Thank you for posting this, I had inspiration to search for two handed Chinese sword and I have never seen this weapon demonstrated before.

Nice video, Dan. It's great to see the two-person form applied to swordfighting. However, since I've started up HEMA, and had my fair share of accidents, I'd recommend you guys wear eye protection (safety glasses will do), and hand protection. Even with drills, as soon as you add speed, the threat of injury increases, even with swords that have handguards (and I see that the bokken don't).

+Raza Khan Indeed - I have a stock of them which we use in sparring. Probably a good idea for drills too.

Ahh, the glory days of my ponytail in full bloom. Great video! Is there not a style or form associated with these techniques?

+Xin Marshall The techniques come from at least 5 different styles and constitute my own rationalization of chang dao / miao dao basics and drills. Rather than present, say, Pigua or Tongbei solo forms (which I have studied) or the limited basics of each style, I resolved to distill one set of coherent basics and one set of two person drills - and place these on a formal solo platform for codification. In the case of the second form, I used the "4 roads" (Si Lu) platform to create a form. In the case of the first form, I added an extra half to an existing drill, using basics that are not featured in that school (as I've noted, every style has its own basics). As I get older my patience for "forms for forms sake" has decreased as has my time for "lineage". But then again, that is my prerogative, I think, given that I have studied and preserved at least 3 martial lineages intact (goju ryu, CPL and Inoue kobudo). In any event, you'll notice that my jo book does the same as the above - it takes the 20 aikijo basics, borrows concepts from classical kumijo (in both aikido and TSKSR) and CPL, then creates a series of 2-person "looping" drills featuring the essence of these.

Indeed - we have longer wooden Dan Dao but not everyone has one so it’s safer to use bokken in a class situation.
