I've had a Polaris side by side since 2008 (of course various models) and the information Polaris has provided on belt management in this video is the most helpful thing Polaris has done for their customers! Most of these things I picked up on the rzr forum in the early years of ownership and hold true today. And to those thinking that it is impossible to have a belt look like that after a few thousand miles, it is not. Belt management is how that is achieved. Oh....and I have never install one of those belt temp gauges either! The other thing not mentioned here is blowing out the clutches regularly after a ride. I blow mine out with compressed air after every ride and pull the clutches for inspection1/year.

Best thing I did on my XP1000, was a razorback IR belt temperature gauge. I run dunes with paddles and if I see a spike above normal, I can back off and cool things down. One thing you didn't mention is the importance of clutch alignment! Hard hits can move the transmission in regards to the engine, and then belts will keep blowing.

Great tips. Im still on my original belt in my 04 700 Sportsman 😂. Dont use it much tho. Got over 1000 miles on my 21 Ranger 570 fullsize used for hauling and snow plowing on 29.5”s. Looking after your belt is crucial. Thanks for the tips 😊

Not sure if it was mentioned, make sure the primary and secondary clutches are aligned. On the Pro XP the secondary clutch has shims to adjust alignment, makes it very easy.

The low throttle thing is the reason we got a Pioneer 700 for the farm, specifically because of the torque converter automatic. My dad spends his whole day spraying or whatever, just at walking speed or below, stopping and starting, in the hills. Also, following the tractor through the woods, clearing trails.

Hey Polaris, maybe make a video on towing a trailer with a load using an ATV and SXS. I use my Sportsman 500 mostly for firewood cutting and I use a 4x6ft trailer to haul it out of the forest. When the trailer is empty I use 2hi to get me to the cutting site fast, and when hauling out a load I'll be in 2low and never go faster than 15mph. My trailer when its loaded will be right around a 1000lbs when the wood is green. I have never worn out a belt using my machine and also use it for plowing snow in winter, again in 4low and never faster than 15mph.

On your chart I had the second image and I didn’t know what it was, I got line used and was doing that since I got it, was soooo bad that I thought was the main shaft bearing broke, it would jerk hard taking off over time gave me a code for miss fire but only would do it if I hold the gas pedal for long (1 full min) at more then 3800 rpm I changed fuel pump, fuel injectors, and spark plugs and kept doing the same, so I was just using it going pressing gas and let go pressing gas and let go so it wouldn’t pick up the code again until my belt actually broke off last trip installed new belt, no more jerking at take off no more weird noises no more codes I can go full throttle as much as I want, something sooooo simple I didn’t know could give u so many problems

Yah. Yamahas have wet clutches so it’s a completely different ball game. Replacing the wet clutch isn’t fun though, a lot easier to change a belt.

Another Polaris mechanic said to NOT idle because the belt is just sitting loose on the pulley as the engine spins. I think most of these “never” scenarios, are based more in opinion than research.

Excellent video but as a newbie Im trying to learn alot of this information in a short period of time. So in the CVT belt driven transmission does the belt spin on the primary and secondary clutches ONLY when you step on the accelerator pedal? Thats the major point I was able to learn which would explain why you should let your machine idle for a few minutes to dissipate the heat on the belt and clutches. Hopefully my assumption is correct.

How about letting the machine idle while in gear. Like for a short time when stopping on the trail to talk. will that cause hour glassing?
