The only thing I would change is the TV view experience, I want to have the possibility to watch the games from a court level view I don't think I am the only one. The user experience should be more personalised because is almost 2025 and we have all the technology in the world to make the viewing experience much better, better replay, better graphics, better statistic and data. As far as the game itself I'd leave it like it is because is perfect.

No wonder you are one of my favorites! I’ve been saying this ever since the WTA started implementing coaching for the female athletes. I felt like it was almost disrespectful to the women, as to say they can’t think for themselves so they need to implement on court coaching to save the game. We’ve seen superstars like Serena, venus, sharapova and others have tremendous comebacks and their competitive spirit set them apart from the rest. I always thought that the definition of a champion was someone who is able to finals a way to win even when they are playing badly…now everything just feels watered down, and we don’t really have the distinction/separation of good players vs champions. I think this is a huge part in why we don’t have many superstars as well. The individuality of this sport is a huge part in what makes it so special and that has been slowly being torn apart.

@@machinarum Tennis needs to learn from the mistakes of the NBA. Don't throw out the traditions, don't throw out all the old rules and completely change the sport that actually got basketball (or tennis) to this point. Last time I checked, tennis has been booming in popularity from a decade ago. While the NBA and former players this past week is admitting that they have a problem. The NBA lost their base, they ran off their fan base, which is the true basketball fan, the people that truly loved the game. Tennis needs to make sure they don't make the same mistakes. Don't go screwing up with the way the game is called, scored and don't mess with the tradition of the game that we love. Really it's the athletes, and the stars that excite new fans to watch. We can all think of our favorite players and even villains that have gotten us excited to watch tennis. And as we grow to love the sport we appreciate the skill we are seeing on the court. Tennis shouldn't cheapen itself like the NBA. They've turned their games into an expensive concert/light show/video game without any rules. And we don't want to spend our time and money to watch that

In Poland, the vast majority of supplements are on prescription so, Iga and anybody needs a prescription to by them. That is consistent with much higher manufacturing practices as the manufacturing processes are controlled by regulations. However, I think, you can buy vitamin C without prescription. Regarding the contamination amount in Iga's sample, it is in the margin of error for the measurement and is about 20 times smaller than the contamination in J. Sinner's sample. Iga gave physical proves by the lab tested pill samples, that was also confirmed by the manufacturer. Iga even gave samples of her hair for test to two labs, that can find doping contamination within several years. Both tests came out negative proving Iga has not doped. Iga is not a doper as some want her to be treated that way. Any hater and accuser should prove his/her innocence, for example, by giving hair samples before saying anything. And that is the question that should be asked any hater, and hypocrites who demand to penalize Iga.

Yet it would be unthinkable to get coaching during a chess game. While chess is a bit more predictable than tennis, I believe at the highest level, it also becomes intuitive, so any outside input would have the potential to disrupt the players' mental process. I am not even sure it would help. There won't be a "simple" move that a chess grandmaster will have overlooked.

I got the best changes to tennis rules right here fellas ;). 1) start of sets are always less exciting, especially in close games, where each is holding serve all the time, so lower the set games from 6 to 5 to get to the business end faster, maybe even to 4game in a set like fast 4s . 2) with new technology, let it help speed the game up, time between points is controlled via automated shot clock. ball has to be served, not tossed by a set time, if it's isn't, then another 10 sec for second serve, still not up then loss of point and next point clock starts. So basically pace is 100% controlled by Hawkeye. Umpire can stop clock for injury etc. I think those 2 changes alone will hugely speed tennis up, while keeping the range of players we have today, and faster matches makes scheduling is easier.

As a laboratory owner, we understand the challenges when cutting-edge technology, HPLC - MS/MS, reveals trace contaminants at infinitesimal levels. This sensitivity at Parts Per Billion (PPB) presents complex ethical and regulatory dilemmas. The recent case involving Iga Swiatek highlights these complexities. The level of TMZ detected at .05 PPB along with evidence of contamination from a GMP manufacturer, suggests an unintentional exposure and not doping.

I grew up in south Florida and so your walk was really appreciated from my home in Massachusetts! You may have heard that baseball is considering yet more changes too, like allowing a "Golden At- Bat" where a team in.a critical situation gets to substitute their best player into the batting lineup. All for fan interest, just like changing tennis' scoring and the jersey names. Ugh. Anyway, another tennis change that was "allowed" to happen over several decades was the racket technology. There were pleas from people like Bud Collins to limit the pros to wooden rackets, so that the ball speeds remained low (baseball did limit bats to be made of wood). That restriction didn't happen, and it's probably best that the technology did improve, not for speed but for control. Otherwise we never would have had the grace of Federer and others. But I do think the rackets are also responsible for the rise in tennis injuries.

I am sorry to say but I think we have to be open to the fact that our fav players just might be trying to get/stay at the top at all costs. The excuses they are giving would have caused these "accidents" a longgg time ago.

Names on the back only make sense when you have a team with many players on a court/field. What's the purpose when you literally have their names on the scoreboard? And the scoring in tennis is one of the most unique and beautiful things about the sport. Every sport has a learning curve, look at American football, rugby or cricket. Once you understand it (which isn't very tough) it adds such a unique aspect to the sport. Re court speeds, I dont like the homogeneity all being the same pace. I liked how we had some fast and slower hard courts, each tourney had its flavour. Which is another unique aspect, not only does tennis play on multiple surfaces, it has different court paces. I do fully agree with on-court coaching. It took something away from the sport when it was adopted

I think reducing the racquet head size would really bring back variety that i miss in the game. This constant 20 shot rallies does get boring. I want a well balanced game with serve and volley aggressive baseline play counterpunching. They need to make tennis more accessible just on tv for tsn which has like 5 channels and when all of them have tennis on it's not 5 different matches it's the same match every single channel. They should really strive to make tennis be a sport for everybody like how pickleball has really taken off in a short time period. I hate to say it but pickleball really has done well.

Interesting thoughts about the supportive legal substances Nikola. I might see it in a different way - let me explain. As you also mentioned, these athletes are not normal people, they are the TOP of the TOP as you said. Hence their training intensity, endurance, pace...everything they do is basically pushing their bodies to the red line limits. And if you do so, you also have to give something back to the body right? You are not treating it normally, as most of us do, you are always at the limit and if there are things that can help you keep your body in "working shape" and are available - why not use it? And to your comment about falling asleep....the good sleep is an essence for normal functioning of the organism itself. When I´m sleeping bad, my day sucks big time...at work, at home, it´s just a mess. And imagining being jet laged and have to perform the other day and knowing you will get no sleep whatsoever...I would do anything to sleep good at this point. I´m not standing up for Iga or anyone else but if I knew that something can help me sleep/regenerate/focus better and it is legal, I would take it for sure (from a top athlete perspective of course). PS: enjoying your rants more and more...when I´m watching/listening to you, I think I could talk tennis for days with you 😀

Totally agree, sleep is extremely important to performance. Players at the top are under extreme stress, very prone to anxiety and even anxiety attack. Understand how best to unwind, refresh, relax are very important. I have had anxiety attacks and I could not sleep. I did not take any drugs/medication, because I don’t want to rely on them. I took time off, away from the situation, took the time to recover, I have not had any episodes anymore. I am a perfectionist 😅, self critical. I am not a professional tennis player but I tried to play tennis almost 6 days a week to push myself, that actually caused me to get backwards because of injuries. I think learning what to eat, how to relax, building tennis skills up gradually are the best ways forward for longevity and consistency in playing tennis. 😊

Nick, great commentary, thanks. I know most players respect BJK and her accomplishments but I do not agree with her suggestions, nor do I expect them to become a part of the game. And yes, players should not rely on coaching during the match, it suppresses the development of their inner intuition, as you noted. As a player who learned in the late 60’s I find the whole idea of coaches talking to players in between match points to be unnecessary and actually not helpful for the player on balance. It’s like the coach is a helicopter parent!
For me coaching at the professional level is cheating it’s like a chess player being coached while playing and if you can’t afford a coach at the professional level gives up and coming players too much to go against, I totally agree..

What changed is that everyone adopted the same power-based play style. Don’t get me wrong, I love power in the game, but wouldn’t it be nice if the game encouraged more of an all-court style where players have to be competent with a greater variety of skills. The serve-and-volley era was boring because big servers dominated and points were too short. Many of these server-and-volleyers had suspect ground strokes and couldn’t hold their own in a rally or hit winners from the baseline, which was ridiculous as groundstrokes are foundational to the game. Today we have the exact opposite problem, few players are genuinely comfortable or competent at net, half volleys, approach shots, and the chip and charge tactic are nearly gone, the one-handed backhand is almost extinct, massive topspin is the norm, with players hitting at maximum speed all of the time instead of changing it up, and the art of the well-placed and paced passing shot is gone. Instead of limiting racquet head sizes, a better way to go would be to standardize the ball, limit the string technology advances which are outpacing the innovation in frames, tune the surfaces to be more style-neutral, and change up the tournament calendar so that there are not such distinct surface seasons. Today the tour is structured where everything in Europe and before the French Open is contested on clay, and the clay surfaces are always heavy, slow, and high-bouncing. The grass court season is very short and only goes on until Wimbledon. And hard court tournaments constitute everything else. Mix it up more.

Stop the players boxes from looking like Formula One. I swear some of the team members have more sponsorships than the players they work for. I think some restrictions should be in place. It’s not a good look for the players nor the sport.

Your thoughts on best of 5 sets for women’s singles in the Grand Slams? Grand Slams need to be distinguished from all other tournaments.

Not to be disrespectful towards you or anyone who doesn’t speak spanish but this whole “Alcaraz relies too heavily on Ferrero’s coaching” narrative is so funny too me because the majority of people who say it don’t know an ounce of spanish. If they did they’d know that the majority of things Ferrero and Alcaraz’s team say to him during matches are mainly words of encouragement and things to keep him grounded or focused. Yes, he does coach him and at times it does seem like Carlos looks too much towards his box but the large majority of the time they’re just helping him push on instead of giving him tactical advice

Coaching in college tennis works pretty well. Coaches on the court by the bench feeding players what they need during the match, like you said, return position, target forehand, etc. Works well. As for doubles, let them play real tennis....AD scoring and full 3 sets.....Most rec players play doubles and we want to see it more....The whole speeding up the game excuse is BS. Very few 30 ball rallys in doubles but lots of long points in singles. If they would showcase more doubles matches on TennisChannel maybe the interest would also go up? Tennis doesn't have any BIG personalities at the top of the game. We need a Fognini, Benoit Paire, Kyrgois, etc challenging for titles in every event. We need players that people love to hate at the top. McEnroe, Conners, type personalities but they need to be at the top to challenge Sinner and Alcaraz. That would put more butts in the seats. Doping in tennis...maybe steroids for recovery from injuries or long matches? Sure don't need them to be 6'4" and 187lbs. EPO type doping could help with those 6 hour matches at AO??? I don't know much about PEDs except when caught, blame supplements, trainers, food, semen in one case(lady had sex with someone taking PED and that's why she failed the test), blame everyone and everything and you get off with maybe a short suspension and a fine.

Interesting point about college tennis. Coaching also works well in Davis Cup. Of course in a team competition you absolutely need a coach.

Hi Nick going to changes my wish has always been that there be a limit on the number of tosses a player can make on his/her serve. This is not an issue on the pro level but as a 3.5 player I am irritated by the server who can take an endless number of tosses until they get the one they like and the returner has to reset himself many times. Why not let 1 “ mulligan “per match and after that figure a serve out with the toss that you put up ! the returner should not be put in a uncomfortable position as he resets endlessly because the server doesn’t “ like “ his toss. Your feelings ? Thanks Nick

The tournament schedule is too jam packed. It’s no surprise that players will try anything as substitute for getting proper recovery time.

People are confusing stuff. Iga WAS punished, even if people may consider the punishment "soft", she was punished and unless she had accepted the suspension, she would be suspended until the report realised weeks ago where the investigation was concluded and she was acquitted. Sinner is the only case in history I remember the player wasn't punished at all, even Yastremeska's crazy case made her suspended provisionally for months because the provisional suspension avoids the player plays doped. Sinner's case is a milestone case. ITIA isn't an independent tribunal and shouldn't investigate players that are the face of industry, industry that ITIA is totally dependent on, it's a high risk of bias and Sinner isn't the one to blame as well.

The tiebreak should not be used to decide a Grand Slam Final! It should be played out to advantage! I do not think it fair that No1. who can afford the Worlds best coach should have the luxury of having on court coaching against a No 1100 qualifier at a Grand slam. Love your work!

People should be able to tell how the difficulty level of the match just by looking at the scores. In Tennis, unfortunately you can't. How can you tell how many points were played in a 6-0 and 6-0 match? If the losing player did not win a single point in the entire match, the number of points would be 24-0, 24-0. But if every game went to exactly one deuce, then points would be 24-18, 24-18. Now that score tells a completely different story. Other sports like basketball, table tennis, badminton counts the actual played points as scoring points. They do not count an "4 or more" played points as one scoring point (aka game point in tennis).

Agree on the on-court coaching. Alcarez is far too dependant on Ferrero during the match - not good to see. Its almost as if the coaches are looking for their 5 minutes of fame

I dont like jerseys or names but I would like some opposing colors. Maybe if youre lower rated you wear light tops? I personally dont like coaching but Im not going to penalize a coach for pantomiming eating or drinking or telling a player to do it again after an ace. This may suck for doubles specialists, but I wonder if they could keep a wildcard spot open and after the first round, if there are upsets in singles, the 2 highest players that lose are given that spot… this way if someone bombs in the first round, you can still see them play…

Let's keep our sport unique. Scoring system is specific for us, don't dumb it down for the new viewers. If you like something, then show some respect and learn its rules and scoring format. We don't want it to be like a football or basketball score

Yes you are right. Superstars must be from western countries for it to make impact. It has got nothingto do with the players. Its the marketing and sponsorship that ensures players become superstar.

I think it's funny that we always blame the balls for the current rash of injuries (especially wrist injuries). Crappy balls have existed and have been used forever. What's new is super stiff rackets combined with super stiff polyester strings. Both those things are more likely to contribute to wrist, and shoulder injuries than a felt covered pressurized ball.
