The first three bytes of the MAC address is basically a manufacturer prefix. It is often referred to as an OUI, an Organizationally Unique Identifier. So one or more of those codes is assigned to a manufacturer, and the remaining half of the MAC address is supposed to be only used once by the manufacturer, so every network interface made was supposed to be unique. Network monitoring and diagnostic tools can use this feature to report the manufacturer name, such as Cisco or Netgear. Changing the MAC address can break things at the ethernet level if you use the wrong values.

If you change the MAC address presented to the network, there are two scenarios: 1) If the modified MAC is still unique on that portion of the network, no problem should occur. 2) If the modified MAC duplicates that of another node on that portion of the network, it may cause a problem if it becomes difficult to avoid sending data packets to the wrong node. Think of it as identity theft for network controllers. Having more than one device at the same MAC address means packets get delivered in an unreliable manner. A few things to take into account. Originally Ethernet / IEEE 802.3 networks were a bus configuration, with multiple nodes tapped onto a shared coaxial cable. Every node could "see" all the others at all times, so MAC addresses were needed at the physical layer. (Look up details about the Address Resolution Protocol, ARP, as well.) As Ethernet evolved, the limitations of that bus topology became apparent, and over time it transitioned to more of a star topology, where network hubs and switches connected to other nodes via individual cables. This still requires MAC addresses, but provides some isolation if the duplicate MACs are multiple hops away. Another factor involves better Ethernet controllers. Originally all protocols on a controller shared the same MAC address, with higher levels in the protocol "stacks" using a two-byte "protocol type" field to differentiate between IP, DECnet, Apple EtherTalk, Novell IPX/SPX, Xerox XNS, etc. These shared the network like different languages in a crowded room: English, Spanish, French, German, etc.; the controllers just route each protocol to its appropriate driver. But some protocols required a bit more. DECnet was created by Digital Equipment Corporation ("DEC" or "digital") worked with Intel and Xerox to standardize Ethernet early on. They'd had a network standard that communicated over serial data circuits, and expanded it to include Ethernet. Part of that was to include addressing in the MAC address on each host. The MAC format of 08-00-2b-xx-xx-xx was changed by the network driver to be in the format AA-00-04-00-wx-yz. The wx-yz portion represents the host's DECnet address, in a decimal Area.Node format. The Area value is in the range 0-63 (six bits) and Node is 0-1023 (ten bits). Those sixteen bits are byte-swapped and used as the wx-yz in the DECnet-formatted MAC address. (My apologies if this is overkill in the information department! I was fortunate to have worked at a major corporation during the time when Ethernet was first being implemented, and got a lot of hands-on work with DEC systems and making them work with many other platforms.) You right click the windows icon on the bottom left of the desktop, click device manager, network adapters, then right click your network device, properties, advanced, then scroll to network address and type in any random 12 numbers. As for it not appearing there, I have no idea why. I have the same issue and I can’t figure it out.

well, I got to the mac address, not the way he said to. I did it the easy way. I went to Network and Sharing and then properties of my LAN. But I never knew that I could change my MAC address. It took me a whole second to figure out that he was not telling us the right way.
