Are these active duty ROK troops, or are they re-enactors? i have to wonder what is the source for the movements of these troops, I can imagine the weapons would be known from historical artifacts & & the costumes could be known from historic representations. I am doubtful of how they would know the movements of the troops from that time.

It's an reenactment. Seoul city recruits several workers for this part-time job. Joseon Dynasty(former state of ROK) left a massive amount of documents describing national events in form of paintings. These documents are called Ui-gwe(儀軌)s. We referred to these documents a lot.

Yes, you can pretty much take pictures anytime and they did announce that at a certain point, we could walk right up to the guards and take photos and film them, which I obviously did.

You mean nowadays? Well.....I'm afraid not. There's no royal family in Korea anymore, so this event is a reenactment of that of Joseon Dynasty.

That is up to the Seoul Metropolitan Police and the Army's Capital Defense Command. This gate and the plaza are within walking distance of the Presidential Palace, so the security is reinforced there at all times, also because the US embassy is on this very plaza.

100% 조선시대와 같을 수는 없습니다. 왕실근위대가 사라진게 언젠데.... 아무리 역사서를 참고해서 만든다고 해도 당시와 똑같이 재현할수는 없죠. 그냥 관광상품이라고 보시면 됩니다. 사실 저렇게 소박하게 유지하는 데도 만만치 않은 비용이 들어갑니다.

Highly unlikely that there would be a band playing music. That's a 18th century European tradition for long marches and has thus been a part of many changes of the guard since.

Numerous details remain in the preserved royal archives and administrative order documents (clothes color, ranks, event procedures, arrangement of musical instruments, etc.), and this is a maintenance of tradition. 조선도 16세기 이후부턴 총 덕후라 할만큼 일본에게 당한게커서 그런지 총으로 무장한 비율이 굉장히 높은데(정조 화성행차도만 봐도 거의 전원 총 무장) 활을 끼고 있는모습은 외국인들시선에 조선이 총기를 도입 안한 나라인줄 오해하게 할수도 있겠네요. 외국 왕실 근위대도 전부 총으로 무장했는데 21세기에 활이라니....

ThatDutchguy well that is true...but the changing of the guard is a ceremonial and a way to keep the tradition of the Josen dynasty. Also this is a way to give a glimpse the foreign people of the Josen dynasty.

Han Bit Jang Then why not keep a member of the Royal House of Josen as a Monarch if it's so culturally significant to the South-Korean people, instead of playing make believe is my next question ? Democracy can go hand in hand with a Monarch quite well, it works in: The Kingdom of the Netherlands. (my country) The Kingdom of Belgium. The Kingdom of Sweden. The Kingdom of Norway. The Kingdom of Denmark. The Kingdom of Spain. The United Kingdom of Britain. The Principality of Monaco. The Principality of Andorra. The Principality of Liechtenstein. The Grant-Duchy of Luxembourg. And even to some degree in the City state/Principality/Kingdom of the Vatican. It seems to work in Asia too. The Empire of Japan. The Kingdom of Bhutan. The Kingdom of Cambodia. Oké not so much in the Kingdom of Thailand because of the internal politics, but the last King Bhumiubol Adulyadej wasn't at fault there it's the politicians and military. Not familiar how it's going in The Kingdom of Malaysia, but haven't heard anything really bad. And i believe there are 2 or 3 more Asian Kingdom's. This is just of the top of my head. I'm aware that the Middle-Eastern Monarchies aren't all too good with the exceptions of Kingdom of Jordan and the Kingdom of Morocco. The rest of the Middle-Eastern Kingdom's and Sultanate's aren't doing well.

ThatDutchguy well most of these are just a culture fest and the guards are volunteers. Also the total house of Josen are mostly gone, there are those who survived the occupation but the actual royal line are history.

@@rianaZeinF Well you are right as during the occupation, most of the noble princes married the Japanese imperial princess, thus making them traitors as Korea was liberated and gained their independence. I know from the history of pre-korean war, that any Korean collaborated with the Imperial Japanese government are no longer welcomed and are banished, even if they were forced to collaborate.
