I enjoyed making this video, and I hope some of you found it useful and/or educational. But please bear in mind that this is only a suggestion as to how to get the best possible experience of the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony. I.e. avoiding the queues and actually taking in what’s going on. If you don’t want to do it this way, and want to be with the crowd at the Palace instead, that’s fine. But please, don’t chastise me for trying to show you a better way! SIDE NOTE: I’m not implying that the Queen’s Guard will shoot you dead if you misbehave, I’m merely suggesting that they’re allowed to open fire on civilians in the right circumstances. What usually happens if a tourist is being a significant nuisance is that they press a button and the Metropolitan Police will come and deal with you instead.

Hi, proud American here with a word to my fellow Americans and to anyone who is not a citizen of the UK who hopes to one day go to England on vacation one day. These soldiers who wear the red tunics and have the large bearskin hats are not mall security guards. They are not hired actors. They are *real soldiers* who are carrying *real firearms* loaded with real ammo and tipped with real, and really sharp, bayonets. Their job is to protect the Royal Family and other important people and places. They have underwent a lot of training in order to be able to wear those uniforms and are rightly proud. Let them be proud. Let them enjoy the feeling that they get when they put their uniforms on. Don’t mock them, don’t try to make them laugh or smile, don’t get in their way, and don’t try to make their service a misery to them. And yes, if you are stupid enough to stand in their way they will absolutely, and rightly, knock you out of the way and they probably won’t be nice about it. And should you be stupid enough to try to hurt the Royal Family these soldiers can and will shoot your stupid self, so don’t go trying or you’ll find out what awaits you in the afterlife really quickly.

We couldn't do this because they barricaded all the walkways and implemented a one way system around the parks. So if you get here and you experience something similar, just go north and watch the Changing of the Horse Guards instead. Much quieter!

Yes we came down on Friday ended up walking 13 and a half miles lol! To say how busy it was it felt really laid back and chilled. It was nice having them roads closed down, no pollution lol! @@nicolakate8496 yeah, I think it'd be a good idea to wait until things have calmed down! I don't have another video on the Horse Guards, the footage I have is in this video. But what I will say is that you can get "up close and personal" to the Horse Guards and you get a much more intimate experience than the Changing of the Foot Guards. You can literally stand next to them and take pictures etc. I think your mum and nephew would probably enjoy that!

I have a great uncle, William Philip Gullivan, who was born in England in 1910. He served in the Royal Guard from the age of 20 until he was 73. In 2012 he received a letter from the royal family saying that he was to be knighted by the Queen. My great uncle then wrote to ask if it would be possible to be knighted by Prince Philip. This wish was granted and so my great uncle was knighted by Prince Philip in September 2012 in the presence of the Queen and was allowed to call himself Sir from then on. I was at the ceremony in London in Parliament. In 2017 he was awarded a medal by Prince Charles at Kensington Palace for his services to the royal family and his home country. I was also with him at several Trouping the Colour events. The best was when, at the age of 102, he was able to take part in the parade for Queen Elizabeth II's 60th anniversary on the throne. He died eight years later at the age of 110, two years before the Queen. I have good memories of him. One of my friends gave me a button from his jacket. And I still have the medal he was awarded. May he and the Queen rest in peace.

The changing of the guard at Windsor is much more spectator friendly event. You can follow the new Guard all the way from Wellington barracks up to the Castle. If you have a visitor pass you can then go into the castle and watch the whole change over from just feet away. No railings, no huge crowds. The old guard then marches back to barracks through the town. Grew up in Windsor, great memories.

Well done! I especially appreciate how you continually pointed out that the guards shouldn't be touched or harassed. They DO NOT CARE who you are they will yell at you and, in some cases, point the rifle at you. I don't understand how people think they can act foolishly next to a guard for Tik Tok videos or actually touch these soldiers. There is absolutely nothing more satisfying than watching a guard march away and ruin somebody's stupid video or shout at some entitled tourist. Rule of thumb...when they stamp their feet, look out! You're welcome. It's pretty simple once you understand how the ceremony works. Even if you only make two stops, you'll see more than if you were to cram yourself at the Palace gates.

Thank you, that makes me British. I have enjoyed watching them several times and I loved it. I like them doing what they do “Decently and in Order” as per the Bible. They are really committed in all what they do. I thank them all for entertaining the public unaware. Sometimes they play Christian music which I really enjoy as a Christian. June 9 . We caught the end of this by accident. Didnt realise the ceremony was on. Got to Buck Palace about 11.40, ceremony was all over, place was rammed with tourists, couldn't see a thing. we did this and it is very cool and different, but as a tourist I would suggest a couple things. First starting at St. James is cool idea, but we watched them completely leave St. James and got great close up photos. The crowds were too thick for us to keep up the guards on the march down the street from St. James, but it's okay just let them go. Also, on our day the guards did not have on the traditional red and big bear hats so I wasn't sure what was going on at first. They had on formal military uniforms. we skipped step 2 and just went to the Mall and crossed it and then made our way down towards the palace, along St James park and crossed Spur Rd. at the crosswalk and actually got very close to circle barricade, as the band marching was coming into the circle (which is great because, honestly the tourists want to see all the pomp and circumstance), then we went to wellington barracks and saw some of that. The we headed back just a 50-100 meters to the corner of Spur Rd and Birdcage rd. Just FYI the police did on our day rope off some spots for parts of the sidewalk initially, so you cant always get to the spots in this video. We just relaxed in the shady lawn area just to the left of the palace and waited 30 minutes for the guards to come from buckingham to Wellington barracks and this was great just like this video said!!! The police finally un-roped the area on birdcage rd right where spur rd meets it and I got on the sidewalk and had the guard coming right at me towards wellington barracks and it was an amazing!!!! We skipped Clarence house, too much running around. If you do just what this video says you do see amazing stuff but it would feel like you miss all the fanfare and excitement of the crowd. This way I did it I got to see both the fanfare and some of the cool guard stuff. I think I would like to just take in the parade and pomp on one day and then on another day follow this video more closely. Also, at St. James there might be a tour group and you could just follow them, they'll get you the gist of this video too.

For sure. There's many different ways to see the CoG ceremony and no one way is superior for a specific individual than another. Personally (and most of the time), I just watch the guards from St James's, then Wellington Barracks, then go north to Horse Guards Parade and catch the second half of their ceremony, skipping Clarence House - then I can escape the crowds via White Hall. I think the worst thing you could do is stand with the crowd and see absolutely nothing, that we can agree on.

They usually play modern music at the Palace, which starts at 12:00pm and last for about 50 minutes. But as mentioned in the video, if you want to be at the Palace gates, you'll need to be there two hours before!

Yeah, those crowds are massive, especially during the summer months. Your best bet is to follow the route as shown, but also after visiting Clarence house to watch a guard change, walk all the way to Horse Guards Parade to see the last half of the ceremony there. Glad this video helps!

I have to say that although wt u say makes sense, for someone who is visiting London for the first time this too much info! very hard to follow. so maybe instead, if one wants to stand in one place and maybe follow that guards at one point.. where would that place be?

Thanks. But this really isn't too much information to stand at three different locations at various times. If you did want to watch the CoG ceremony and only stand in one place, you'll be queuing at the gates at 9:00am for an 11:00am start, as mentioned in the video. Good luck with that. Everywhere else will be crowded to holy hell to the point where you won't be able to move, and I'm not joking. If you don't want to spend your holiday waiting, watch the guards coming out at Wellington Barracks, then go north to Horseguards Parade to watch the Changing of the Horse Guards instead.

Hello, can one leave the area before the completion of changing of guards, or is it barricaded for pedestrians as well? Basically, I would like to leave by public transport and attend the Lords Cricket Ground tour at 12:30 PM. Is that doable?

You're free to leave, but you might have a hard time getting out of the crowds and onto the tube. Lord's Cricket Ground is famously in St John's Wood, which is on the Jubilee line, so you'll need to get the tube at Green Park and ride it to St John's Wood for your tour. Correct, yes! Generally King Charles can change it if he wants to. But it's tradition to stick to what your predecessor has done, hence why the ceremony has been largely unchanged for hundreds of years.

@@UltimateBucketList I live in Scotland, if you come to Scotland again, I suggest you could visit some Scots Former Royal Residences: Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Falkland Palace and Linlithgow Palace(it is a ruin and close this year due to the repairs)

As silly as it sounds, yeah. But unless you're pressed up right at the gates themselves, you won't see the Changing of the Guards anyway. With this itinerary, you'll see everything else, but completely unobstructed.

@@salemk.3098 depending on the timings, you can generally see the guards crossing each other when the old guard leaves St James' Palace walking towards Buckingham. They will generally cross on the mall just after the Victoria Memorial and you'll see them salute each other. Alternatively, if you don't want to go back to the same places twice, after seeing the new guard leave Wellington Barracks, walk towards Horse Guards Parade and you'll still be able to catch the Changing of the Horse Guards.

Just a quick note. When answering the question about why they wear the 'funny hats and costumes' you made some mistakes. The Red tunics of the foot guards was so, back when they fought inn wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, the enemy spotter (a person who counts how many men you have) would have a hard time counting the men because red from a distance is the hardest colour to see (it all blends into one). Secondly, the bearskins first purpose is not to make the men seem taller in battle. Back when they used to fight against cavalry forces the cavalrymen would swing their swords down to try and slash the guards faces. The bearskin cap came below that point to just above the eyes so when the cavalry did try to slash the face they would hit the bearskin and the guard could get them with their bayonet. Overall though a very great and informed video

There's many different varying theories about the red tunics. There's also the notion that red was simply the cheapest colour dye, hence why it was used so much. But other than that, thanks for your input.

Personally, I don't believe that term was 'offensive' at all, as the whole point of the description is to show that the Queen's (now King's) Guard don't care who you are - they will enforce the rules strictly and without mercy.
