Enjoyed the little talk at the end. Ariah's paiting of the river really struck a chord with me, applicable for the last video too. Had a lovely time watching the video!

I loved the talk after the painting session. A kind of post game talk! So interesting listen to evaluating the things that caused you to struggle. Always enjoy when Ariah paints with you.

Guys, terrific paintings.. Amazing how different the same scene is handled. Ariah, I feel the sky anyway. And, I enjoyed the conversation at the end as well.

I love when you leave the first thin colour block in some places. It leaves this transparent, varied and spontaneous look in the overall painting. It’s all about those contrasts at every level.

Yes, I agree. Thick and thin, light and dark, busy and simple, saturated and desaturated. I try to keep all of those opposites (and more) in mind while painting.

Hi Michael, I've been watching your videos and trying to learn to paint with oils (Alkyds actually). I am following your process by first sketching the scene with a smaller brush, burnt sienna and mineral spirits. Then I indicate the darker shadow areas with your shadow mix, thinned with Liquin. (I think you mentioned that you add some mineral spirits to the Liquin, but I haven't tried that.) Then I add a thin wash of approximate colors while blocking in the major shapes. At this point the surface is still wet, and I then start adding more layers of thicker paint (also with Liquin in it). It looks good at first, but as it's drying, the highlight areas lose their saturation and become sort of "faded." I think maybe I'm using too much Liquin and the pigments start to migrate from the underlying layers into the top highlighted layers. If I waited for the underlying layers to dry, it wouldn't be a problem, but I want to paint alla prima. My thought is that adding some mineral spirits (in addition to the Liquin) to the underlying layers will help them to dry faster, and easier to paint over. Then when adding more layers, use little or no Liquin. Then the pigments won't be able to migrate as much with less Liquin. Can you comment? I'm a Patreon member and I tried to see if I could post my question on your Patreon page, but was unable to. Thanks for all your great videos, best wishes for continued success!

I usually only thin the paint in the beginning of the process. After the block in I apply thick paint. 😊

Good to see the two different versions of the same scene. Nice. Thanks The last minute of the video I noticed tour t- shirts. Ryan wore a dark blue shirt and painted darker blue water. While the other guy ( sorry didn’t get your name) wore a light blue t- shirt and painted light blue water. Hummmm…Does that have some meaning or something? 😧😬😮
