Some other guy posted a video where he instructed people to remove the roll cage, unbolt the engine, remove throttle cables, take off the exhaust, and more… so I commented on his video with the info below and directed him to your video. You do NOT need to remove the cage, unbolt your engine, remove cables, remove your exhaust, etc! Take the rear plastics off and all the plastics under and behind the seat. You can simply remove the clutch cover bolts at that point. On the secondary, pull the sheave outward toward you and the belt will get a ton of slack in it. Next, using a strap wrench on the outer primary sheave, break the nut loose (it may take an impact the very first time)… it’s normal thread. The belt will easily slip off. Make sure the lettering on the new belt is in the direction where you can read it from the front of the vehicle looking toward the rear of the vehicle. Reassemble is just in reverse, and the primary clutch nut needs to be torqued to 29 ft lb, again using the strap wrench to hold it still.

I appreciate you sharing the video. Hopefully between your comment & the video link we can help someone from not removing an engine to change a belt.

Ha, I just watched that one...I was like DUDE WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? I am in the process of changing the belt on a 170 I just bought for my daughter a couple days ago rand just last night got the clutch cover taken off...it's a paint in the neck but you don't need to take the whole dang thing apart like that guy was doing! Anyway now just waiting on the belt. Went with a Gates g-force...am hoping it'll fix the herky-jerky crap at low speed and on deceleration.

Let us know how the g-force does. I ended up going with factory but I’m interested to hear if that fixes your issue.

@@trailkings will do! I got a smoking deal on the buggy because it wouldn’t turn over and the jerky issue…replaced the starter relay and it starts right up…if the new belt solves the other issue I’ll be stoked. I’ll let you know how it goes.

My secondary is stuck on my kids rzr170, any ideas to get it off. Tried kroil, a giant screw driver, then a pry bar, with an impact and it won’t budge. Tried hard taps with a 3lb mall as well.

I just bought a 2017 170 , guy said it needed a starter, solenoid was clicking so I bought new starter and solenoid and still clicking, getting 12.4 volts to starter, does this mean engine is locked up and it’s trash? Is there a way to turn motor by hand to check?

Have you ever had to change the stator in the 170?

I just bought a used 2019 rzr 170. Its in really nice shape , looks new. Ive never driven a belt clutch system just honda and yamaha. Is it normal to be a bit jerky at the start? it revs a bit and then theres a sudden grab/engagement and then off it goes . In reverse , kinda the same thing but engages even more suddenly/grabbily? I think this is normal but in your experience ,is it?

Jerky is a sign of a worn belt or worn clutches. Clutches aren’t that expensive, so it might be worth changing everything out at once. I would suggest at least installing a new belt.
