Common misconception about VBS: Memory Integrity (aka HVCI) is a SUB-feature of VBS. Disabling it does not disable VBS, it only disables memory integrity itself. Disabling VBS altogether requires some registry diving. That being said, VBS is a GOOD security feature and I personally highly discourage disabling it. Yea but if you do nothing but play games on steam, it's doubtful you'd get some malware. I haven't even seen maleware in years, i can't remember last time i seen any on any of our PC's. no one downloads attachments in emails anymore, and no one in my house is going on fishy websites and clicking on installer popups or something. If your primary a gamer who watches netflix/youtube/twitch and game. i can't see how you'd ever get a virus. And slowing down your PC to catch something that doesn't exist makes no sense. I remember reading game manuals that game with games you'd buy from best buy back in the day before steam existed and all game manuals actually suggest turning off anti-virus programs as it can hinder game performance and i was like why do i even need while i'm playing a game anyway, i'm not downloading annoying during that game. But today it's far less likely then ever before to download accidently a virus, if you only go to official sources when you need an update like nvidia to update your drivers, what the heck are you going to get a virus from? No one downloads games or movies,, or music anymore like the old days as well,, everything is online, streamable, or on steam. I've honestly discouraged everyone i know from running any form of real time anti-virus programs and it's never been an issue because they aren't worth the preformance loss. Unless you use your PC for work and have sentive information on it, anti-virus protection is largely not worth it and jus a gimmik these days or for the truly stupid out there.

At present there is absolutely no benefit to 11 unless you have an Alderlake CPU. With the hundreds of millions of PCs that cannot run Windows 11 (thanks to the excessive system requirements and the unnecessary demand for Secure Boot and TPM), but can run 10, MS will also very likely be forced to make a more lenient version if they truly want people to run 11, and possibly one that goes back to working like a proper Windows, just like they did with 8. Otherwise the majority of all those left behind PCs will be stuck with 10. We already have millions of PCs that can't even run 10, because all the bloat makes the OS too heavy

How about how to roll back to Windows 10 if you were forced to buy a computer with Windows 11 preinstalled? That's probably longer than a Techquickie video but it would be super useful to know if it's possible. Just like we did with XP instead of Vista and Win7 instead of Win8. When Win11 is fully cooked a few years from now (if it ever is), then sure, it'll be fine to stick with. The almost universal consensus right now seems to be to stick with Win10 until that happens or until support for Win10 is pulled 5 years from now. However, if you don't have that option--say, your laptop dies or, worse, the laptop of your friend or relative who you do free IT support for dies, and you're forced into Win11--it would be nice to be able to roll back to stable, familiar Win10. Even if there's no free roll back option and it's necessary to buy a Win10 key (though they might be free like they've been for Win7 to Win10 upgrades, who knows?), there are probably still settings and tweaks necessary to keep Windows from trying to force Win11 back on you that would need to be addressed. It's a completely valid topic and highly useful to know about. And probably good for channel views as well. Especially with Win11 having fundamental problems with Ryzen processors and other crap right now, it definitely feels prudent to wait it out. It could save a lot of people a lot of headaches.

Relying on Windows search feature in the Start Menu is just a bad, bad, bad idea. Windows search is worse than useless when it only recommends Bing Web Searches over applications I know are installed on my PC.
@Hickeroar2 жыл бұрын
I've been using windows-button searching for years, and I've never once had it recommend a bing search over an application I have installed. I call foul on this claim. In fact, trying right now in windows 11 on a fresh install, the only way I can even get bing results is if I type out a partial sentence that doesn't match anything on my PC...

Search seems fine for me. Besides, anything I actually need to use frequently gets pinned or put on the desktop. I basically stopped using the start menu completely after windows 10 was released.
@thesteelrodent17962 жыл бұрын
not sure if 11 prefers bing over local, but you should still be able to neuter its reliance on bing and cortana by editing the registry (unfortunately you can't remove cortana completely without crippling the search function into uselessness)

You can also disable the entire vbs option by turning off virtualization features of your cpu. It will say the feature is not supported. For AMD that's AMD-V, in gigabyte bios it's called SVM. If you're not using a VM of any kind (android included) it is not neccesary to have enabled. It wont stop you from using VM software but you'll lose a lot of performance.

Strange they broke what was perfect. Win10 was perfect. I always used Windows Classic theme.. but in Win10 I didn't dislike it. I just did some of the tweaks to disable all the things. But here u have to do even more tweaking and it sucks. There's no reason to upgrade to Win11 for me. Win11 should enable some new hardware things, or so you can play new games.., but I have an AMD Athlon 3000G that its like an i3-4150 & GeForce 8800 ultra. The next APU I'll buy is in the next 10 years and thats still gonna be just good enough to play videogames up to the year 2018. So no rush for me. Win10 is perfect as it is.

A right-click menu is not supposed to be glossy and aero and shadowy. If I cannot instantly read the plain text of options on the menu, the right click feature has failed. The whole point of an instant context menu is to save me time, not to make me feel more aero while I squint and wonder why the option that I need was removed.

Upgraded to Windows 11, disliked the (again) complex menu, the easy access to the calendar events was gone, the weather was gone, the (I use this multiple times a day) battery performance settings were buried in a menu, the quick access to change keyboard layouts was gone, and after all this so was I. All good tips -- it's stuff I immediately searched out on my own and took care of. This is the worst implementation of the Start menu ever. The pinned shortcuts have no way of being organized (unlike Win10's tiles). I have recents & recommendations turned off, and now half of the Start menu is an empty area that I can't even expand the pinned shortcuts to. Meanwhile, the Widgets panel is also a fail because it's barely configurable. I don't want an endless scroll of news items that can't be disabled. I want a clean Widgets panel that *only* has the items I put on it. That said, I actually am liking Win11. It's a worthy successor to Win10 so far.

@@catsjc That's just reordering them. I'm talking about *organizing* them. With Win10's tiles, you could place them anywhere on the tile part of the Start menu, group them in different geometries (columns, rows, even squares/rectangles), have space separating one group of programs from another, even put a title on some groupings. You could even make the tile section wider if you wanted more space for more tiles (not to mention it scrolled down if you overflowed the vertical space). You can't do any of that with the new Start menu. It's just a limited, linear list.

You should disable the search button on taskbar too since when you start typing on start menu it opens up search anyway. If you have multiple monitors and apps aren't remembering the right position, for example discord opening on the main monitor instead of the secondary one, go to display settings and uncheck and then check again remember window monitor positions. Only thing I hate about w11 is how I can't drag files to taskbar and open that in the app. Like dragging a video in after effects or premiere.

The last point about VBS is incorrect and ThioJoe has a comprehensive response about the said article, this being a techquickie video, I'd like for it to be addressed. Enabling VBS has two main disadvantages: 1, it doesn't allow you to use other virtual machines like android emulators for example. 2, it can drop gaming performance on average by up to 5%, in some rare cases more. Yet it is an added layer of security that for most users is beneficial.

You can enable a clock with seconds in the context menu, although it'll only update when you open the flyout or when a new minute strikes. Right-click the system clock → Adjust date and time → Additional Clocks → check "Show this Clock" → Apply. Then, switch tabs to Date & Time → Change date and time... → Change calendar settings → Additional settings → switch to Time tab → change "Short time:" to "hh:mm:ss tt" (or "HH:mm:ss" if you're using 24-hour time). If it doesn't show up in the calendar flyout immediately, you may need to restart your computer.

Virtualization-based security is great on paper, however, even when you disregard the performance penalty, Microsoft's Hyper-V Manager is only geared towards enterprise users and not casual users and doesn't include many features aimed for consumers. Adding to this, Microsoft's virtualization platform doesn't expose Nested Virtualization extensions to third-party hypervisors that have such conveniences. By the way, don't expect any changes to Hyper-V for improvements as Microsoft is even starting to deprecate Hyper-V Server. Also, I would like to point out that the worst thing about Microsoft's virtualization platform is the virtualization management software. You had one job! *Head explodes*
