Changing gear at the same time as steering is a challenge for many new drivers. In this video I explain and demonstrate how you change gear without losing control of your steering.

I second that. I was so nervous that i was shaking like crazy but 20 minuttes into the test i was completely calm because it was just second nature. If you are complerely comfortable in the traffic you WILL pass your test. You have to actually make a mistake you usually wouldnt normally do. Just focus on making checking mirrors, blindzones, blinkers etc. second nature and you will ace it

That’s exactly how I felt today! I’ve had 34 hours of lessons so far. Still I’m not confident in certain areas and scared and nervous to drive. My instructor’s has always told his learners learn faster. I’m too slow. I should have improved by now! If I make a mistake, he keeps asking why I do that. I feel so down

My instructor told me to try steering with one hand, with the other on gear stick, after a few lessons. I actually felt like I forgot to drive for a minute. The instructor was surprised at my behavior because he thought this would be easier. What happens is that driving (especially for manuals) is all about developing good habits and a rhythm. Even a small change to the routine, especially for new drivers can be a daunting experience. Of course, with enough on road experience, you can even drive Mr Bean style :P.

American driver here. Of course I learned automatic and have driven that for the last 16 years. I just wanted to say thank you. With your assistance-I must've consumed hours of your videos this month-I took a Civic Si for a 24 hour test-drive this weekend and was able to put maybe 3-4 hours of really good practice in. I felt especially well prepared for the inevitable stalls and followed your advice about not being overtaken with anxiety. I am seriously considering a manual for my next car because the experience was so engaging and fun and I genuinely mean it when I say I don't believe I would have had this level of success without your video lessons. Sincerely, thank you.

I think it's even harder than learning how to start smoothly from a stop without stalling. I mastered starting from a stop, but I still can't shift while turning. I'll give these techniques a try, especially the part with practicing by having one hand on the shifter while making turns.

You should either arrive at a junction with the proper gear (slow down to the appropriate speed), or shift up after the junction. At least that is what I've been tought back then. The goal is maximum control, a little rev ain't gonna hurt, unless you are revving the nuts of the car and the transmission in an frequent manner.

@kouzou8 probably it was as it was because the aim is to teach how to turn without coasting. while the clutch is disengaged, you can not rely on the engine to pull, or to brake. of course in real life the clutch is pushed for a finger-snap duration. clutch out, change, bite, release. but even i saw people turning with a partially engaged or completely disengaged clutch.. which is not that safe considering you have steering an braking control, but little to no engine one :/. however i agree with you.

What matters is you get there, not the time it takes. After all, you only need to do the journey once.

This was my one roadblock (pardon the pun) when learning to drive. For some reason my brain couldn't comprehend the idea of bringing the clutch back up before or during the turn. Instead I would keep the clutch down and go drifting through the turn like I'm driving on ice In case there's anyone else out there struggling with the same problem, I'll tell you how I fixed A downhill road with a turn on it, with the new road being at an incline This forced me to use the break to control my speed, and I had no choice but to bring the clutch up or the car wouldn't make it up the incline after I had turned I did this 3 or so times and then it magically cemented itself in my brain

Fantastic video, Richard! Oh, and have you seen the new images of the new Skoda Fabia that is hopefully going to be released this year? I think it would be a perfect fit for the Conquer Driving channel!

Have you seen the new Seat León and the new 7-speed DCT transmission? It’s now a very small gear selector.

I've sincerely become a one-arm-bandit richard, one hand on the steering wheel other resting on the gear stick. Is it a bad habit, to that excessive extend? I find it super comfortable. Doing the 'window washing' hand maneuver when turning. People who 'feed the wheel' with both hands ... well it, looks awkward and takes longer... thoughts?

As long a you have good control of the car it's good enough for me but may not be good enough for an examiner. You do have more control with both hands but it's only really needed at speed - for example not many racing drivers use one hand.

01:49 That's how i do steering and control the gear. so you could always maximize the potential of the vehicle while driving or racing, i only use both hands in steer only at high speed comers
