Hi Stu, just wanted to say that your videos have helped me a lot, with my latest project! Watching your videos gave me the confidence to buy a project boat and I have just finished servicing the outboard, adjusting throttle cables and relubricating them, adjusting fuel mixture and idle speed and plugging a hole in the hull. Now I'm considering taking it further and repainting it. Thank you for putting these videos out into the world, you are a champion!!

I'm mounting a Johnson 70 to replace a blown Yamaha 90 on an old Super Sport 16'. I had the controls for the 70 off my old bass boat and need longer cables for newer boat. I was preparing my wife for the expensive repair shop job. Even though I thought I'd seen most of your videos, this one just popped up while watching the news this am coffee break. Wow what luck. I can do this myself and you sir are a lifesaver for us out here. Thank you so much from Pensacola, Florida. Also I like your upgraded Camera. I wish you could have mentioned there are several different types and not all are interchangeable especially older models , after watching your video I thought I could just use my old cables but as I have learnt, there are several different types of cables , some have the removable tips like yours , others have specific adjustable wheels and lock barrels, with removable end but fine thin cable ends with grub screw locks , others have the correct end for the outbound but different end for the control with windows ends that are not removable with small holes , others have the same set up but with large holes , there’s a multitude of different styles , tips, sizes , definitely not a one size fits all as you clip suggests. I’ve learnt the hard way with about 12 different cables of which none are exactly right absolute pain in the ass ! Hopefully I can save someone else the hassle and make it known that you need to find you specific cable you can’t just use a generic one at least with older outboards

Mate, I don't know what I would have done without this video. About 8months ago I had to pull apart my throttle system to get at my choke cable which had perished beyond repair. I used your video to disassemble the cable. I got myself a new cable but haven't had an opportunity to fit it until today. There were several things that I couldn't remember like which way up the plastic connectors at the front end went. I found your video again and it was sorted within seconds. I reckon you should re do it, or at least repost this one, its saved me probably $2-300. I'm still going to get it checked by a marine mechanic, but the satisfaction of doing the repair myself was pretty cool. Cheers

Once home and off the lake the parts will be there and I can do this repair myself. heads up, the boat dealer wanted 138.00 an hour and quoted a min of 2.5 hours. And the parts where 112.00 per cable. The most important thing is save your old connectors. to make sure you have a good fit. Unless their bad.

@briansmock96844 жыл бұрын
First off, awesome explanation and video! I am trying to relate this video to how my shifting cable/linkage is configured on my Yamaha outboard. The linkage is not mounted on the side of the outboard like shown in this video, it has a brass linking nut that connects the shifting rod from the power head area to shifting rod in the gear box (this connection needs to be unthreaded each time I take off my lower unit). When moving the shifting lever from neutral to forward/reverse the linkage movement “agrees” with the 3 positions. However when I do my in water test as you mentioned, my reverse sort of grinds/stays in neutral and I have to push back a little harder on shifting lever to actually engage reverse. I was nervous that my dog clutch was worn out, however when I detach the lower unit and move the shifting rod manually the prop spins freely in both directions when in neutral, I hear it ratchet into place and locks when in forward and reverse. So it seems like my lower unit/dog clutch are ok? Could it be that I am not getting enough “throw” with my shifting cable to get it fully engaged in reverse? Do you know if this sort of set up has an adjustment that can me made under the cowling (where the shifting cam/lobes are located)?

The newer ones are reversible, yes, but I'm not sure if that has always been the case. I've never done the swap (or even worked on a boat with port side controls) so I don't have a video on that yet. The have always been available in both configurations for twin outboard setups though so parts for the swap should be easy to get.

great videos, all of them.. i have a question i have a 50's evinrude motor, which has the throttle adjustment switch on the motor itself. is there a way to convert that throttle to a shifter by the wheel at the front of the boat?
@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
+ryansh84 Hi mate. Yes, is the short answer. :) I'm not an Evinrude expert, but every outboard I've seen has a short cable from the throttle on the tiller to the carburettors that can be disconnected and replaced with a longer control cable that goes to a control box at the front of the boat.
@billandalona8 жыл бұрын
What if your initially setting up the cables for the first time. my pontoon boat has a Mercury with a tiller and I want to change it to having a throttle set up like you just did.should I run the cables under the pontoon boat around it through it How would you suggest?
@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
There are three main considerations when picking a route for the cables. The first is making sure you don't make any tight turns (the manufacturer will specify a minimum radius, the second is keeping them as dry as possible to avoid corrosion and the third is protecting them from physical damage such a chaffing and be knocked by heavy objects etc.
@ap4802Ай бұрын
Quick question, throttle cable advances acceleration lever at engine, but does not retract back to neutral. I replaced the cables 3 years ago, (under 200 hours). I’m guessing the cable has come dislodged at the control box. Do you think the cable is bad already?
@jonkarle86707 жыл бұрын
What can you do with a stiff cable, i have a 2003 90 hp mercury with this problem, can I shoot oil through to clean and lube it? If so what oil would be good to use?
@jonkarle86707 жыл бұрын
I forgot to add earlier that I had the controls off of the console and it seemed rough in the console, i think I might need to troubleshoot the system independently by disconnecting the cables from the engine first and see where the rough spots are first. But if it is the cable, short of replacing them, can they be cleaned and lubed? There are no kinks or sharp bends in the line.

On the back of the outboard or the forward controls? If it is the forward controls it will be the fast idle. It increases the revs of the motor while leaving it in neutral so you can warm it up.

One of the biggest funding limitations for DIY KZbin channels is that (by definition) your average DIYer is usually a little tight on cash. HashTag MeToo on that bro but since this is about the 150th time Danger Stu has saved me $100's I'm going to head over to the links above and make a very very small donation. Obviously hurts just thinking about it but bugger it - I'll always spend a penny if it saves a pound.

Red cable wit threded end is one side i need on motor part were hook up but i need other end go on outdrive with little lead ball at end of wire

Hi mate, like watching your vids tho i have a problem, i have a 1977 Evinrude motor and its hard to put into forwed gear, it will not select drive on the forwed controls but wen i do it from the shift lever on the motor it goes into gear but only just as it pops out of gear now and then. it dont make any noise when it pops out so i kno the gears are all good only makes the motor rev out because it pops back to neutral. the thing is that im seeing that the shift lever is to fare forwed on the spine and the shift lever is hiting the motor casing not allowing it to go into drive all the way. now im thinking of removing the shift lever and bringing it back a thew notches to allow more room but how the hell do i remove the shift lever? iv removed the screw from the lever but the lever will no budge
@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
I've never worked on any old Evinrudes so I'm not sure about removing the shift lever. I'm not sure I'd be taking that approach though unless you are sure the lever has slipped. If not you will be changing something out of spec to compensate for something else that is out of spec. Does the shift linking down to the gearbox lift up and down or rotate on that model?
@myblessings23508 жыл бұрын
Yea the shift lever had sliped and was a problem taking it of due to seized bolds and screws. Snaped some of the bolts trying to undo em and broke a part of the adj lever & shaft assy in the process.. but puting some vice grips to change the gears and runing the motor the gears work fine. Dose not jump out at all no more. So now its another problem i need to fix is replacing the shaft assy.

@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
Sounds more like it might be a problem with the forward control unit to me. When it gets stuck, it you remove the cable from the outboard end can you manually push it into gear? Also, while they are separated try move the controls. By testing them separated like this it will tell you which piece of the puzzle is causing the problem.
