I was an80's child,and the television shows back then ,even to the 90's were way more family friendly than today. Back then,kids didn't need supervision 24/7 Playgrounds were literal death traps. Our babysitting was "lock the door,do not answer,do not answer the phone, I best not see nobody here" We rode our bikes all over,drank right from the hose,stayed out until streetlights came on.and we had a healthy dose of act right

A few years older here. We used to go to the mall and get coffee then just sit and people watch. It was a big thing to do that up until smartphones took over. Before smartphones, people looked at each other, engaged eyes and facial expressions. We talked to each other and had genuine human interaction. God, I miss that so much 😢

Excellent commentary ... Hello from Kent, England (on the South East coast, just outside London) . I was born in '71 (so, firmly Gen-X) and quit my well paid senior-management role in 2019. Now I work part-time as a bicycle mechanic , and make less than half the money . ...... and yet I'm twice as happy. I got rid of my expensive watch, my smart-phone, my suits and ties, Facebook , Linked-In, and everything else that made me feel like a pathetic corporate slave . If you don't need it, and it doesn't bring you joy, then throw (or give) it away . People are definitely sad, angry and depressed thesdays , but it's far worse than just that ....... people are just numb . They don't care anymore .... and they don't FEEL anything about anything . They're totally ambivalent about everything that SHOULD matter . They know the difference between right and wrong, but there is no incentive to even try to be a decent person anymore, because nobody gives a sh*t . We;re all just caught in the trap, and then we die . I've tried to narrow down my own life to a the handful of things that really matter, and truly make me happy .......... It doesn't cost much at all . A bike ride, a walk in the woods , a stroll along the beach, and a cold beer in my garden with a close friend. The exact same things that made me happy 30 years ago (surprise, surprise) . I was broke then, and I'm still broke now, so what was the point of it all ? All those wasted years. Find out what makes you truly happy, and then only ever do those few things, and nothing else :-) Good luck on your journey ........ all of you.

Mind blown!! Thank you for such a profound response and for sharing your very true thoughts on this subject matter!! Yes, no one seems to care, nothing matters but buy more crap you don't need and stare at your cell phone for hours every day. I am not one of those people and am rewinding myself back to when I was happier, just like you did!

I've walked at our local mall for 20 yrs, except during the Pandemic. It was always a pleasant experience and people would make eye contact, smile and say 'Hi' or 'Good Morning". Now, people won't even make eye contact, let alone say 'Morning' or anything. You're right--people just seem to be not happy anymore. Sad.

I’m 62, and am a home body. Buttttt I was a contract nurse and traveled for several yrs and part of those yrs, I lived in my 5th wheel and absolutely loved it. I would park on the lake for months, then move else where. It was a great life. Would love to live in a 5th wheel again. I live in an appt now and it’s got its pros and cons. But Wendy, you go for it! I can’t wait to see what and where you end up. I can’t handle going to Walmart anymore. It’s crazy. I order my groceries and p/u. It’s sad though as I use to run into friends and co workers and even chat with a stranger. Not anymore. Like you said, everyone had there phone to their ear. No one smiles and or says a kind hello; excuse me etc. anyways look forward to coming along with your “ New Journey”.

I'm 57, a few years ago, I went through a lot of hell to the point where I said, "That's it. I'm going to Ireland!" I had a fear of flying, but at the rate things were going, I was going to die anyway. I realized that all the hell was a sign from the universe. This week, I was rear-ended on the freeway. I told the officer that it was a sign to move. I contacted a real estate agent. Yeah, I was like you. I retired early from my government job. I was surrounded by woke people who were against the Constitution and wanted staff to all think the same. Now I am writing a book.

No one even stops to think if any of this stuff is real or realize that they are in the maze. Clearly there has been a continued deterioration in our society. I refuse to give up my morals/values. It's like a battle of good & evil out here! I started seeking ways to maintain my happiness by exploring travel to places less consumed with materialism. I hope the best for you on your journey. In America we pay close to 60% of our paychecks to taxes. Taxes for federal, state, property, sales, etc. That's huge. You only get to keep 40% of your money. I don't believe people realize that. It's highway robbery. We are slaves to the system. My husband has been trying to find a part time job but doesn't get called back. I know there are jobs out there but what's going on? I'm right there with you Wendy. I have also planned a no spend year. I'm in the same age bracket still working and I just want to save my money for investments and I really don't need anything else. Wendy, cell phones addiction is as real as a drug addiction, or any other addiction you can think of. People don't even realize they have a problem because everyone is just like them. It's sad. People don't have any hobbies or anything to keep them occupied. Their cell phone is their entire life. They are boring as hell. I do remember people back in the 70's and 80's that smiled and looked like they were happy. Like you say, they look like zombies now. I get the fact you want to escape the matrix. I retired last year, and its not what I thought it would be. I too have thought about selling my home and living in my suv to break the monotony. Society in general has gone so far down the tubes. I was watching an old game show the other day from the 80's, and noticed how well dressed the contestants were and how well they carried themselves. People just don't care anymore, and people like us are the minority now. Good luck to you in your new adventures next year.

Hi Wendy wow …was born in 1964 and I totally agree with everything you are saying. The cell phone addition is making zombies of everyone. Even at funerals people have them out recording how “sad”they are. I make a point of smiling and saying hello to people. It’s amazing how some people (usually younger) look startled when a stranger says “good morning”. People do seem sad and fed up and miserable but it’s no wonder because there is no “depth” to their existence. I totally agree with the job interview situation too … you literally have to jump hoops to get a shitty job paying peanuts that often doesn’t even pay enough to keep a roof over your head or food on the table. People need to wake up and get their noses out of their cell phones and see what’s going on around them. I’m glad some of us are waking up and smelling the rises!

It’s not just Capitalism and debt - at least in this system we have the freedom to move around and embrace our free will. With the encroaching Socialist/Communist regime we are now under here in the United States we will lose all of our freedoms and free will - I’d rather be in a bit of debt and live in a free capitalist society, as opposed to the “you will own nothing, be restricted (or denied) movement, and you will like it” scenario of Socialist/communist/Global elitist regimes. Just look at the CCP in China, Socialist regimes like Venezuela, or Islamic regimes around the world.
@universaltruth2025
@universaltruth2025 Жыл бұрын
@@suncat991 Agree. taking away the ability to exercise personal agency or even possibility to change and improve people’s lives and circumstances will kill motivation and lead to apathy and depression. “Equality” sounds good in theory, but if its enforced by the govt it takes away the incentive to strive to change one’s circumstance. People are hierarchical and competitive in nature as well as being cooperative and interdependent . Capitalism seems the only economic system that can meet those two innate needs. The elite sell the idea of a communist utopia where everyone is on some mythical level playing field where there are no hierarchies. And the woke leftists fall for it. But all that happens is that the hierarchies get shifted from a more organic form to those that are artificially imposed and that everyone pretends don’t exist. And taking away the individual incentive to improve in the process.

And if you're a woman -- esp Gen X, where we know and saw how the previous generations of women were basically endentured servants (and some really were) -- it's especially tough to get away from the hamster wheel. We're purposefully kept at subsistance level. Women are discouraged from going after what would make us self-sufficient in this society. I had a landlord literally ruin my gardens every year by paying another tenant to kill my plants. Some people who have just enough, like an urban landlord, are threatened by people they think should be grateful for what they have (a single female tenant shouldn't fly too close to the sun and request to grow a garden on an empty 5x5 plot) and will take action against someone who dares to gain stability not offered by the mainstream. I wish people understood how common this is. You have to hide your plans to do this because many, many people who live mainstream are offended that you think differently. It's a primal threat to them. @@halstonandharleys

Be careful. I wish I'd touched it out cuz now I could have a decent retirement, so I messed up. Don't listen to me

I know what you mean. I stopped working when I had my third child 12 years ago. My husband has been the sole breadwinner. Now at 52 when I have applied for jobs all my work experience before that seems to count for nothing, its as though I have no degree and no work experience when I look for work - I don’t even get short listed. I need to find work though as times are getting tougher so will keep looking.

Yes…3 years ago in Dollar Tree trying to pick out some nice cards to send….a lady comes up behind me…stands right behind me talking on her phone. Where I could hear her whole conversations..I did say something to her, but she was real smarty pants. No I did not escalate the situation.

I love this Wendy. Really resonating with you with all you say. My husband and I were talking recently about how convenience has really screwed over experience. Getting things delivered to our door, instead of going to the shops. I remember record shops, and book shops, and going to Blockbuster to rent a movie. Waking up in time to get to the store before it opened to buy a hair dye because I wanted to *impulsively* dye my hair a random colour. Impulse nowadays has not the same meaning at all. We had the same problems back then, but at least we were actually interacting. The only way we could communicate was to go to our friends and neighbours doors and actually talk to them. On the flip side, the internet has provided me with an outlet to a career I never thought I could have as an independent singer and songwriter - albeit lonely. But it suits my personality and mh as someone who copes better alone. It is both a blessing and a curse.

If souls had dopplegangers, I think you might be mine!! This hit home so hard (many of your videos do) but this one frighteningly so. I am 54 too and really just want to be a nomad/drifter. Done with corporate America, done with too much stuff, done with meaningless and superficial relationships, and done with regrets and not meeting my goals with all the things I wanted to learn or lost opportunities when younger due to messed up childhood, relationships, and lack of my own growth. Want to move forward as fast as possible because like you said no one knows our last day. Living like this is soul-crushing and I feel trapped and squelched. The only difference is I found a goal book that actually had me set intentions and segment backward to plug tiny steps into a planner by calendar day and it holds me accountable. Those things rarely if ever work for me but this young lady made a great vision book/goal book that actually is sensible and WORKED for me. I just now need to realign my desires appropriately to meet the long term goals of maybe buying an RV and skipping town!!! Oh yeah and the issue of what to do for work and not being around my 4 adult kids...lol.

You and I have some of the same ideas. For some reason, I just bought a lot of shoes that I am never going to wear. Since I am starting up my soap business in 2024, the bulk of my money will be funneled into that venture. I am waiting for the rains to die down a bit before going back to Goodwill this spring. A lot of stuff has got to go. I even told people to stop buying me Christmas presents or presents of any kind. My friend is going to sell some of my vintage stuff for me. Shopping will be for my soapmaking, groceries, and necessities only. Some stuff for my dad in Alabama. Thats it. I wish you and the cats the best on your new adventure

I even sold my townhome when I was 53 cuz it was more responsibility and work than I wanted. It was also too much space. My new husband had an older condo that we CAN leave for 3 months at a time and it will be fine. We will have it paid off before we turn 65 in less than 5 years and then we just pay HOA fees and they take care of everything, and anything that isnt covered by them is covered by a cheap renters policy. I also practice daily gratitude, because someone always has it worse than we do and I want to remember that. Im also hyper aware that tomorrow is not guaranteed, since I was widowed at 49 years old. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. So you must be present today and be in the now and be thankful for everything you have no matter how meager.

I think we have come to the point as humanity where we have produced, stored and got used to have too much stuff, too much of everything. Overconsumption is artificially generated by big corporations as it is what keeps them going. People do not need all that stuff but they think they must have it or want it... The thing is - if majority stops buying , we will slowly go back into no jobs , no pay, poverty and no future world.. There won't be any jobs left if we all go self-sufficient , minimalistic and recyclable ... It's a vicious circle. And what majority needs to buy is food - we are not self producing our food anymore, as humanity. We are buying it - and for that we need money... And to earn money we need to have jobs, so we need to produce and sell sell sell - do you see what I mean? I am all for not buying any more stuff , but there is a bigger picture behind it. Greetings and blessings for 2024!xxx

You did a good job of presenting a synopsis of how our economy works and why it will ultimately end (probably very soon) in its present form of the last 100 years with metropolises and then globalism at its center. Perhaps it will go back to smaller villages/communities producing whatever it is their needs require and exchanging (bartering?) their goods on a micro level.

Hi Wendy, If I lived in your state I’d be your faithful friend, for sure. I can relate so much… So much to say, I know how you feel. Just be certain you want to sell your home. I know that having a home is both a blessing and a curse in so many ways; you have to balance these on paper and on your mind too. Possibly you may want to go part-time with your job. Work is a burn/out; I think no one should have to work 40 plus hours a week. Life has to be in balance and people really can’t do that working so many hours. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the channel! We need to talk some more.

Have you ever thought of organizing a get together? I'd totally be up for that. I have zero in common anymore with even friends I've had since I was little. I feel like an alien on this planet lately. I often think about hearing Wayne Dyer speak of Tolstoy's book The Death of Ivan Ilyich ... the character in the book is on his death bed and starts thinking what if his whole life was wrong, etc. Chills... Hi Wendy. I'm totally with you on everything you say! I often think about the subjects you have spoken about. We come from a generation that is lucky enough to have experienced a world that is free from tech and social media...yet we are still young enough to take away the best bits of today's strange era - one example is pursuing other avenues than the 9-5 which was all we knew in our time. We are a special generation because we have experienced both times. You talk a lot of sense and I think your voice is so important to many people across many generations. Our generation needs to speak out to the young ones as they know no different to this era. I really hope this video goes viral for all to hear 🤍 I look forward to seeing your journey. Best Wishes.
