Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, on 4 February, addressed concerns about two recent incidents at Admiralty Secondary School: an alleged assault on 7 January 2025 and the 2023 suicide of a former student. He warned against adults engaging in social media-driven vigilantism, stating that emotionally charged public reactions can hinder schools’ efforts to guide and rehabilitate students. Hazel Poa, a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament, had questioned whether investigations were conducted into both cases and if any actions had been taken against those involved.
Mr Chan clarified that the January incident involved an altercation between two Secondary 1 students, with one hitting the other on the head with a plastic water bottle, causing an injury. He confirmed that the injured student received medical care, while the responsible student was suspended and will face disciplinary action.
Regarding the 2023 suicide, Mr Chan expressed condolences to the family and explained that MOE maintains strict confidentiality in such cases. He assured Parliament that the school had provided extensive support to the student and her family during her emotional challenges, refuting public allegations that school leaders had dismissed her concerns.
Mr Chan also noted that bullying cases in Singapore schools are rare, and the rate of repeat offences is very low. He urged parents and the public to allow schools and authorities to handle incidents professionally, without speculation or interference, to ensure that both disciplinary and restorative measures are effectively implemented.
