But the reaction from the audience for London scene was very high so they just thought this might be a thing! That's David Crane and Marta Kauffman said in reunion

The writers said in interviews that the episode, The One Where Ross Finds Out, is where the writers first got the idea of pairing Chandler and Monica after seeing their chemistry together. But at the time, they were still in the process of getting Ross and Rachel together and they felt that doing two couples would be too much and detract from the Ross/Rachel storyline they were developing, so they decided to shelve the Monica/Chandler idea and see if they could come back to it at a later time. This is why they teased Monica and Chandler during the episodes, “The One at the Beach" and “The One with the Jellyfish," where Chandler keeps offering to be Monica's boyfriend. The idea is that they were setting up Monica and Chandler's tryst in London in advance, but it is also true that they were originally planning on it being just a one-night stand that they would decide was a mistake. But after the audience reaction they got, they decided to let it continue and see how far it would go. But it is true that the Friends writers did first get the idea to pair Monica and Chandler from their interactions in this episode, and they even admitted it in interviews. You can Google it.

So year, that part was pretty dark for me too. The drugs, originally from a car accident, and alcohol addiction made Matthew Perry balloon up in a few seasons. 3-5 I think? It's the seasons Perry doesn't remember at all. Then he got pancreatitis and lost 20 pounds. This is from Season 2 so he probably is decently fit in real life.
