Dragonite Recently gained access to Superpower in Pokemon Go. This was originally intended to be a community day move as it was present in a vote held a few years back when Niantic asked trainers to vote on an option. Finally they decided they wanted Dragonite to have this move anyway which gives it exciting play in Master League and others against Steel Types which would usually wall it off. This does however make Dragonite extra vulnerable to fairy types, and with the single strongest rated pick in Master League Premier Classic being Florges, we need some versatile coverage if we're going to try this beast out.
Gengar has always been regarded as a glass cannon, with high attack and devastatingly strong charge moves there aren't many picks that can survive a Shadow Ball or Focus Blast. Plus thanks to its controversial Poison Typing it can resist Fairy Type damage making it a great cover for Dragonite. Usually Gengar is recommended to be run with Shadow Punch (its community day move) and Shadow Ball. Allowing Gengar to bait shields and threaten big damage easier. This moveset unfortunately means that when met with Normal or Dark Types that Gengar can do very little against them, and is easily walled off, making a bad lead situation impossible to win. Running Focus Blast instead of Shadow Punch allows Gengar to force either a shield advantage or switch advantage against some of its hardest counters, and in the Master League, a single shield advantage can be all you need. Plus it beats Metagross which is a strong plus too!
Another Ghost that fills this roll of beating fairies, Metagross and threatening huge damage is Chandelure. While Chandelure is due to get the new move Poltergeist on its community day shortly its unlikely to be much more useful than Shadow Ball that already one shots most Pokemon that don't resist it. It resists charm damage, and hits the steels for super effective damage with the spammable Incinerate, Flame Charge combo. Chandelure makes a devastating Sweeper when Gengar baits out the Ghosts hardest counter to either be one shotted or dealt with by Dragonite.
There are one or two core breakers that can give this team a hard time sure, but the same can be said for any team. Just pray for no Swamperts in the back (or at least that you bait them out!) and this team can take you far.
