Would someone with knowledge please tell me who the soldier marching immediately behind the band is at about 7:37 minutes into the video. Also what is he carrying? Sometimes bands have this chap and sometimes not.
@louislungbubble6 жыл бұрын
that soldier is from the corps of drums , he carries the casing for the colours that is removed and replaced before and after the colours are paraded .
@alejandropina96066 жыл бұрын
He also carries the cover for the colour in case it rains during the changing of the guard.

I am very grateful for both illuminating replies to my query. I figured he was a drummer but assumed he was connected with the band not the guard. I suppose drummers were part of HQ as communications. At the risk of being impertinent, I have two more puzzles. Firstly, why does the old guard emerge from the palace at a slow march before breaking into quick time? Secondly, when emerging with the colour, two soldiers rush forward from the rear ranks too take up position guarding the colour. Why do they not emerge already in that position? I would appreciate your expert knowledge. I ask as an ignorant father with a kid in the forces and a need to be less ignorant.

lindsayolh the last I knew the corps of drums provide the mortar or machine gun platoon in their combat role nowadays, possibly also the HQ defense platoon . in the 18th and 19th century the drums were used for battlefield signaling but were always close at hand to the colours in order to beat an alert signal if the colours were under threat of attack. you can still hear this today ,when colours are taken off parade they do so at the double and the "points of war" are played , you can hear it as a brief and rapid tune always played with urgency , I believe this is a throw back from that alert signal. when they call "out the escort' and the two guardsmen run out to the colours , as far as I know it symbolizes that the colours need protection when passing from the barracks or forecourt out into the public streets. when they arrive back to barracks the two escorts just fall out back to the ranks as they reach the gates . the regimental slow march played as they leave Buckingham palace, not entirely sure where this originated from, might be to allow the new guard to pay compliments ( present arms ) as they depart. I think we will have some other contributors who can tell us more.
