Hi, Tim. Thank you for your wonderfull tutorial. It realy helped to understand the workflow of game ready assets. In the past i would model a super high poly mesh with thousands of faces, caring too much about triangles and ngons. Now, with your help i can model low poly things with quality texture maps, that look amazing. The only thing i used Maya for this tutorial and it felt kinda harder then Max. Best regards.

That was a lovely tutorial -- clear and concise, with a sturdy workflow and amazing results. Well done! I'm in the process of learning painter myself, unfortunately I may have made the job harder for myself by using a creature instead of hard-surface. Still, I've picked up plenty of great tips here. Thanks!

Great tutorial as always! The scratches looks like someone put the dirty knife on a ground and purposely repeatedly stabbed it with another knife or some screwdiver causing these scratches, cant imagine another situation of them appearing on the mid side. Also the handle it's obviously plastic based on its geometry ( hopefully just for the sake of tutorial/look dev ).
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Exaco, glad you like it and yes for this tutorial I pretty much came up with my own concept for the kukri by kitbashing together a few existing ones. Concept art is not my specialty and you are right that the handle was originally for a plastic knife ;) Either way I like to exaggerate certain aspects such as the scratches. Often with all the post processing effects on top you otherwise have a hard time seeing it so good to give it a bit of an extra push to stand out.

Hi, I have been watching your tutorials for quite sometime, I have even gone back and watched them over and over as theyre just that helpful and you can pick up on stuff you missed again and again as you gain a better understanding of the programs. I just wanted to thank you for uploading such stuff for us. I wanted to ask a question substance related that would help so many people; Do you have a workflow for exporting textures created in substance for non-pbr games like fallout 4 and such that use .DDS format? Everytime I export them, the specular maps look weird, though they have full detail, there is a flat glossy sheen over the entire object in certain light which ruins it. I am thinking maybe its a gloss map or something, the specular maps exported are green in colour. I hope you can make a video on this subject, it would be extremely helpful to a lot of people.

When you made a mask for the screws(Purple) you did not have to redo it to remove those areas from the blue mask, what you could have done was copy the purple mask over to the blue mask, then set it to subtract. Same for the handle.

Great tutorials ChamferZone really enjoy them and there very easy to follow and understand. If i could ask your help I've followed the tutorial for the blade and have followed or so i thought the tutorial and done what you did. but when i bake my high poly into substance painter my normal, ID, Thickness and AO maps stay black and i cant see the high poly on top of the low. I've downloaded the fbx and obj that you provide and they work perfect so its not the program and definitely something i'm doing if you could please offer some advice or point me in the right direction that would be great. I've been stuck on this for the past couple and have retraced my steps a few time and cant see what i'm doing wrong. I'm using 3Ds max 2016 and i even tried unwrapping in 2017 and still it wont import correctly. Thanks in advance. Sean. P.S keep Making these vids you really are an excellent teacher
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean, sorry for the late reply, I was afk over the weekend :) First of all glad you like the tutorials and secondly... when the baked maps turn black then this means either that you... forgot to assign one single material to the lowpoly before exporting it out of 3DS Max.. or... you might have done something wrong with the naming convention. Make sure every name matches 1:1 the highpoly and have it as _high and _low. It's also case sensitive so even if you have it as Low it would already not work. Third thing to check is... make sure to give both your low and highpoly a reset x form and see if anything acts weird. In that case you see what to fix on it. One of these three should be the fix for you I would hope. Let me know !

hi! thank you very much for your video, it's really great to have this kind of high quality tutorial in youtube! I have a small question: I finished every thing but at the end I want to go back to 3ds max for animation. To do so I exported the texture in substance painter 2. then I tried to applied thoses textures in 3ds max but I've got some weird results. Is the displacement map in the wrong scale ? like it's a non scare uvw but my texture is scare. How should I do? thanks
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Pixelion, glad you like the channel and sorry for the late reply. So as far as applying the texture in Max goes... you should have NO problem if you follow this guideline as seen here at the bottom: forum.chamferzone.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&p=1384#p1384 3dsmax "might" show it as square even though its non square. But all that matters is what it looks like on your model.

Hello Alex, I would work with splines for that. Splines allow you to simulate any kind of wrapping look and can then be converted to poly. Essentially something like that here but with more adjustment to fit the handle kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHmseaWOYp6ChZY

Thank you, this was very helpful. Can you make your own masks in Substance? Like if I painted one in Photoshop?
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
NP Matt! Yes yes absolutely, you just take a brush and you start painting in on the mask (given that you are on the mask layer). That is how I always do it, first... everything that can just be 'grabbed' through polies, then if something needs some finer masking words the brushes come into play.
@Digital_Guerrero
@Digital_Guerrero 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome Thank you for the reply. What about creating the mask out side of Substance like baking it from Zbrush or Maya?
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
I am not a big fan of that, I used to do that.. bake color information into the diffuse map, then bring it in to Painter as color ID map. But first of all Painter by now has its own color ID baker setting and secondly.. I don't use this feature. Color ID maps always have the problem that they are based on pixels so on curvy UV segments you get that tiny little zig zagging steps which can look ugly. That is why I prefer to grab the mask information straight from the polygons and if required paint in a bit of extra information. This gives me the max control over my masks.

I have a very important question, is it fully safe to paint in 2k and then change to 4k resolution? Can i be sure that it will change ALL the textures/effects to 4k res and wont leave something in 2k?
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Combat Garlic, sorry I didn't get to reply earlier then that. Yes that is exactly the case. The only thing that you need to make sure is that you do bake out your textures in 4K. That means you have it always in the highest possible resolution available even if you look at it in 2K which is usually the best for performance reasons. It's a good practice to switch it to 4K every once in a while in the substance painter viewport so that you see what it looks like in the highest resolution. You can also just be in 2K and export it as 4K, it will work perfectly fine.

@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Natalie ! Thank you too for following the tutorial and glad you you like it :) Could you tell me which part of the tutorial you have this problem at? Is it in the extended edition or here in the free part? Are you using the "fill" thing with a procedural texture for that pattern? Because in that case you must go in that "fill" thing, click on the properties in there and change the tiling, instead of the main material. It's a bit confusing but that is what I think you are having as a problem.
@lizbathory1169
@lizbathory1169 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for take the time to respond, I've been following the free part of the tutorial and I think I may buy the rest, didn't find anything better than your tutorials and I'll recommend this to my colleges. I'm 3D character artist and recently I had to start using Substance and I dont know how I survived till now without it! Im texturing a character and for the space suit Im using the smart material I mentioned but is very frustrating I cant change the size of the pattern, the fabric pattern is huge :( and when I move slider of the UV Scale size, the material doesn't change!
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Natalie, that is awesome to hear, thank you for putting the word out there for my tutorials :-) So what you want to do in order to change the tiling is open up the folder of the smart material and then click on the mask and change the procedural tiling amount of the hexagon pattern. Since it's an effect that is applied as a separate layer you will only be able to change it there. Have a look at this: i.imgur.com/j0z7m3f.jpg I hope that fixes it for you!

Hello MegaMaka! That was a bit of an accident that happened there. So that smart material was one that I created myself a while ago and I forgot about that when I used it in the tutorial. I uploaded it to substance share yesterday and they say that after reviewing it, it will appear there. I guess they don't work over the weekend because it's not on there yet sadly. SO... in the meantime you can download it from here: drive.google.com/open?id=0B0rKo4v9Jhvgd3BubGExMUFqNWM make sure to put it in C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Substance Painter 2\shelf\smart-materials

Hi! I'm sorry but I have a question, when I try to bake it, normal map appears in black, I do not know why because I follow your previous tutorial and I have the same of you, if you could help me... Thank you so much!
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Blanca, that sounds like you missed something on the naming convention because that is the #1 case for when that happens. Make double sure that your lowpoly is called _low and the highpoly piece has the same name but with a _high suffix. Substance Painter is case sensitive so even if you have _High it will not bake correctly. If the problem still exists after that you can also message me your scene on facebook.com/chamferzone and I shall take a quick look. :- )

Your machine baking texture is very fast when compare to may work PC in my company, with 4k normal map it take around 5 minute and half hour for 4k AO, lolz. And did you use 3DO/Quixel Suit yet? I don't really know which is better between 3DO and Substance Painter. And in most of my case with texture from 2k and below, the texture is little blur after export. BTW, I usually use Quixel Suit to turn Normal map to Cavity map or mix both of them, in some generations, cavity map work better than curvature map.

I don't think his machine is that fast. Maybe he just cut out a long baking time.
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hello, yeah I should have probably mentioned that I fast forwarded through that ;) Didn't want to make you wait for 5 minutes. Takes around the same time for me. I tried using the curvature map from Quixel with Substance Painter once and I got really weird results out of it with some of the generators. I also prefer to bake everything within Painter so that I have it all coming from one source for the case I have to rebake. I try to avoid jumping back and forth with too many programs to avoid those extra steps.

@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hello TrustGone for basic 3Ds Max controls I'd recommend you to look up the official documentation. In general ALT + mousewheel does a lot of the movement in Max. I am not sure what you mean with reverse envgrave but it sounds like you could use the Boolean function for it. That will cut out shapes for you given that you have that detail geometry already modeled out. Usually I do engraving in Substance Painter though as Max would get too messy with it.

Any reason why I can bake all the maps fine, but when I try to bake the AO map it hangs? Doesn't do anything just shows a loading icon. I have to shutdown the program completely and restart it. Of course I've been following along so everything is similar to yours. Thanks for your time.
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Cody, yeah whatever they do with the AO and the thickness bake it's quite frustrating. The thing is... as long as it says loading it will finish ! The best thing is really to kick that bake off and leave the house for some lunch or dinner and when you get back it's done. Also make sure to have anti aliasing ticked to 4 and not 8. Otherwise it's insane the wait time. I fast forwarded that baking part in my video (I should have probably mentioned that)

At 20:10 you add a second steel material ontop of the original one and you get the details of both combined. I didn't catch how this happens. When I try this, the material ontop cancels out the one below it.
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, apologies about the late reply. That is tough to say why its not working. Make sure that the one on top does not have height enabled, maybe that is it? Basically its kinda pointless what I am doing there at that part (I only just notice it now). You could also just disregard that steel rough material and instead crank the gloss amount on the iron shiny, so that you only have one material for it.

There are other software packages and it can't really be said which one is the clear winner but for game related production I love Substance Painter. I use it both at work and for personal projects such as this tutorial so it's certainly something that is established in the industry and therefor worth learning.

ChamferZone Thanks for fast answer. Do you work as game developer or do you freelance and if you do work as game developer. Wor what company do you work if I may ask? Yeah I usually used Photoshop for texturing or well I usually start to do base texturing in blender and then move to Photoshop. What I like about substance painter (from what I've seen from your videos) is fact that you can do some high quality texturing as tools provided there seem to be similar to Photoshop.
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
I started at Crytek, then moved to Canada to work 5 years for Ubisoft and as of October last year for Digital Extremes. Substance Painter certainly replaced Photoshop for any texturing and for sure.. it's quite similar to Photoshop which makes it pretty easy to get into it.

Hello Richard, yes usually the best way to perform before baking is to reset x form all the geometry and have backface cull enabled (right click the object and make sure it's checked). That will show if you any parts need flipping or not.

Maybe someone reads this - who knows. Following the tutorial 1 by 1 but the resolution of the textures I apply are super blurry compared to seen in the video. I used 4K too, so I don't really know. I just know that that kinda changes how much of the details I actually see, as even the dirt layer is very blurry rather then good looking. Anyone here that knows why?

ChamferZone oh, so in Marmoset you don't have the same problem to match the textures of render whit Substance Painter preview? Thanks for your attetion :D
@ChamferZone

You would export the textured from Substance Painter over to Marmoset and then set up your scene there. This goes super fast and made for PBR textures, same as Substance Painter. So you get the perfect results in it.. it's easy and intuitive and I can only recommend you to take a look at this here if you want to find out more: www.marmoset.co/category/toolbag-tutorials/ :) Worth every cent Marmoset !

I am following the exact same process but when I am trying to add a smart mask as you do at 16:39. the mask is placed underneath the fill layer with a little circle icon and does not seem to affect the fill layer at all, the mask looks completely black. On yours we can clearly see the shape of your blade on the mask window but on mine it's pitch black. Any idea what might cause that? I do not have the ambiant occlusion map though but I do have the world normal, normal map, and curvature map. Thanks!!
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 8 жыл бұрын
Hello, could you post a screenshot of your current scene with that mask applied (not working) ? That would make it easier for me to see what's going on. I'd recommend baking all the maps though. Some of the generators needs them. Maybe that is part of the problem.

Hi, sorry for a 3 day long wait.. I get a lot of comments and sometimes I don't see it in times ;/ So to me the cause of the problem looks as if you didn't bake your curvature map properly. Hey mate, sorry for the late reply. It's just my personal choice. I think that obj is better for highpoly. I did encounter some bugs in my bake when I use FBX as highpoly, some little dark spots appear some times. When I use OBJ that does not happen.

Hello Sir, sorry for the late reply but the most likely thing that happened is that you have a naming convention mismatch. Make sure everyhing is either _low or _high. Even upper case letters can break it.

What exactly is the point of baking all those maps? I only baked the Normal map and got the same result
@ChamferZone
@ChamferZone 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Emiel, we need all the maps for the generators to do their work. For example without the curvature map you would not be able to get any proper edgewear around the little details we added like the screw holes and so on. Each map can have a certain effect if we apply generators. Leakage for example looks at the gradient map to know where up and down is.

NP, i hope it works for you because I had some people saying it didn't work on the substance share page. I wonder if maybe one of the new substance painter updates messed it up. Either way in the end it's really just a pretty basic effect with some generators to get some more highlighting around the edges. Something you could probably just tweak yourself with the generators they have in there (or smart masks)
@Arnov618
@Arnov618 8 жыл бұрын
I've been looking for something like this since whenever I tried to texture sharp stuff they would always look somehow off and I was rarely satisfied with result. I like how you used 3 different materials and edge wear to get the desired look of your sharp metal. really insightful video.

Just checked the material. It's not quite like in the video, every mask editor has no masks assigned. You might want to save whole "Blade" folder as smart material.
