I rev match in my Fiesta, works better for me than raising the clutch slowly but still jerks sometimes and I've been driving for over two years now. Diesels you have to downshift at slowspeeds, petrol not so much.
@grzegorzrzepkowski60783 жыл бұрын
No rocket science and it's kind of useless during everyday driving. When downshifitng for slowing down you want that power that brakes you. It might be useful when you downshift before overtaking because braking power isn't needed. Without rev matching it's also really boring and slow when just keeping your foot halfway on clutch and couting seconds when you're actualy ready to let it off and not jerk. Just don't downshift like an idiot and you won't have any jerks.
@gravemind65363 жыл бұрын
@@grzegorzrzepkowski6078 You should rev match at all times you get engine braking effect regardless the extra slowing down in speed when using your clutch without rev matching is literally you just using the clutch as a brake pad which is stupid when you have brakes on all 4 wheels that are far more effective and cheaper to replace than a clutch.
@grzegorzrzepkowski60783 жыл бұрын
@@gravemind6536 I don't agree. People drive manuals cars from years and they don't rev match and they don't cry because of wearing out thier clutch. What if you downshifted and dumped the clutch? Would it still work like a brake pad? I don't think so.

@@ConquerDriving When I’m in gear 2 and I slow down a bit and downshift to gear 1, the car is on the high side of the speed and revs for that gear so around 11mph. And when I bring the clutch up there is a of a jerk. How i avoid that is by braking until around 6/7mph then fully coming off the clutch. But my instructor said you can downshift and come off the clutch even if you are on the high side so still around 10/11mph and slowly, smoothly come off. Is this correct and will that prevent the jerk?

I just started watching your channel but I have really been enjoying your videos. I recently bought a used Mini with a manual transmission. Before I got it home the clutch gave out. The dealer dispatched his mechanic to gaslight me and convince me I burned out the clutch...(literally in 20 minutes). The only car i have ever owned that wasn't manuel was my first which was purchased for me by my parents(a Ford Escot, now I am dating myself). Further, I have worked at valet parking companies where I had to be able to adjust to different clutches. I was told that holding a moment on the bite point burns out a clutch. Your videos have restored by sanity from this gaslighting to reassure me it doesn't. So, since I have replaced the clutch I have been watching these to make sure I don't burn the new one out, too. It turns out I didn't burn out the original clutch. They just sold me a bad clutch. Along the way I have learned other things from your vids, too. So, thanks. I have subscribed. You can never learn too much.
@ConquerDriving4 жыл бұрын
I have videos on clutch wear but as long as you let the car move the clutch will be fine. Holding the car still on a hill using the clutch or using the clutch with too much gas burns the clutch.

Best explanation of rev-matching I’ve seen, thank you. How do you know how much to blip the throttle when rev-matching? Is it a case of observing the RPM for the gear you’re changing down to that the clutch does for you and then trying to hit that same figure? Also, don’t you feel sad that electric cars will make all these skills obsolete?!
@ConquerDriving5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, how much gas to give is the real skill, I can just tell by speed and sound theses days. But you want to raise the rpm by 1,500 or so and get the clutch to catch the rev on the way down. I'm not too sad, we need to move on like we did from horses. Doesn't mean people won't enjoy them anymore.
@OWProductionsBV5 жыл бұрын
Look up the gear ratios for your car. For example: 4rd gear in my car is 1.11:1. 3rd gear is 1.46:1. If I’m in 4th gear at 1750 rpm, the rpms will be (1.46-1.11)/1.11 = 31% higher, so around 2300 rpm. Each car and gear is different, but generally the lower the gear, the higher the gap is. 3rd to 2nd is a bigger gap than 6th to 5th.
@ConquerDriving5 жыл бұрын
@@OWProductionsBV True, but they're only gear ratios and don't consider final drive and everything else, it gets quite complicated to convert revs to wheel speed.
@jordanryan24974 жыл бұрын
They should be relatively similar for each gear, with few minor differences. I've found it's just something you get a feel for after a while.
@spencerajau4 жыл бұрын
The way i learnt rev matching myself is: -First,rev my car(at a standstill of course)to see how fast my rpms go up. -Then, start blipping the gas to know how hard or how much you have to tap the gas. -After that, take a drive and learn your gear ratio.Watch your speedometer and your rpms. For my 5 speed car, 4th gear has a 1:1 ratio(this is the case for most cars;6 speeds would have 5th gear as a 1:1 ratio). This means 4th gear is the same speed as the engine speed so you'll see the needles are pointing at the same direction. -From there I'd know that 3rd gear would be slightly higher, and i learnt that in my case a downshift would be 1000rpms higher than the higher gear .From 4th gear (2500rpm) to 3rd gear (3500rpm). Same goes to the other gears but I dont suggest downshifting to 1st gear -So now i know my gear ratios and how much i have to blip the gas pedal, I start by getting my timing right. It took me 1 day to learn and I'm sure you guys can learn as fast too. (Not all cars are the same so learn you cars as best as you can) Thanks for reading!

I’ve only passed in April 2019 (and only bought a manual car in September). But I’ve been playing on simulators with steering wheel controls for quite a few years so I’ve been practicing driving (with realistic controls) both fast and slow for some time before I touched a real one. While the driving itself can be very different (even for the best of software), it does give you quite a head start in getting used to the manual controls. I’ve been practicing these braking techniques from a few years before I started learning so when I bought my manual car, I only had to get used to the car itself and not the actual method. But like you said, I wouldn’t recommend it to actual rookies either because while it can extend the life of your transmission when done right it can also massively decrease it when done wrong (it might even cause a crash).
