I love listening to someone else talk about growing and changing as an artist, because I don’t hear much about it often and I definitely experience the allure of art different than my typical style and subjects too.

I can relate so much. I've been trying to develop a cute/kawaii/illustrative style, but I've become more excited by semi-realism and I'm finding it's easier for me to do than the cuter styles even though I love the cute aesthetic. I do enjoy experimentation, so trying different styles is fun, but it bugs me to have so many styles in one sketchbook. It's hard to have a consistent style in my sketchbook when I'm experimenting so much. 😊

Oh and "feeling less creative because one used to make art from a place of pain and now the pain is gone" is a really heavy and relevant topic concerning artist health. So glad to hear you are safely navigating that!!!
@dianab24282 жыл бұрын
definitely relatable to hear someone talk about leaving an art medium you used to love. I used watercolors for most of my art journey and last year really got into acrylics, and now i'm doing a lot of inking stuff with pens. I just started using watercolors again, and i missed them a lot, but trying new stuff is great (and important). There is certainly a fear among artists on social media when your interests start shifting, because we think people started following you for a certain type of art, and now you just don't gravitate towards it as much, what will they think? But it's all part of the process, it's completely natural to want to try new things and challenge yourself, and i think people do love seeing that evolution.

Also about tastes changing, when i was 16 or ao i was obsessed with dip pens, and at the time brush pens were the trendy go-to online and i remember hating them (despite not trying them?) at the time. Now i barely use dip pen. Another thing is in my previous sketchbooks i got into alcohol markers and fell in love. I got canson the wall paper and was bookbinding sketchbooks with it and everything but now i'm in a sketchbook that's just black ink and black brush pens which is this big contrast. I wanted to do a plain sketchbook because i was getting too perfectionisty over my previous sketchbooks.

I love drawing straight in brush pen without sketching in pencil. It definitely improved my lineart and literally at any given opportunity i always recommend people to try it out for a bit vecause its a good way to warm up. I like collecting brush pens and i like zebra sign, kuretake, pentel, faber catell and tombow

This was so interesting to listen to and, really fascinating watching you draw in pen with no pencil sketch underneath! So bold 😮😮

I love that you're just following that inspiration wherever it takes you (the example of the knight painting vs these pen sketches is so relatable as someone who doesn't feel like they have a "style" or theme to their art at all). Your sketchless sketches are amazing btw, I'm so inspired!

I totally get what you mean about artists drawing in similar trendy styles. That might just have to do with what’s trending in publishing/selling right now because a lot of clients want very specific ‘looks’ and it kinda forces artists to try to adopt that style to keep up. Which isn’t the worst if your style is growing and changing anyway but it does make things look the same which is unfortunate. I’m kind of in a similar place where I know what I like to draw and I’m building my portfolio but a lot of the feedback is ‘can’t you draw in this cuter style right now’ and even though I love it and I follow a ton of artists with that kind of style, it’s not what I’m good at
@Lilstarnerd2 жыл бұрын
i didn't even think of how that kind of thing would influence art publishing!! that must really suck to HAVE to adhere to trends in order to get business, i'm sorry!!

@@Lilstarnerd it’s been weird because I’m definitely new to the industry and I haven’t been able to get into publishing just yet so idk if I should wait for trends to pass or try something different. And don’t apologize! The video really put the thought into words honestly

Def recommend checking out Jetpens or Yoseka Stationery for finding the Pentel pens. They come in more than 15 colors and release new ones every year. They're typically used for calligraphy so a Stationery shop would have them (and other fun pens!)

Still relate so much :') loved this video I would also love to hear a bit more about your experience with socializing (outside of art), because you've mentioned having had some trouble with that in previous videos too, and I think it's a subject that would also deserve some attention!

Totally agree! I am as reclusive as can be. I have social anxiety but not in the way people would think. I have a progressive medical illness that causes severe chronic pain and severe chronic fatigue syndrome. The anxiety comes from rushes of adrenaline and norepinephrine from Addison's Disease which is adrenal insufficiency and the symptoms of that are blinding anxiety attacks. Not psychological but medical. It's why I picked up art about a year and a half ago. I don't even like to answer the phone. I have no friends which is really a good thing on a normal day to day basis but when I do need someone it makes it hard. So yes I am really on board if you decide you're able to be that open to make a video about that!

The most i let myself copy is one element. say i liked the color pallet they used. so ill do my own drawing in the same colors. or i liked how they did the background. and ill try doing a similar background to my next piece. like what im stealing from you here, is im gonna try the sticky note thing. where you cover up and try again. also the navy blue pen with gold yellow marker is gorgeous combo.

I think something is wrong with my hand-eye coordination. I've been practicing for years, but I still get horrible skewing and terrible perspective, especially when I draw with media that can't be erased. It drives me crazy.

Are they the Pentel Touch pens you guys are talking about? Do they say "Touch" on the side of them? I know it might be a dumb question but I'm struggling to figure out what pens she's talking about.

Do you have a place or digital platform where some of the art supplies you use often are stored? I LOVE the markers that you used for blocks of color in the background and would like to know what brand they are you where you got it if possible. 😊

I too, would like to know this style she's referring to. Is it that Cal-Arts style or another style?
@jakerivera72262 жыл бұрын
@@CoffeeMugTwentyFive I believe they are referring to the highly illustrative style that’s popular among many artists on social media. Ie; simplified characters, strong colours and exaggeration of shapes. It’s less focussed on realism and looks more storybook like or cute like mel mentioned. Examples off the top of my head = AppleCheeks, Leigh ellexon ( sorry can’t write her name).

I am just in awe by how you did those sketches with those pens. Were you looking at reference images? And, if you were, to draw them without any structural lines (like basic shapes) is just amazing to me. I also love that you are loving those pens, btw. It's always a great thing to find a new art supply or even a supply you have always had but just never fell in love with up until this point. I used to have those paper mate pens for my planner back in high school and college. I still have some. Never considered sketching with them until now! Haha. Thanks for possibly introducing me to a new way of sketching. ☺ I couldn't draw along with you right now, unfortunately, but I hope to later! Still watched the video all the way through and was super happy I did. Thanks for sharing it with us!

@@Lilstarnerd Are the the Pentel Touch pens? Do they say Touch on the side? I'm sorry, maybe that's a dumb question but I have pens that seem to be exactly like the ones you're using and I want to be sure I'm using the right ones. I'm so lost lately when it comes to making art. I just feel like I have no source of inspiration anymore, I used to love looking at other people's art but it all looks mostly boring to me now. I used to have style aspirations or media that I want to make fanart for, or my own characters I loved to paint. Now I see nothing around me that makes me want to create + my own art looks bland and awful to me. It's like all the creative force and fun in creating has been sucked out of my body and I have been struggling for almost 2 years now. Like the urge is there but I am in a bad spot mentally and nothing I make brings me joy. Maybe someone else has experienced this and can help me out 😟
@Lilstarnerd2 жыл бұрын
i'm so sorry to hear that!! i hope you get the help you need with your mental health. i totally understand the struggle with unwanted distance from art. maybe it's time to take a step back and move in another direction to help foster that creativity, like trying something totally new or going in with no expectations, something to help rebuild your relationship with art without the expectations of what once was!
