Sorry for the late response. This is due to the fact the band counter march while at Windsor Castle so everyone who was on the right too the Castle is now on the left when returning too the Barracks Vice versa.

It seems they keep altering the march, many of the trills and accented percussion (harder stuff overall) have been removed

It depends. A lot of the bands have different styles to be apart from other bands.

Our Directors are required to march within the ranks as they play no role during the drill segment of a ceremony (The Drum Major is at the front and responsible for drill and leading the band). Although some bands do it differently and put the officer at the front, behind or to the side. If you asked me, as long as you are not commanding a body of men you should be within the ranks like everyone else ;)

Chromium Photography if you mean the soldiers behind the band, no they aren't allowed to break ranks (formation). They aren't there to protect the band, they're there to guard the Queen. In the case there's a person trying to cause harm, the police will remove them. Hopes this helps!

Why don't they just leave the band at the barracks and just take the trombones and bass drum since that all you can hear.
