out, it seems pretty legit and premium from the reviews I saw). Hey bud, just received a new back pack from Saddleback and bought some of your products. What's your professional opinion for a new bag? Should I apply some immediately, wait until it's banged up, etc? I bought 1,2, and 3 just on the sole suggestion from Saddleback.
@jonathanmunson25619 жыл бұрын
Definitely wait for it to get beaten up. New Saddleback Leather comes well conditioned. You don't need to condition again for at least a year. You can condition the leather before then for aesthetic purposes, but that's completely up to you.
