Beyond the usual questions I ask of all Nurse Practitioners who come on the show, Adam offers great insight into why, when, and how to change specialties. He was a great trauma nurse practitioner and is transitioning beautifully into the world of vascular surgery. He shares a glimpse into his role as an NP with the team and how he obtained his RNFA.
My favorite resources:
If you need to purchase any of these products I am greatly appreciative if you use my links which offer a small commission and cost you nothing additional. Thank you for supporting my channel
The Ultimate H&P Cheatsheet: www.breenp.com/
(A copy of the 12 most common ICU problems with associated dot phrases to copy into your EMR with explanations for each problem. This is how you become efficient at note writing. It changed my life, literally started going home on time once I used these)
The ICU Book by Paul Marino amzn.to/3jbh2vn
(A must have. Easy to read, literally cover to cover. Also a life-long reference. Particularly helpful when the nurse calls you for tachycardia - simply flip to that page, it gives you actionable sequence of events with a little bit of pathophys)
The Ventilator Book amzn.to/2UvENE0
(A must have)
Essentials of Mechanical Ventilation amzn.to/3jiOXCi
(Deeper understanding, does a good job describing the mechanics and also I love how they break down waveforms)
Mometrix test bank for AGACNP review amzn.to/35XkUrO
Barkley Board review amzn.to/3xSCObb
(Get this before you start school and use it to study as you go along in your course - trust me it makes all the difference in the world when it comes to preparation post graduation)

I cannot wait to move on from trucking and pursue my first passion of nursing. Though I feel a bit hopeless, and that it’s unattainable for me, I am trying to maintain a positive mindset. Thanks for your videos they are inspiring.

Awe Hi Reg! There is ALWAYS hope!!! Don’t get overwhelmed. Break it down into steps and just get started. We need more nurses and I’m sure you’d be an asset!

Once more, another great interview showing the versatility of the Acute care NP. I appreciated hearing about obtaining an RNFA since I’ve been toying with the idea. Starting clinicals as an AGACNP student in January. Preparing to be on my A-game for it. Your videos are encouraging to me. Thank you.

Thank you for the video! I am a current OR nurse- is it probable that I can go into a specialty like cardiology as an acnp with only OR experience?

I think you’ll find many schools will want you to have more time spent in building a foundation of medical care. Surgical services, as you know, is a completely different animal. Also, you’ll find getting through school, boards, and your onboarding will be more challenging. Is it possible, yes. There are plenty of schools who will take anyone and pass you with little care that you understand the concepts. Boards and practice IRL is a different story. As a blanket statement, I wouldn’t recommend it. You’ll add a huge amount of stress into your life and I’ve met some NPs who had such a bad experience they left the field altogether bc of it. Set yourself up for success!
