I was running Honda GN4 oil in my 2008 Goldwing. Then I watched this video and decided to try Motul synthetic (and prime the filter, of course). I can't belive how much smoother it shifts gears now. It's a stark difference. As always, Paul's advice is spot on!

You should use GN4 instead of full synthetic oil. Honda motorcycle use not fully synthetic because of the motorcycle clutch. Full synthetic oil make the clutch slip. It’s not good. It’s slipper not smoother

@@DungNguyen-fj2wp That's true for some bikes with some oils, but not for this oil with the GL1800. I have been using it for more than a year and the clutch is not slipping. I've been riding motorcycles for almost 50 years and I know the difference between smooth gear shifting and a slipping clutch.

Hi Doug. We’ve been really busy with the business and all. Priming the filters is something I learned a long time ago from and old diesel mechanic. When I was a tech with GM I did it as well and you’d never here the lifters when I did it but the ones who didn’t do it you could hear the knocking upon start up. Did the same as a Honda tech and everyone adapted the same rule. We’ll end back doing videos soon. We’ve been gone to long. Ride safe my friend.

Excellent video Paul, precise and to the point. I just bought a 2008 Goldwing and doing some research I was glad to run into your video because another one advised to remove the fog light cowling and also a secondary cowling to access the oil filter. I thought to myself, "well, that's kind of a pain". Now I see you don't have to do that so the process (as you explained it) is now a piece of cake. I have always primed my oil filters, it just seems like a common sense thing to do so.

Awesome video. I had to laugh when you talked about putting the dielectric grease in the grommet holes and you said "otherwise, you will be going down the road with your feet on your highway pegs and the cover may blow right off". That is EXACTLY what happened to me this morning on my way back from San Antonio. And it is because I removed the cover last week and when I put it back on, I probably pushed the grommet rings right out. Really good wisdom in your video. Great teaching style and I love how you don't get bogged down on one thing too long. Great teachers, both of you! Thanks again.

Very thorough! Thank you! Great tip on lubing the side cover grommets. A lot of Honda dealers don't know to do this, and indeed on my 2001, I lost the right side panel about 20 miles after an oil change, and when I examined the situation, both lower and rear grommets were missing, just like you said!

Thanks Paul & Kathy for another very helpful video! BTW Paul, I just bit the bullet and became a Goldwing owner, well an F6B owner at any rate. Got myself a gently used 2014 F6B in black with ABS, no cruise control on the 2014 sadly but I'll probably invest in a Brakeaway throttle lock at some point. I was on the verge of buying a used BMW K1600GTL but the fear of potential high cost of ownership in the future plus the bike feeling super top-heavy to me, the F6B ticked most of the boxes so I went for it. I'm 58 now, so it will likely be my last bike. I bought the bike from a guy in Fredericton and riding the F6B back home (2 hour's ride) reassured me that I made the right choice in picking this bike, unbelievably smooth and powerful and oh so comfortable! My wife is going to love riding on the back! Your videos helped me really consider a GW too, so thanks for that! Happy riding and be safe out there.

My dad taught me to always prime oil filters when he was teaching me how to work on cars back in 1975 and after. I've always done it and I think it really just makes a lot of sense! I think the visual of showing people just how much oil is required to prime it was a fantastic idea as well! I also really like the idea of greasing the rubber when you mounted the side panels. Again, it just makes so much sense to do that to keep them from drying out and causing other problems as a result! I just changed the oil in my GW yesterday, but I used the Honda oil. I think next time I'll give the synthetic a try and see how it compares.

Following up. After being inspired by your video to do my own Oil and Filter change on my new Gold Wing, I actually did it and was so pleased with the sense of accomplishment that I changed the oil and filter on two other bikes. I had a couple minor messes (slippery oil filter dropping into the oil drain pan) but don't think I got more than a tablespoon of oil on the floor. Some Brakleen and paper towels and the floor is spotless again. Just purchased the oil change kit to complete the oil change on my fourth (and last) bike. Thanks for the video on your Gold Wing oil change. You made it look so straightforward and do-able that it gave me the confidence to give it a go. Also, your tip about not having to remove the lower front cover was right on and saved me time and hassle. Thanks, again!

I live on a highway and we see many motorcycles, mostly noisy Harley's but also see Honda Goldwings and let me tell you i would rather have the Honda's any day over them Harley's. I don't know how these people that ride these freaking Harley's can stand all that noise and listen to their radio's. I myself would prefer to ride anything with less noise the better. I appreciate the tech tip with the grommets Paul. I have been going top to bottom through my new to me 08 and went ahead and replaced them all. I also used dialectic grease as you suggest. The two oblong grommets were dry rotted. One of the oval grommets was actually missing. All of them are new now. Thanks again!

gday mate my father showed me to do that with filters in 1976 and ive done it on every single oil change on any car/bike ect i believe that like you it will eventually cause wear to parts waiting to get that oil .

I was taught to do that by an old diesel heavy equipment mechanic many years ago. I’ve always done it since. Every second counts when an engine needs oil and priming the filter gives it a fighting chance. Keep well and thanks for watching.

@@crispernator we have a new full size Ford Bronco. It’s a twin turbo 2.7 and I just did the first oil change on it. It has a cartage type oil filter so no priming it but when I did the oil change and before I started it I applied the brake and went full throttle on it to stop the injectors for opening and cranked the engine over to prime the filter. If you want to help out your engine and keep it purring you need to get all the tricks required to make it happen. I’m always wanting to learn more and I’m an old dog 😉

Good tip to pre-fill the filter, at least pre-soak the paper element. Another fussy, detail bit would be to make sure to warm the engine for 3-5 minutes like the manual specifies to warm and expand the oil. Filling to the dipstick mark with the bulk oil temperature cold overfills the sump. Probably doesn't hurt the engine to overfill a bit. Pouring in all 4 litres gets you pretty close + or -. Small overfill would only diminish mileage and power a bit from extra windage losses in the sump.

I own a 1999 Valkyrie 1500, same engine basically. I am in the process of hunting a 1800 Goldwing. This is basically the same, the oil fill is in exactly the same place, but the oil drain and the oil filter are not. Great info. Seems pretty basic to me on the grommets, I have always lubed them with silicone grease for all the same reasons you mentioned, easy on/off and to keep them from drying out. Nice video.

Not cheap. You’d think as a Honda dealer they would have a flat rate for that service. Do your own. It’s easy. Don’t forget to Prefill the oil filter. Your motor will love you for it.

Great video. Up here in the north, where bikes are stored for five months at a time, I also think it's important to always put the bike away with fresh oil in it....never dirty oil. Metal doesn't like acids which have formed in dirty oil. My 2003 has stayed like new and I do think the engine appreciates clean oil during storage

I have a 2003 Honda Shadow VT750CD ACE, that I bought used from a gentlemen that I worked with out at McGuire AFB, NJ., and I learned something new by watching this video about changing the filter by pre-charging, I definitely will be doing that as well as using a lubricant on the grommets of my side covers. Nice Video, very informative! I have just one critique. According to the engine manufacturer the correct way to check the oil is with the dipstick screwed all the way in to get a really accurate reading!

Great video for detailed instruction; however, when checking the oil level the engine oil is supposed to be done with a warmed up engine. For me that means when the coolant gauge is at normal operating temperature. After oil change, if you fill up the oil pan to dip stick full on a cooled down engine, I guarantee dip stick will read overfull once normal operating temp is reached. I leave the last oil top off until I start engine and let it warm up to operating temp once more and then wait 5 minutes to let all oil sink down to pan. By then the small amount of top off oil has little effect due to rest of oil being hot already. Saying that I always watch Paul Short's video prior to changing oil as a refresher (I'm 65) to make sure I cover all the bases. Thank you Paul.

I’ve been doing oil changes for a very long time and I’ve never had a higher than normal oil level the way I showed it here. I was also a Honda motorcycle tech in a dealership for three years and it was always that way. This is exactly why we don’t do safety videos or mechanical videos anymore. @@7863348 The coefficient of expansion of motor oil is 0.00039 per degree F. If you took one gallon of motor oil at 70 F and heated it to 220 F, the temp rise is 150 degrees F. Multiply 150 by 0.00039 and add that to 1. That 1 gallon would now be 1.06 gallons.

I am sure you did it but I did not see you do it. wipe down the oil filter fitting on the motor. Making sure no road grime gets between the engine block & the filter. Good video.
