Hello my lovelies. I apologize for my absence but it was the cruelest of summers and I needed to take some time to care for myself. I promise I have some amazing BBRAE content lined up for you but if you permit, I'd like to divert from my regular content to use my small platform to speak on something very personal to me.
On June 24, 2022 at 9:21 A.M a notification came through my phone stating that my worst fears had been realized. The United States Supreme Court had overturned the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade (1973) that protected a woman's right to an abortion. I broke down. I cried. I was angry. As a cis-woman, this issue is deeply personal to me. No one should have medical and life-altering decisions made by their government.
The United States of America was founded on the principle of "freedom of choice." The first European immigrants settled in America for religious freedom. Under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, a person may choose whether or not to practice a religion or not to practice at all. This is the beauty of America, choice. A choice of education, of religion, to speak, and whom to vote for. The rights of abortion were threatened when former-President Donald Trump took office. His primitive, misogynistic and oppressive views chose 3 of the 9 Supreme Court justices. With 1/3rd of the court holding these extremist views, the rights of women across the country were destroyed.
The overturning of Roe is not solely based on abortion- it is about women being seen as fully human. When a woman cannot make medical decisions over her body, she is not seen as a full, capable and equal adult in the eyes of the law. This decision brands women as second-class citizens of the United States and is a gross attempt at putting women "back in the kitchen," out of the workforce and keep them from holding positions of power where decisions are made. This is a direct assault by the patriarchal society that is the United States to take away women's fundamental human rights.
A 16-year-old girl cannot adopt a child in the United States but she can be forced to bear a child and become a mother. The government "doesn't trust a woman to make a decision about her body" but somehow they think they can care for another human being? - It's completely backwards and wrong. A woman knows what is best for herself and her situation and no one but her should make that decision for her. Women are complete human beings, not potential mothers; motherhood is just an option. We are so much more than one thing we can do.
Any personal objections one may have to the institution of abortion does not give them the right to deny bodily autonomy to others. In reality, pro-lifers don't actually care about life, if they did, they wouldn't ignore the hundreds of thousands of children in the foster system; they wouldn't fight against universal access healthcare for all individuals; they wouldn't create a society that is unsupportive of women having children- they would have universal paid maternity leave, they wouldn't deny women promotions or high ranking positions because she might have a child; they wouldn't drive up the cost of life-saving prescriptions; they wouldn't take away government welfare and assistance programs that help those who are economically disadvantaged; and they wouldn't allow a judicial system to protect to those who commit horrendous sexual offenses. Pro-life is more like pro-birth; they just want to force women to have children so they aren't able to work or hold powerful positions in society.
Pro life is a lie and they truly don't care if women die. In reality, when abortion is illegal it doesn't stop happening, it just becomes dangerous and not standardized. Women will still seek abortions but they will be unsanitary, unsafe and ultimately cost women their lives. So many women screamed and fought for my rights a long time ago; unfortunately fifty years later I'm having to fight for what my ancestors fought for- basic human rights. It's disgusting and exhausting but I cannot in good conscience sit around and hope things will get better- I have to do something about it.
This video, "Change" by Taylor Swift is a call to action by anyone living in the United States of America who is able to vote or able to encourage someone who can vote. Though we the people of the United States cannot directly change the decision of the Supreme Court, we can elect people in the House of Representatives and the Senate who can codify abortion rights so all women across the United States will have access to reproductive healthcare. We must elect Democrats who will fight for women's right to choose and codify Roe.
It's frustrating that we must keep fighting to be seen as equal human beings. In November, vote to protect all people.
VOTE because your life does depend on it.
Please, pass this on to someone who needs who needs to see it
I love you all
