Thank you Susan, great content. Helps me a lot to setup the 350. Best regards from Germany to UK

Like buying a 3 million dollar super car and parking it in a showroom, never to be driven. If you have the best of something and never use it as intended, what good is it other than an investment?

Brillant video. I have a question: Lets say the a string of a steel string guitar fits perfectly regarding the tone height of the 12th Fret and the open string. But on nearly every fret except the 12th fret the string is sharp. How would you compensate for that? By lengthening the scale of the string via the bridge saddle? Or is there nothing one could do in that case without altering the middle of the scale, the 12. th fret?

The other thing is intonation is tested here on the guitar as it sits on it's back but intonation shifts when the guitar is held in play positions and so must be finally adjusted, tested in play position. The plastic is less conductive so when the strings are released the temperature of the molecules is changed and the time to stablise is long as opposed to steel strings that are conductive
@das2502505 күн бұрын
I notice you did not mention new strings in this early analysis , if the string has gone non homogenous in stretch the intonation will be out so you really have to use new strings and high quality string before doing the measurement

I just stumbled (thank you KZbin algorithm) on this channel. I'm not a repair person, but as a player (hopefully not horrible), I'm always interested in learning how my guitar works. I loved that Susan wasn't afraid to try different approaches on the fly... and wasn't above showing her "mis-directions". That is the sign of a real craftsperson. I don't "like and subscribe" channels often, but this one immediately got that treatment. Thank you, Susan, for what you do!

The Ashmolean collection is inarguably superb, but contention about the Messiah Strad’s authenticity has never been resolved. Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, both a preeminent luthier and businessman, came into Stradivari’s original stock of wood. Many North American luthiers, dealers and restorers are of the firm opinion he couldn’t withstand the temptation to use it to build the “ultimate Strad.” That question has been argued in many venues. The instrument itself is exemplary-whatever it is.

Very interesting information and well explained video regarding the intonation. * I am an electric guitar player (I studied jazz for many years) and very used to lighter strings by comparison to most acoustic players. I have an elusive .018 gauge plain steel G string (it is sharp on a steel string acoustic at the 12th) and the bone saddle has no room for compensation. If I tune the G string to pitch, at the 12th fret it's very sharp. * The only way I could fix the issue (so far) was to compensate the nut end by in essence bring the nut closer to the first fret by inserting a small metal piece similar to a zero fret (but it is only on the G string...the other strings are fine). * Note: This issue manifested after I lowered the saddle height (it's my second saddle attempt made from bone) as the action was extremely high on this guitar. On my first saddle attempt, it was too low, but strangely the intonation was not an issue. * I am going to try making one more saddle with the height measurement in between the two previous saddles. If you have any suggestions as to how string action height affects intonation, please feel free to share your opinion. * Again, very nice video and very well done. I am subscribing as I enjoyed your style. All the best. Philip NYC Area

I noticed you you used baltic birch plywood for the drum which now costs more than platinum. I haven't found thick walled pvc pipe as some have suggested, so I'm using standard plywood. If it doesn't work I can replace it but feels solid so far

Hi Susan Thankyou so much for that. Precut paper is not usually the correct size for an old commercial drum sander. So I am now going straight to the shed to cut my first drum sander's, home cut paper roll. Will post on how I go with it. 😳😄😄

I had no idea I needed this video. Thanks for going in depth. Black Mountain make a slide with a spring action clamp inside of it to customize the fit. I have also wondered about putting on a silicone ring and then a slide over the ring for a snugger fit. Everything about sizing with guitars takes more thought for us smaller ladies.

Your understanding and knowledge of fret spacing 101 and beyond is impressive to say the least...i do have a suggestion that will help you 10 fold in efficiency and more importantly accuracy using a hacksaw and or a file... it is essential you secure and stabilize your vice the best you can...hope this helps and thank you for sharing, i needed this.

Flouro-carbon strings seem to have a higher density maybe resulting in reduced harmonicity of the string. I tried a set of them on my girlfriend's non adjusted guitar, and they have a really tight and dynamic sound, very articulated all over the neck.

That beginning of the clip where I see some flyers of shell reminds me to get a proper leather skirt and mask and goggle to work with.... I saw Japanese guy where he first cook it is a bowl on stove for a very long time, then he used a hammer to loosened up the abalone from the base and then a very thin scraper to actually remove the abalone ....very thin pieces he made jewelry from... He didn't use any mechanical tools and all by manual hand tools... That is the way I will follow and have more control over the project, even it will go very slow ... I will also use it for guitar inlay graphics I want to add to the designs....

I wonder who decided it has a wonderful tone --played nearly 100 years ago…??….why…..?…those in the ‘know’ are familiar with the fact that some Strads sound rather ‘ordinary’….a reason they are sometimes kept in glass cases ?!

Great explanations. Many of us now use the thinner carbon etc G string. How does this affect bridge compensation? If one has been using the standard fatter G string should the bridge be reshaped if a thinner G string is fitted?

My first woodwork project was an Irish harp (no kit, no internet, just an old book and plans I drew up) but I couldn't hammer a nail straight. My mate, a cabinet maker helped me and taught me basics. One day he said, why couldn't you start with a tool box like everyone else? I still hear his instructions and rationale in my head when I'm about to do something. You remind me of him with your clear instructions, context, comprehension of why, alternatives and open discussion about mistakes. I've been through dozens of videos and this is most helpful.

There is no shortage of fine instruments for people to play, both old and modern. It’s a good thing that a few ancient instruments are being preserved in museums rather than being used up. The Messiah may not sound that good anyway, as is often the case when old instruments show minimal playing wear. Stradivari certainly didn’t hit a home run every time. No violin maker does.

Hello Susan you said "you don't adjust the action using neck relief" and I was wondering what is the correct way to adjust the action? I bought one of these guitars and it has a high action, I couldn't play it more than 15 minutes without getting my left hand tired. Ty for your response. new sub

Fun fact: When selecting wood for his violins, Stradavari would fart into the wood to select the most resonant and warm tone. He would continue this throughout the build process to ensure the instrument maintained the initial tonal quality of the wood. At any point in the process a fart did not produce the desired tonal quality, Stradavari would just shit on it and destroy the instrument. The more you know.

I'm here because I went to snap off a Bay Laurel branch and it was strong and flexible. I gave up. But thought it could be good for a hammer handle. Did some digging and the latin name is Laurus nobilis aka Oregon Myrtle. The wood-database website said, *Common Uses:* Veneer, cabinetry, fine furniture, musical instruments (guitar backs), interior trim, gunstocks, turned objects, and other small specialty items. And went on to say, the wood itself has poor strength values for its weight, and is typically used for more aesthetic purposes, rather than in applications where strength is important.
