Very nice! Yet another of LK Chen's swords I've been meaning to get. Absolutely gorgeous. I have my miao dao but this looks like it handles quite differently. Also, fighting a skilled spear guy is darn scary with anything shorter even a massive blade like this. Spears are just OP haha

I see similar techniques for German Zweihander. If you grip a zweihander on the blunt ricasso, you get a Spear-configuration and the movements are very similar to yours in the video. It is always cool to watch how "others" do it with their weapon-equivalent.

Interestingly enough, this sword is also blunted in the ricasso area, with some antique swords even having blade collars to grip. It was especially useful for drawing the sword. I completely forgot about that element!!!

My knowledge of chinese swords is limited. Is this different to a Zhanmadao?

In the Ming Dynasty, these were not called Zhanma Dao, but they are suitable for the same purpose. Later on int he Qing dynasty they had similar swords to this which were called Zhanma Dao.

Does this sword have the elasticity of chinese swords or is it stiff like the katanas?

some elasticity to it, but by no means close to something like a Miao Dao. It is a heafty blade and is built more like a katana.

@@xjxspartanxjx No, that depth is far beyond what I have on this channel. I focus more on teaching movements and techniques. I would recommend checking out @Matthew_Jensen he does stress testing for many swords and has quite a knowledge of sword steel. I would also recommend checking out @dlatrexswords for some excellent insight, especially his explanation of the sword dynamics charts.

It does, but it is a different construction which makes it about 5 times heavier than a Miao Dao 💪😅
