Keith, great video! I really enjoy your videos. You do a great job explaining things. I just hit 600 miles on my 2016 Super Tenere that I purchased late last season. This video came in handy as I was changing the oil for the first time yesterday. At the end of the video you say that 4.4 quarts is specified in the owner’s manual. My 2016 manual states 3.4 quarts for an oil and filter change, and 3.1 quarts when only changing the oil. The 3.4 quarts was accurate for me. Oddly enough the owner’s manual recommends the oil be changed every 4,000 miles, and the filter (and oil) only every 8,000 miles. So every other oil change we simply need to drain the oil and refill.

Hi Matt, thanks for catching that error for me. I don't know where the 4.4 quarts came from. I re-checked the manual. My 2014 one said 3.6 quarts for oil and filter and 3.3 for not changing the filter. I've found I tend to overfill it so I will try the 3.4 quarts.

It looked as if you got just as much oil on you as you got in the oil pan! 😆 I’ve had the problem with overfilling from the dealer, it can really cause a mess. Best to keep it on the lower end of the view glass. Thanks, easy enough to do on your own.

Shouldn't you put oil on the gasket on the new oil filter before you install it? If you did, you didn't show/mention it. An old habit from doing oil changes on cars. I have never done an oil chang without rubbing some oil on the new gasket. Used oil works fine for this purpose. I also check to make sure the gasket from the old oil filter didn't stay with the motor. It happens some times. Its easy to see on the Tenere. Never had a leak from the filter.That may be why the automotive filter had a slow leak. Just a thought.

thanks Christopher. I forgot to mention that I do always put used oil on the gasket of the new filter. Trick I learned 30+ years ago. I guess it's so ingrained that I didn't think to mention it. I do also check to see that that old gasket came off the oil filter too. (had that problem once too) Thanks for mentioning those tips!

Great video, one major problem. The part where you talk about the oil. I read the owners manual days before I changed the oil and filter at 600 miles for the first time. As I was changing it, I didn't remember how much oil to put back. That what brought me to your video. I filled the bike with 4 quarts. When I looked at the sight glass, it was entirely covered. So I went to check my manual. The short of it is its 3.4 Quarts NOT 4.4 quarts. Some Idiot my not be smart enough to realize and cause major damage, as that is the very point that you stressed just after your error. Maybe you can edit the video or something. Also, the skid plate does not need to be removed. Besides that, great job

The oil goes into a tank not the sump. There is no damaging the engine from overfilling

I never change the copper washer! I've kept the same washer on my Yamaha XT250 dual-sport bike through 5 or 6 oil changes over 2 years and never had a leak. However, I wiggle the washer around as I tighten the drain bolt so it drops into the same depression made from a previous crushing.

I do the same thing. I have a Scion car that I've changed the oil dozens of times over the year. I just flip the washer when I re-install the drain plug and it's been fine.

Where do you get your rotella T oil>. I have used the Fram Oil filter for years and they have worked well. They are reasonably priced too.

I usually just get it from AutoZone or Walmart or Target. I used to use Fram filters until about 10 years ago. I read some reviews that said they weren't as well made so I use primarily Mobil-1 or Bosch filters.

Keith, I just recently bought a 2012 XT1200. While riding I noticed that the speed reading on the GPS and the Speedo do not match. I have determined that the speedo Is off about 4-6MPH. Is there a way for me to recalibrate, or is that a dealer task? Thoughts?

I have seen electronic devices that plug into the bike that change the speedo calibration. I believe you have to program the machine to tell it what percentage you want the speedo to be modified. I've seen them with Yamaha WR vendors. My 2015 Tenere is only about 1-2 mph off, it's the closest one I've ever seen. Other bikes I've had have been off by 10%. I just keep a mental note of what the real speed is, but getting a calibrator would be a perfect fix. I don't have the names of any products, just that I've seen them.

You should use motorcycle-specific oil, not car oil. The reason is, modern car oils have additives to reduce friction to improve gas mileage, and this works against the friction needed for the clutch to grab of course. Maybe you didn't have problems because you don't work the clutch very hard? Look at your owner's manual. Mine for a 2019 XT250 says "...do not use oils labelled ENERGY CONSERVING II or higher." It also specifies "JASO standard MA".

It states in 2022 Yamaha manual to not use diesel or automotive oils, only motorcycle. Rotella is a diesel oil.

I was wondering what people’s thoughts were with the oil drain plugs on a angle? Was it designed to be drained on the side stand? I have only ever drained oil on a motorcycle with it perpendicular to the ground! On a center stand or with a wheel clamped in a lift.

Hi Stephen, actually it has addressed the leak. No leak now, more than a week later. I'm not sure if the Bosch automotive filter got hit by a rock and leaked, or what? The Bosch filter sticks out further and is closer to the tire. I did keep the Bosch filter tight and rechecked it. I'm still not 100% sure why it leaked, but the leak is gone.

Not the OP, but was using this video today to do my first oil change on my new to me 2015 Tenere. I've used Rotella at one point or another on the dozen or so bikes I've owned. The T6 15-W40 seems to get good reviews on the Super Tenere forums by a few of the inmates over there that have high mileage bikes. It's also JASO MA/MA-2 rated- says so right on the bottle and you can google it and pull up the info on Shell's site - that nullifies the concerns a few other commenters have said about "it's not motorcycle oil". YMMV, but I've been happy with the variations of Rotella I've run in my past bikes- I used the white bottle /basic stuff in my KLR's and smaller singles with no issues - those bikes tend to break down oil a bit quicker, so changing with rotella is easier on the wallet - the KLR's ran better on that then the couple times I tried "motorcycle oil". My fuel injected bikes (and my concours) got a steady diet of T5 (rotella semi synthetic) or bel ray if they were at the dealer. T6 seems to get good reviews from a fair portion of other S10 owners, and it's reasonably inexpensive and easy to find, so that's what I'll run in mine. Plus you can buy the gallon "jug" and one of those gets you an oil change with less than a half a quart left over. 3.6 quarts appears to be the magic # for refill, changed on the side stand.

I've heard it said many times that the Super Tenere is low maintenance; however, the US owner's manual specifies a 4000-mile interval for oil changes, among other things. That's too frequent for me to call low maintenance. I know it can go longer than that because Australian owners are given a 6000-mile interval. What interval have you settled on?

I agree with you Mark. I think the manufacturer's are too conservative when it comes to maintenance intervals. I go 5,000 miles between oil changes, unless the bike sits a lot and then I'll do it once a season.

My '12 would need 1/2 a quart at 4000 miles so I always just changed it. Just changed oil on the '14 at 3500 miles and it looked a little used. Riding 1500 miles this week so new oil seems like a good idea

You really need to rock the bike to the right as far as you can and back to kickstand. Another cup will come out. Im surprised you didn't correct the video. The 4.4 quarts is all wrong.

greetings to Munich, thanks for the comment. The owners manual says 3.4 liters of oil if you are also changing the oil filter. When I change the oil I add a little at a time and then just enough to get close to the top of the line in the window. It's very easy to overfill.

Surprised there is nothing to protect the filter from damage. I’d want a engine guard that covered that, particularly since the guard has to come off for the change anyway.

I haven't had any issues with damage to the filter. Many Tenere riders put on a full skid plate, but I have kept the stock plastic one. I do a lot of gravel roads and have never had an issue with damage. It's easy to remove the stock skid plate...I image a full ADV skid plate would be a PITA to remove.

Thanks for the video I did 10K Miles on my 2016 ST and noticed that it never remind me to change the oil / service like my previous BMW... I check the Maintenance menu and I never reset it to "0" but I'm guessing if I don't enter into that menu will never remind me to service it :(

I have 2012 Tener and I've been refuling at 130 miles but when I go to fill up I've noticed that I have 2 Gallons left. Do I need to to do something special to get to those 2 Gallons

Is your reserve light flashing? I find mine starts flashing pretty early. I can comfortably get 200 miles out of a tank though. I think I would just keep riding at least another 40 miles. Those 2 gallons aren't hidden...you can still ride without running out of gas.

I imagine that are all Super Tenere's are somewhat different but they shouldn't be by much. As an FYI I purchased a new 2018 in February of 2019 & I now have alittle over 2000 miles on it. My mpg has been anywhere from 46.7 to 49.2 but mostly in the 46/47 area. I filled up one time at 240 miles & took 5.1 gallons on a 6.1 tank so I'm extremely happy. My light will start flashing at around 180 miles but I know that I can get at least 250 if not more on a tank. I traded in a 2014 FJR on this bike & it was the same way as that light would come early also in fact on the FJR it started flashing when I had 1.5 gallons left on a 6.6 tank. I would be extremely surprised if you couldn't get 250 miles & still have a half of a gallon left.

I probably put the 3.6 quarts in. I would advise putting in a lesser amount than capacity and then adding until you get close to the fill line. You don't want to overfill it. I think that's what I did when I first did the oil change. I developed a leak in the oil filter, which was since cured.

You have to start the engine for a few seconds after you put in about 50% of all oil. It Will look like it is full, but when you start it up the pump Will move the oil to 2 :nd room. 2 drainpluggs! 🤓

it leaked because you didn't smear some oil on the 0 ring gasket on the filter, you just done it again too.no need to flip or change the crush washer either. and what in God's name is 4.4 quarts? what century are we in? (4.4 is metric anyway)

Judging from the amount of oil drained, I would say that the drain bolt to the rear was to the oil pan.

Lots of satisfied users of Rotella. Over 100,000 miles in my VFR and it was fine. I'm still using it now. The Tenere has about 27,000 miles on it. I don't mind taking the plastic skid plate off as it's only 4 exposed bolts and it would make the oil filter less messy.
