I really liked your video. You did a really good job at answering the questions I had. Again thank you . The Lord willing , I'm about to buy my own ford 8n, or 9n soon. Whatever we do in word or deed we can do to the glory of God in the name of the Lord Jesus if we repent and give our lives to him (Luke 13:3, 2Corinthians 7:10, Acts 17:30 Romans 10:8-10). Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is NOT the correct fluid to be using in a 9N, 2N or 8N tractor. Tractor hydraulic fluid is approximately a 17 weight oil. The Ford spec's call for the use of a 90 weight Mineral Oil which is heavier in consistency. Some dealers will tell you that the new and modern tractor hydraulic oil will work fine. You will regret your decision to use that tractor hydraulic fluid when that very expensive hydraulic pump goes out on you as it operated in the oil.

I worked in the lubricants industry for 20 years, representing Shell, Chevron and several others and can tell you for a fact that all tractor hydraulic lubricants fall directly between 17 and at most, a 20 weight depending on which additive packages are used by which blender.

@Craig Winkenwerder You are absolutely 100% correct in your statement that it does not matter who I have worked for and your statement is also correct that the N-series machines use the same lubricant for the differential, transmission and hydraulic system. Know one in their right mind will disagree with those statements, unless they don't know what an N-series tractor is. However, the knowledge that I gained working for those lubrication divisions before I retired still stand's. I have been inside the rear ends & transmissions of all the N-series Ford tractors. In fact, the newest Ford built tractor in my fleet is apart right now in the shop. I had to take it apart due to wear cause by the previous owner using a "tractor hydraulic fluid", which sadly, caused premature failure of the pump. Universal Tractor Fluid, 303, Hy-Trans, Hy-Guard or whatever anyone's favorite brand may be, all have an ISO "weight" rating of approximately 17. So yes, you are again correct with your statement that using to light of an oil will effect the operation of the hydraulic system, especially in the high heat of the sommer. Yes, any tractor transmission/hydraulic fluid will lubricate the transmission and differential gears and bearing very well, but is to light for the hydraulic system to fully work well and to be lubricated (in particular, the pump) properly.. My question is this then, if you know that, why are you using a lubricating/hydraulic fluid that IS to light? The SAE 90 gear oil, specified for those transmissions is closer to a 30 weight in it's ISO rating, PLUS, it does not contain an Extreme Pressure Additive Package. The E.P. additives in say an 80W-90 gear oil will over time, destroy the brass/bronze bits in the hydraulic pump that also uses the same transmission/differential oil, not only as a lubricant, but also as the hydraulic fluid as you well know. So don't use those either, with the two exceptions that I know of right off hand. One is Chevrons "DELO" series of 80W-90, which uses Borate as the extreme pressure additive and a similar product from Pennzoil. The Borate works like the E.P. additives, but is inert and won't harm the brass/bronze. There are several rules of thumb that I have learned over the years. One is that your never too old to learn how to do things the right or wrong way. Two, be open to what others suggest as many mean well and just might have a better way of reaching the same end goal. Third is what worked for your father and/or grandfather, may not work with todays changing industrial standards of manufacturing processes or new formulas. And last but not least, not every tractor and implement dealer that deals with the older Ford tractors have access to, knowledge of, or sell the 90wt gear oil. Most parts/service counter folks are not "old enough" to even aware that there was something different used for the older machines as all their training has been with newer units. They are all to quick to say that their XYZ brand of Tractor Hydraulic oil is the best and will work in everything, when quite clearly, it does not. But that's what has been drilled into them when they go "to school" to learn about this stuff.

Throwing some diesel in it before the new oil would have been a good idea. If you do not get the rubber grommet that goes around the shiftier this will happen again soon.
