i started collecting 4k this year since my friends got me back into collecting physical media and so far my favorite 4k's i picked up are Akira, The Goonies, Never Ending Story (German Copy), Dragon Heart, Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Willy Wonka And The Choclate Factory, Hackers, Mystery Men & Back To The Future Trilogy.

My 4K of the year has to be Umbrella’s release of Super Mario Bros. Incredible, exhaustive package with a pristine 4K transfer plus the new work print cut on blu. Other top contenders for me not on your list was Francis Ford Coppola’s Tbe Conversation, Umbrella’s release of Thesis, and Criterion’s releases of Happiness and Gummo

I just got my searchers 4k and boy i love it. Its one of my fave john wayne movies and warner archive needs to be commended. It is absolutely gorgeous

You are NOT over selling Canan Chronicles 4k box set from Arrow video. I knew when I got it at the beginning of the year that it was going to be a contender for the best 4k release/releases of the year. I to felt as though I was watching the movie for the first time. I grew up in the early 80s watching stuff like Conan, Beastmaster all those wild adventure movies and when I watched it for the first time in 4k, I was completely blown away 😳! Great picks for 2025! Thanks for keeping it real, and keep up the great work.

Right on Chase. Great stuff. Damn, I really need to watch my Congo VSU. I only received my Black Friday order from VS a few days ago (along with some other late arrivals), so I was trying to quickly watch as many last-minute 4Ks as possible before I finalized my year-end roundup video. I've heard a lot of people say Congo looks fantastic... wish I'd had time to watch it before my Top 4Ks video. But I plan to check it out this week. I also recently picked up the Body Double steelbook... love Da Palma's work on 4K.

But BODY DOUBLE absolutely blew me away! I have watched it 5 or 6 times since I got that steelbook! I am heavy into a DePalma deep dive right now... @@AVAPopCulture Oh right on re: the Da Palma kick you're on. I've been collecting his stuff and getting into his work quite a bit over the last couple years myself. Have you seen his film Sisters? That's good earlier one I'd recommend with Margot Kidder in it... pretty twisted, but definitely worth adding to the collection if you're a Da Palma fan. There's a Criterion blu-ray available out there. No 4K, but still worth picking up. It's a solid blu-ray transfer (as you'd expect from Criterion). Happy new year man!

Bringing Out the Dead was my favorite release of the year. I love Martin Scorsese's films and I always felt that Bringing Out the Dead was an underrated film.

agree 100% on Body Double it just gets better the more you watch it. LOVED the scene with Frankie goes to Hollywood. That's so damn 80s it's crazy. Up there with Boogie Nights John Holmes drug deal scene lmao. Body Double and Matinee would both be gorgeous posters to have up on the wall.

One of the Amazon reviews claimed the audio was out of sync toward the end. I know parts were overdubbed, but did you notice anything beyond old movie technology? I would like to pick up this title. I believe it is a Kino Lorber studio disc.

@@SealedOrPorted I didn't notice any audio out of sync and that is a major pet peeve for me. I was really happy with it overall. It is a Kino Lorber disc.

Oops sorry Chase for my paragraph about how good The Neverending Story is in the best July-Dec video then. I didn’t realize until the opening of this list that you bought it but just don’t have it yet. Haha! Sadly, because most of my money that you went to my set up and then my entire Christmas gift budget from my mom went to The Neverending Story, I haven’t seen any of these myself, but I can’t wait to be able to actually get fully back into collecting in 2025 since I won’t have to put my money toward bigger purchases! By the way, not to call your personal set up bad or anything like that I would never do that, but I was lucky enough with mine this year to get QDOLED and if you think regular OLED it’s good. You haven’t seen anything yet!

There's two that I thought A lot of people missed or just didn't see. I just watched bound in 4K last night and it is absolutely fantastic and the audio is just on another level. I almost say that I like it as much as the matrix. And film and Louise looks fantastic

I completely agree with the Abyss 4k release, especially since it's the first time on physical media since way back in the beginning of the DVD era. Along with Terminator, it is the best-looking Cameron release this year. Titanic was good, too, but that was last year.

I hear you about Severin and their lackluster QC. I have Delicatessen & Antiviral 4Ks on preorder and they posted on their socials that there was a mis-pressing of one of the discs in each set and that they would have to fix that before shipping them out. The new tentative ship date is now 1/15. I ordered these things on Black Friday.

Great list! I haven't done mine yet. Still have a couple more to watch ti see if they make the list. Wish I have more Shout/Scream Factory. I rarely buy their new releases due to costs. I usually wait for sales. The only one I picked up new in 2024 was Silent Night, Deadly Night. I agree with not including digital films. They have an unfair advantage. I have a couple I will throw in honorable mention. Plus new movies that doesn't need any restoration work is unfair to include. Those new movies will look just as good on bluray.

I could not agree more with your number 1 pick. Conan started the year off at the top of the mountain and nothing was able to knock it off. 2025 looks like it’s going to start off strong as well with Seven, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds. Oled, there is no substitute. Enjoy it!

As audio goes... garbage in, garbage out. As I do a lot of audio work for podcaster (side job) I here it time and time again I can do some magic but there only so much you can do. So I do agree with you about audio.

exactly!!! I think people think there is some kind of magic that happens that can make anything perfect! if you have a crappy quality sound recording from a low quality device, there is only so much you can do to fix it!

Great video, Chase, and with having most all of the 4Ks you counted down, I agree with your ranking. 👍 The 4K of " Demolition Man" looked & sounded incredible, no controversy for me there. And I couldn't agree with you more that "Trick r Treat" was worthy of a big chunky box. On a side note, I sent you an email in regards to 88 Film's " From Beyond" . I hope you read it and can take a look at your 4K. The email explains why.

@AVAPopCulture Well, just to let you know what I'm watching it on... Samsung 8K 75" TV, DENON X3700H 8K AVR, Panasonic Ub820 4K player, HDMI 2.1 AUDIO-QUEST CHOCOLATE... And an 11.2 DOLBY ATMOS SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM... By the way, the big box set from ORBIT The 1996 TWISTER is on a BD 100, compared to the 4k you have is only on a BD 50, and the Ub820 HDR OPTIMISER basically takes most of the green out of the movie period... It also does the same by taking most of the blue out of Nightmare on Elm Street, making it look more natural... I can't wait to listen to your review of LEGENDS OF THE FALL, MY BROTHER... 😆 🤣 😂
