This is legit a part of puppy socialization training, getting them used to Weird Things so they won't freak out over new and strange stuff in public. When my family bred working dogs, my parents kept a stack of different surfaces for the puppies to walk over, as well as flashy or loud objects to interact with or otherwise be in the presence of. The dog has to trust the human to keep doing whatever the human told them to do, even when that action directly causes something they weren't expecting (like walking over bubblewrap or flipping a light switch for a disabled person) or disallows them to respond to something potentially very scary or startling (like a vacuum cleaner being turned on, a car alarm going off, or a gun being shot).

That's all really interesting and obviously makes a lot of sense. I worked with an animal shelter for a number of years, my mother was also on the board, and so many of the dogs at the shelter had anxiety issues that specialized training like that could have helped to lessen. People don't realize just how large a part of dog training comes from a dog's ability to understand and trust its owner and environment.
