Told my Doc ( pulmonologist) that my machine wasn't giving me enough pressure and was not helping. I asked if he could give me a range like my hubby had gotten from his therapist. This way I could get the added pressure when needed. He basically told me that I know nothing, the sleep study (done for only one night)came up with a number(9) for a reason and he will not change anything. I went home, looked up how to set a range of pressure and changed it to 9-12. Well the 30 day average is showing 10.5. I sleep so much better and don't feel like I am suffocating. Not once did I yank the mask off to "get air". I am done with this dr. This industry and how they do things needs much improvement. Glad you are open enough to see and admit that there are idiots out there. Thanks for your validation, and thanks for your help.

I ordered a DreamStation Go from an online CPAP store so that I could take it on an overseas trip. Pressure was supposed to be 6; but it arrived set at 10. I didn't know this until I tried the machine. Loved how quiet it was but and after 10 minutes, I felt like my lungs were going to explode. After watching your instructions several times, I quickly changed the pressure setting back to 6. THANK YOU. You saved me a lot of hassle...

I am really taken back by all of the frustration here! I started a company almost 20 years ago and am an RRT, as well as some of the other commenters. At my company, ALL of my CPAP patients are given my cell phone for any problems and can call it at any time. If they say a practitioner wanted a change of pressure, I would call the practitioner and arrange for it for the patient. I would NEVER leave the patient in a lurch!! There are some good providers out there who put the patient first! At my company, half of our meeting time is me explaining what sleep apnea is and how CPAP will help change their lives. I am always available for questions. I apologize for my colleagues out there who have obviously not been patient advocates! There is no excuse for treating patients that way!

Thank you so much. My doctor prescribed a fixed setting for my new Dreamstation Go Auto that was too high when my regular Dreamstation had auto high and low settings. I called the online retailer who sold me the unit, and they referred me to your videos to make my own adjustments. It was a breeze. I had visions of 50 phone calls to my doctor and sending the unit back to the retailer for adjustments. While I can’t afford the chandelier on Amazon, I’ll definitely consider making you my Amazon Smile charity!

After 2 years on CPAP my AHIs started to climb and began getting that crappy feeling. Watched your channel and switched my Dreamstation to Auto 8-10cm (from 8cm) after looking at my OSCAR data. AHIs went back down and immediately felt better. When I went in for my annual check in with the sleep doctor I told him what I did and he said (great!) if that’s working he’ll write that as my new prescription. I asked him about folks getting snippy with adjusting my own pressure he laughed and said that we’re not changing chemotherapy drugs here, just breathing. The ladies down at the equipment shop blew up my phone for a week insisting I bring in my machine after the prescription change, but eventually they stopped calling. Just hope they didn’t put me on some blacklist when it comes time for new parts.

Thank you so much! I've been moving a lot and have seen three different "sleep doctors" in the last 2 years. Because I've been moving I've had to start the process over every time and it never gets finished because it takes forever to get through each doctors monotonous and time consuming process. I'm sure this is just to increase their fees. Kaiser charged me over a thousand dollars to tell me what I already knew for just one appointment this last time. Luckily they gave me the revised pressure settings eventually but wanted to charge me another $2k to go through more appointments before they fixed what was wrong. Now I can do this myself. Thank you so much again!

I had two Dreamstations and a Dreamstation Go. It has taken three years, it seems, but they have replaced the two and finally the Go model. Of course they dragged their feet on the Go model because I have been using CPAP for twenty years and they kept telling me I had to provide my prescription. They finally sent me one set at 4-20 auto, which was impossible to use. Using your instruction I was able to set it to 10, which is where my other machines are set. Thank you! Incidentally, neither of my "desktop" machines showed foam deterioration, but the Go machine filter, which I used infrequently for travel, was loaded with black foam particles. I never used ozone or UV cleaners, so they definitely had a foam deterioration problem. I only wish the new Dreamstations were as small as the originals.

My husband was sent a dreamstation by the VA last week, no instructions. I have a good understanding of medical terminology, quickly pick up on how things work, what settings to watch for, etc., so I went to KZbin(I am not a nurse or anything, just grew up and been around medical equipment and Doctors a ton with my parents) Watched a few videos, and set his settings. He took to the cpap very well, and his ahi averaged .6-1, highest was 2.6 that first night when figuring out settings for him and mask fit. I noticed he has been having a harder time with it the last 2 nights, and tonight I saw his current pressure was higher than the max he had averaged the past week. Checked settings, and they were far different, and his ahi are also far higher! Noticed they were changed Monday morning. Just changed settings again, and turned off the modem on it, and now he is sleeping peacefully, and breathing well. Seriously he was making it 20 minutes before he'd take it off tonight, and slept half of last night with it off, until I changed settings back tonight. Now it's the longest stretch of sleep he's had since Sunday. I feel there is a big difference in the Doctor remotely changing things based on the data they see(especially since he kept taking it off), vs me laying next to him all night, able to adjust and find baselines, as he adjusts to a cpap overall. They were putting high minimum pressure(higher than what the machine would even automatically go to) and no ramp time, but seems a low pressure and medium ramp time works best so far. No wonder he kept taking it off the last 2 nights, and saying he felt worse than the first few nights on it! I'm used to being up all night with him, making him move and change position for the constant apnea spells, can't wait for this all to settle, so I can finally sleep again, too! It's been years!

Sounds like you've done that in the past - called a clinic and had them talk you through it. I'm actually surprised they told you and didn't make you go in. They think we're all idiots and we can't do it ourselves.

I’m so happy I found this channel! Your videos are hilarious but very informative. I’ve been on CPAP therapy for over 10 years & it’s been a struggle dealing with the sleep clinic in my area & the device suppliers. My pulmonologist is exactly the type you’re describing who thinks a patient can’t have any control over their own therapy. He’s very specific about what he’ll let you order & from what supplier. I’ve actually seen him threaten another medical practitioner (my family doctor) for writing a scrip allowing patients to order a new CPAP machine! It’s nuts. I don’t understand why they’ve made this so difficult to get the necessary supplies we need. And now that I’m replacing an older machine I’m having to jump thru the hoops again. I’m paying fully out of pocket for it which is fine by me due to the crazy high deductible. Unfortunately he’s who I’m stuck with & as a truck driver time isn’t on my side when I’m home to deal with too many pressing demands before work has me moving again. It sure would be nice if they would allow us more freedom to manage our own healthcare. By the way I’m buying the Dreamstation Go after having some very tense mouthy exchanges with the doctor. Like I said he’s a very protective fellow with his preferred brands & equipment. Anyway... subscribed & thanks👍🏼
@Freecpapadvice4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Sorry to hear that you're stuck with a "Richard" physician. Those micro managers drive me nuts. The Dreamstaion Go is extremely versatile. At home or on the road.... Nice choice. Thank you for subscribing. I also thank you for your work as a truck driver. Without you and your peers this country doesn't function.
@rjasonw744 жыл бұрын
And without people like you, my wife who’s an RN, BSN working in an ICU & other healthcare professionals nobody functions. So thank you as well! Side note its your product reviews that helped me settle on the DreamStation Go. I was pretty settled on wanting something portable that could go with me on the road 4 nights a week & back home without too many complications & this seemed to be the one for me. Your review helped solidify that in my mind. Arguing with the doc was just part of the process I’ve had to deal with for the last 10+ years so I expected it. The more involved explanations you gave on the ResMed AirMini - which he is a big fan of by the way - also made its limitations deal breakers for me. I especially don’t want to breathe thru a wet sock!

I ordered my Dreamstation go from online retailer. I used my PCP for the prescription and explained what my settings needed to be which he did write on the prescription. When I received my CPAP machine the settings were nowhere near what was on the prescription. Sure it was useable even though the pressure was 6 and it should have been 10 and it started with 30 minute ramp when I told them to turn the ramp feature off. My nights would have started with me starving for air had I not found your you tube video. I was able to adjust the air to 8 and shut off the ramp. Since it’s a auto CPAP, it immediately will adjust up to what I require. Thanks for your video!

Doc said it needed to be set with a slightly higher ceiling so I call the vendor to ask them how and they tell me it takes a prescription from the doc in order to tell me how to change my own settings on my own machine. Thanks man. This helps a lot!! This saved me lots of money and time. The fact that I can't monitor my own sleep settings drives me nuts. These machines can record all sleep parameters and can tell you if you are not sleeping well. And you will feel if you are not sleeping well. When I had my first sleep study, in a sleep lab, it was nuts. When I went for a second CPAP machine, the DR wanted a second sleep lab, I refused. They then said the CPAP machine could send my sleep data in with an adapter by cell phone! I slept with it for a week and they set the pressure remotely. All they wanted was my money. I have since bought a Dreamstation for travel and they wanted more money for setup. BS! Your video saved me a lot of money! Thanks!!

You saved me at least 2 more co-pays, at least 2 fifty mile drives to the medical offices and possibly 1 stroke from being pissed with the realization I have to go on my overseas trip carrying my regular sized CPAP in my back pack. The prescription had the wrong pressure on it because of the very lame testing process that got me my new prescription. When I went in to pick up my brand new " U PAY FOR HALF OF IT YOURSELF MACHINE" I noticed the pressure wrong due to the incorrect number on the prescription. It was going to be a major paperwork, sleep study and prescription ordeal to fix the error because the store has to abide by the prescription. The insurance system is toast and the durable equipment portion is really screwed up. Thanks man, Oh and by the way, I really AM TIRED of being spoken down to or not being taken seriously when I need help by the medical professionals.

Anyhow, at home I use a resmed AirSense 10 which I love. But the dreamstation go feels so different and i end up throwing it off during the night because I feel like I am suffocating about 2 hours into using the machine. If I take it off for about 30 minutes then put it back on, I can go another couple of hours. Wondering if there are some settings I can match up to the two machines. On both I use the resmed nasal pillow P10. Thanks for any advice you can lend. I really want to love this little guy.

When I stop breathing with my mouth open (brain communication or purposely) it doesn't force air into my lungs to keep me breathing. Thank you so much! I hate how everyone wants to hide this from the end-user. They should make the clinician menu accessible but not SO easy to get to that some idiot ends up accidentally changing his pressure setting(s). It's simple - if you don't know what you're doing, you DON'T go into the clinician menu. I bought a used Dreamstation GO and needed to set it for Auto 5 - 15 cm H2O. I saw this video & quickly got into that menu. It was in CPAP mode (at whatever pressure - can't remember). Thanks to you, it's Auto 5-15 now. So 41 ppl disliked. That's your offended count so far.

I read what I wrote again. I think I should explain, I am AGAINST it being a hidden menu. What I meant is don't make it so easy that some idiot would accidentally access it. Maybe have a warning pop up and you have to tap 'yes' to continue.

Hello, I am a prescriber and work, among other dx, with sleep. Thanks, Quigley MacNurple of Loch Purple, may your pillow be moist from vent juices for talking to innocent people and making them engage in pressure - crime. But, to all your critics, those who have the knowhow that this can be done and fund this video should get their own opportunity at screwing it up, though I doubt they will actually do that. Like for me, a new CPAP arrives in the mail, I plug it in only to see the settings are off, despite my colleague's gorgeous handwriting, and I do not feel like waking him on a Sunday night. This video came in handy. I have also had one patient, a sweet 80some grandma, tell me in her cute french accent how she hacked her cpap by watching KZbin because the wait time to see my kind can be months in our neck of the woods.

Why do you have to degrade Respiratory Therapists the way you do? I work in a DME with both Sleep Techs and RTs and we uphold each other with respect. I agree that patients can do whatever they want in changing their own pressure, we just can’t do it for them without a script from their physician. To call us as a profession stupid is ridiculous. We all try to help our patients, no need for the name calling...just sayin

Ummm........it's because I'm clearly joking. One of my closest friends is an RRT and we jokingly talk crap on each other all the time. Now I need you to finger wag all the people that talk crap on me in my comments section because you are in "white knight" mode.....just sayin.

Hahaha I don't need to go to doctor or those bloodsucker just to set a bit of my machines

You should encourage patients to follow up with their sleep specialist, not play around with their pressure. There is much more to cpap compliance than getting the pressure right. Why don’t you tell pilots to tinker with their plane carburetors?
@Freecpapadvice3 жыл бұрын
Because I don’t know anything about carburetors.
@luisurbina51153 жыл бұрын
@@Freecpapadvice otherwise you would make recommendations? You are reckless if you think you know sleep medicine just because you know how to change the pressure in a machine. Ever heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect?

The fact that I need an Rx, have to be forced to go through a DME and have someone with barely a HS diploma educate me on how to turn on a CPAP is an insult. Never mind the fact that Cigna says that a travel unit is "NOT MEDICALLY NECESSARY" vs a home model (even though they cost the same). Double the insult from Cigna that I would be paying out of pocket for it 100% since I barely met my deductible so far. It's crap like this that has ruined our medical system.

Yeah, I just purchased a DreamStation Go out of pocket through the internet, because my insurance company said that a travel sized machine is a "luxury". I was like, wait a minute, a travel sized machine is actually LESS EXPENSIVE than a regular machine, so WHY would the insurance company not want to save themselves a few hundred dollars?! It doesn't make sense to me. The whole experience has been a real headache. Thank goodness I know how to set my own device. Excited to try out my DreamStation Go for the first time tonight, with my WISP mask that I love!
