The "stuff" you find on your walks is amazing. Here in the UK people just don't do that. In fact you can't do that. If your garbage doesn't fit inside a specific type of wheelie bin the bin men won't take it. Instead you must take your waste to a depot where, for many items, they will charge you a fee to take the stuff away. You could save this "stuff" from landfill and auction it on your channel to fund your collecting habits! Win win! 🤣 Truly amazing finds you have there! 👏

Andrew, I'm a Brit living in Ohio. In much of the US the garbage collection is private, so free market competition is in play. Don't annoy the customer, or they'll go elsewhere. Where I live they'll take away two large appliances per year for no additional fee. It is $5 after that. Other than that, if you can get it to the curb, they'll take it, in my experience. On the downside, the tea is awful here, but the people where I live are wonderful.

Love the show. I`ve been watching for a couple of years now. I love the poor man`s flea market and could not believe when you found the HARP advertisement piece. I laughed when you said you never heard of Dundalk, Ireland. I`ve lived in Dundalk all my life and the brewery is about 200 yards from my house. Keep doing what you`re doing and keep telling those stories. All the best, Tommy Hughes.

I did the same thing until the 1980s, worked on my own cars, even rebuilt an engine once. After I bought my first "sideways" engine (Chevy), that was the end of that. I needed to replace a common part, something I had done to other cars. Nothing doing. I took it to the local garage. The mechanic said, "You'll have to take it to the dealer." We don't work on those. The dealer jacked the car up, removed the front tire, removed an access panel, and used special tools (available on to dealers) to replace the part. I missed the days when you could sit with both arms and both legs under the hood to work.

Unbelievable what some people will toss out. With all the stuff you've found on your nightly walks, you could have quite a lucrative side-business reselling on Marketplace. I share your enthusiasm for rescuing such items and it is a very satisfying feeling to keep them out of landfills and give them a new life by those who can appreciate them. Always look forward to your show - best thing on the Internet and better than anything on TV. Keep up the good work!

Great save John! Many homes in Queens were built with one stained glass window as an accent piece from the 1920's until WWII. Sadly, many of them were discarded in the 1980's during the home remodeling boom. They are beautiful pieces to be saved and treasured.

I just saw a few on C-list this week, and they are going for up to a couple hundred dollars, if you want to sell them. But always save any good historical items. I used to drink Harp beer with Guinness. It's called a black and tan. Glad you saved the sign as well. Wayne out West

Hi Scout, the easiest car I’ve ever worked on is my 2005 Holden Monaro with the LS1 in it. I had to change the water pump and no joke it was only a 40 minute job. I couldn’t believe how easy it was. That included replacing the radiator, thermostat and housing and the serpentine belt. I did a stained glass course too, and I bought the tools and I haven’t opened that toolbox in 20 years😂. On my videos I call it my favourite junk shop but it’s actually a huge shed next to the rubbish dump and people can drop stuff off for free instead of paying to send it to landfill. Some stuff is also picked off the actual landfill by special workers and brought back there as well. You never know what will turn up so it’s a real lucky dip like your walks and boy have I been lucky over the years. Nothing is priced either, you just take whatever you want to the counter and ask for a price. The guy behind the counter will take a look and give you a price on the spot. Sounds weird but once you get used to it, it seems pretty normal as the prices are always very cheap. Eg I payed $40 for and electric drain cleaning eel with all the tools and about 6 sections of eel. All that was wrong with it was a broken wheel and I found a replacement wheel while I was there. It would cost 10 times that to buy a used one anywhere else. Some people are so dumb and get a bit shitty because they think that as this place gets stuff for nothing then they should pay next to nothing too, but of course there are wages and rent and utilities to pay and they give thousands of dollars to charity each month as well. It doesn’t occur to them that if it wasn’t for these guys then they wouldn’t be able to get it either as it would all go to landfill. I usually get everything together and get a job lot price. Quite often I can fill the back of my Land Cruiser for around $50 with all this stuff I didn’t know I needed. A lot of rubbish dumps in Australia have these places now so when I go on holiday I try and find the local tip😂😂😂 Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

You could probably sell the stuff you find on your walks. I remember driving to see my mother 4 1/2 hr trip one way. In my 1980 chevy. The water pump went out about half way there. Stoped at the auto parts store. They said they had one took it to the parking lot changed it out took the old one back in and got the core charge. The entire thing including a new belt was 30 bucks and had it done in around 30 min. In my defense, the parts were still I bit warm. 😬 I still miss that old truck!😢

@ScoutCrafter Жыл бұрын
Holy Cow! That was fast! Water pumps can be tricky, some attach with 4 bolts (2 on each side) while others have a large opening and a series of about 8 bolts in a circle. Those wind up pinching a gasket or coming warped from the factory... LOL That's why you always cross your fingers when you start it back up! =D

My first car was a 1977 Chevy Nova with the straight six. It was almost exactly what you showed (the blue engine), though in 77 it no longer had the coil and points as in your picture, but it was a joy to work on. You could change anything super easy and could practically sit in the engine compartment next to the engine while you did it! I bought it in 1991 and drove it until about 2003. For the record I am driving a nice old 2006 Buick LaCrosse and I am sure I will drive it for at least a few more years until the rust gets too bad.

That is great advice about keeping your car in tune BEFORE winter hits. It is really miserable to try to get a car going in cold nasty weather. Reliability is important any time, but especially in winter when you can get caught in a life threatening situation if you're not careful. I envy the life you get out of your batteries. I get good quality batteries, and I'm lucky to get five years of life before replacement. I use an engine block heater, and think they help with cold starts. Nothing against Irish beer, but I'd take the stained glass window any day. Thank you for saving this small piece of history. It would have been lost forever if it had gone to the dump.

I’ll have an hour or two in it. I know it’s cheaper then taking it to a repair shop. I remember opening the hood on 1967 s s. It was dirty. It took me about 6 hours to remove the engine and clean the compartment and put it back. That was the good old days. The simple vehicle is gone. I would have brought both the sign and glass home too. My 1980 Chevy pickup had a straight 6 and I could sit on the fender wells to work on the vales. Sure miss the ease of car repairs. Great scores on the walk. Put up on local Flea Market page and they will be gone!

I have the same jump starter. I save my old batteries that still seem to work and I have a trickle charger that I keep them topped off and a few months back I saw a video of a guy who made an alternate power supply for his boiler using a car battery and an inverter and I made one too, and between the two batteries that I have, I am pretty sure I can keep myself going for most of my essential needs for a day or two.

Thanks Scoutcrafter. Glad you saved those items. I'm hoping you'll do a video on repairing that stained glass.

My grandfather always said: february always comes with a summersday or two. It is often true that. I’m happy we can’t put garbage on the street like that in my area, I would be in so much more trouble than I already am. I hope you’ll have a great weekend!

My Grandmother used to say March comes in like a lamb and out like a lion. Even though most people say the opposite. The truth is we used to get a couple warm days in the beginning of March and then just when you think you are in the clear BANG we would get show at the end of March! LOL

leave the beer sign, bring home the stained glass. That's like my gym time when I carry home some scrap metal to recycle. Thank you ScoutCrafter.

Hi Scoutcrafter Those are good finds I would have taken them. I am sure garbage men throw stuff in the truck they would love to keep but where would they put it to save it. I used to repair broken windows in garbage trucks quite often and the one thing they did save is nude magazines they would always be behind the seats.

David- I remember as a kid every so often we would find a nude magazine and it kept us entertained for the whole day. 😂👍

Your 'yota is very clean and rust free for NY and I say that being a California resident. Those FJ Cruisers are like Tacoma's and Wrangler's they really hold their value and from my experience with Toyota vehicles, they really don't die as long as you keep up on the maintenance.

One time my wife got a nasty fiberglass splinter in her hand and you couldn’t see it. But you feel it and it can be very painful and uncomfortable. A skin doctor was able to get it out with a dye and micro examination but it bothered her for over a month

I think you were smart to grab the Harp sign and the stained glass. Why don't you sell them on-line. Specify pick up only. Make a few bucks to help pay for your alternator. Nice video. Thank you for the fiberglass info. I had no idea, but I do have a fiberglass hammer handle that needs repurposing.

My friend when I was growing up was given a 1966 Chevy from the old man next door. This car was a straight 6. I remember him standing in the engine compartment next to the engine with his feet on the ground. There was so much room. Now? You can’t even see the pavement below your car.

First off my best male friend was a garbage man from 1959 to 1969 and worked at the city dump before that. He had and has many wonderful things at his home which is in the middle of his 3 acre wrecking / junkyard that he has ran since 1953 to the present. He started it at 11 years old and is now 80 and still runs it 5 days a week. In 1957 he bought a 1940 Dodge 1 ton flatbed that he still uses everyday at his business. In 1959 he bought a 1940 Dodge 3/4 ton flatbed and added 1 ton running gear and made it into his tow truck. He still drives it everyday. In 1969 he bought a 5 ton Dodge garbage truck and added a flatbed to it to haul car bodies for scrap. It is driven weekly. He has a large collection of other 1939 to1947 Dodge trucks. Some run and some are for parts. His house and property is loaded with history, much of it from the town of Napa Calif. We have been friends for 54 years and even tho I longer work for or live near him, we still talk on the phone once a month. Working for him was not work, it was a adventure.

My Dad's Honda Pilot has always had a power steering noise ever since he bought it used a few years ago. No amount of fluid could fix the noise, and the cold always made it worse, but the steering has never had an issue (so far).

If I had to choose, although I like it the beer sign would have been left at the curb and the stain glass window would have come home. There is so much history, beauty and craftsmanship in treasures like that. Just like an old tool.

On that hatchet I do like that you don’t put a mirror on everything. Something that is going to be a daily driver or something you use in your tool rotation, you don’t want the mirror just for the same reasons you mentioned. But then there’s those couple you put that mirror on and it’s amazing.
@ScoutCrafter

I agree- only certain tools look good with a mirror finish because they tend to be big finger, print magnets, and hard to maintain for that fact. 😃👍
