You mentioned that the shifting seemed "stiff". Looks like you have an Eaton-Fuller transmission so the shift lever should go into a control box that actuates the shifting. There's a drain plug on the bottom/side of the box - remove and drain. Fill/clean with some diesel and refill with some light motor oil. Use synthetic if you're headed for cold country.
@dennisspencer11134 жыл бұрын
@Christian Macri With cabovers, the stick doesn't work directly on the transmission. It goes to a control box that is mechanically linked to the transmission. The box contains oil and the rubber boot can allow water to get into box that creates a heavy brown goo. The box has a drain plug and it should be serviced every year or so.

Some suggestions based upon experience with old trucks; If you are planning on taking it on a public road, change every air line going to the brake chambers. The law will be pulling you over and checking for old cracked airlines. Second, replace ALL of the fuel lines - both supply and return. Old fuel lines will crack and draw air into the fuel and return lines will leak. Once you start driving the truck, all of the vibrations will cause you a lot of leaks in the fuel and air lines because they have gotten brittle over time. And last, the air diaphragm in the brake chambers are 20 years old - ie just ready to burst. Yes, you can rebuild them but use a lot of caution because there is a powerful spring inside the brake can. Rehabilitation of an old truck is more than making it pretty and changing fluids. Basically all plastic and rubber lines get brittle.
@redpillcommando4 жыл бұрын
OMG I forgot about that. Those brake springs can be a killer. I used to know a truck mechanic that had a big chuck of his skull dented in from an accident with a brake spring. It seems a bit of gravel got jammed in the lock so that it did not fully engage. He pulled the housing and the spring popped lose and almost killed him. * Edited because I can't spell worth a flip!
@loganfields42764 жыл бұрын
A trick i learned with that is to plumb air into the spring brake to release it when piggybacking. You can also cage it but to me its way faster to just put a plug on it and hook an air hose to it

He should probably replace the fuel filter again after the tanks are clean, but if he wanted to run it that day (and in this video) maybe it was worth "wasting" the filter.
@ricochetVendetta4 жыл бұрын
@lordbeavis69 No matter what he should change the oil and fuel filter not too many hours after starting to use it again with 20 years of rusting away. I would expect and keep looking for failures tbh. An engine sitting this long is going to have metal shavings more then usual and he will want to remove that asap

With large oil filters, always punch a hole in the bottom and drain oil first.... Lowers the chance of a mess a TON and usually makes it easier to get them off. I use to change oil and larger cummins trucks a lot
@towrecker4 жыл бұрын
food for thought , always lay a piece of plywood , cardboard etcetera over the frame behind the cab and attach with a bungee cord , and do a quick test drive , the reason is the grease from lubing the drive line will sling all over the back of the cab , if you do the cardboard , what it slings is in the first city block , so you catch it and keep it off the cab ...

Take a look at that oil filler tube. I have an 87 as well. Mine has a Cat but I think they used a standard filler neck for all IH. That should twist and pull out. As it pulls out, I believe it actually turns upward as well. It may eliminate the need for the funnel. I cant remember how it operates. It was designed so you can check and add oil through the access door without having to raise the cab.

I've seen that done before and it has its pros and cons, it does keep road dirt off but I think I'd be happier using fresh oil if I was gonna do that, after all engine oil isn't overly expensive
@Adhdroamer4 жыл бұрын
@Kien Tran oh definitely clean everything up first and undercoat it but the oil on top of that will help add another layer of protection. Yup he really does it and his truck is a lot better looking then most others you see on the road

@@AdhdroamerI have a 93 chrysler new yorker that's leaks tiny amounts of fluid from ever engine seal imaginable the rest of the car is in great shape, I like to joke and say the car saved its self, because the oil leaks all over the underbelly coating everything, the front suspension members are all still smooth black and shiny

They are all 855 cubic inch engines with cams and fuel systems that determine how much horsepower Lurch! They are not your lets fix the pump and build power engines as the spots on the cab say you just burt a liner out. Someone who has been in one can steer you through and then you can change the fuel button to a ten from a thirty five in it now, smaller the number, the bigger the horse and change the fuel spring or stretch it if your cheepo plus add some shimes to the the fuel rail.... all equals more horsepower. I would put jake brake boxes on it as never to much brake power. The slack adjuster (brake on r,r,) can be adjusted by hand and is actually prefered by us old guys

With low sulfur diesel now days. It’s best to prime the fuel filters with automatic transmission fluid. The oil lubricates the injection pump. It will start fine with atf
@gac9144 жыл бұрын
Just a tip..... take a hole punch and hammer, and punch a hole in the bottom of those oil filters BEFORE you break 'em loose, and drain 'em out. Saves a hell of a mess with that oil running down the sides! You can always just crack the filters loose to make sure they're going to come off, but one way or another you're gonna be changing them anyway!!

didn't see you grease the clutch pivots and throwout bearing. If you lay under the trans there is a clutch shaft with a grease zerk at each bushing where it pivots in the bellhousing. There will be a cover on the bottom of the bellhousing held in with either 5/16 or 3/8 bolts that allows you to look up at the clutch, and you will see a grase zerk at the bottom of the throwout bearing. You only need a few pumps in it to keep it lubed, don't make it gush out or you will sling grease into your clutch discs eventually.
