The problem is I was so into the books I finished the full series in a month so I can't tell which book is which.

Justice for Turn Coat. Incredible, contained and the ending. Insane.

Ghost Story is actually my favorite Dresden book so far. It shows the consequences, for the world and for Dresden's friends, of what happened in Changes. It builds on aspects of the world-building that had mostly been neglected up until that point. It placed Harry in a position where he wasn't the most knowledgeable person in his sphere. Most of all it was a welcome return to a less angsty, if still dark, tone. I know a lot of people don't like Ghost Story because they want a Dragonball Z-esque progression where he gets more powerful with each book until he's disintegrating planets or something, and he is instead placed in a position where he doesn't have access to his normal power set at all and has to cope, but that's one of the things I like about the book: it's all about character and worldbuilding. Also, there's no vampires. Man, did I ever get tired of vampires.

Ghost Story: It's a deliberate 'rest' after the insanity of Changes. I think a lot of the dislike comes from people who already had a 15 month rest waiting for Ghost Story written, and then another 15 months for Cold Days. It feels better when you can read straight through.

So when do we get the Dresden short stories tier list? Some of them are pretty crucial to understanding the characters around Dresden.

The only one I disagree with is Turn Coat. I think you're sleeping on it a bit. It's a book that shows Dresden getting rattled by what is essentially one of the scariest individual beings we have ever seen in the series, it sets up his relationship with the island, it develops the conflict within the White Council, while again giving us some snippets of Nemesis. And it solidly reforms our image of Morgan. Like, when I reread the previous books he was in, I have a hard time not just being sad. I understand why its not up in the ranks with Changes, but for me this is one of the best reads in the series, and aside from Small Favor and Dead Beat, there really aren't any I look forward to rereading as much.

I love turn coat personally. I think it has a lot to do with how intimidating Skinwalkers are. I think Turn Coat is the "last mystery send off" that you claim White Night is actually.

Also can I just say that the scene at the end of Small Favor with Harry in the hospital chapel was one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever read? I’ve reread this series multiple times written and audio format and that scene brings me to tears EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. So powerful.

I'm starting to rethink think Ghost Story and how it plays with the perspective of protagonist. We all think Harry is the best, cause he's our guy, the main guy. But Ghost Story reminds us that the story world doesn't revolve around him, that's just our perspective. The story still goes on, even when the main actor has left the stage.

Cold Days is easily S tier, though.

I think you're being unfair to Turn Coat here. There's actually a lot of depth to it that might not be obvious at first.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who liked Ghost Story, I was feeling a bit lonely. You did a great job of putting my feelings on it into words.

Ghost Story offers a badly needed change in perspective. After the monumental events in Changes, the characters (and the readers) need a chance to process. I'm guessing that Mirror, Mirror will do the same thing after Battle Ground.

You HAVE to read both short story anthologies. It adds so much depth. Especially after Changes.
