Changing the Transmission Fluid & Filter On My 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500

I changed the transmission fluid & filter on my 1998 Silverado K1500. All in all it was not a hard thing to change; it took me roughly 2 hours to do.

Just changed mine for the first time, and it took me about 2 hours. I'm hoping changing the gasket fixed my leak. Fluid went everywhere and cleaning the pan slowed time down just a bit😂

if you dont have a magnet in your pan, put a microwave magnet underneath the pan , will catch all the metal flakes

I have the same transmission, it's stupid the trans oil pan don't have a drain plug.. so had to buy one with a drain plug. Makes the trans oil changes much easier!!

My transmission actually starting acting up real bad here recently so I took it to a local shop and they rebuilt it to handle 500hp. Torque converter shutter got real bad.

I appreciate it man. Ya, so far, so good. Just make sure when you're filling it up you check the dipstick periodically so that you don't over fill it.

@bossadamsgarage do you fill up the transmission oil with the truck turned off? And then start the truck to check if the dipstick is full? Wouldn’t it damage transmission if it was to low or overfilled by turning it on to check?

Do you feel as though only having it lifted in the front affected how much fluid came out? I only have 2 ramps and would like to do my fluid but am concerned that I won't get out as I could have if it were level. I figure since the entire pan is being removed it should all come out, unlike the engine oil pan where there is only a bolt being removed.

When you remove the pan, all the fluid should come out. There could be a special case, but I have never heard of anything like that. Just make sure you're very careful when you drop the pan and have all the parts ready to be installed!

I got a 97 Chevy Silverado I left home to work I reverse and it was good got to the shop and was trying to reverse to my spot and it wouldn't go felt embarrassed cuz there was cars pilling up so I put it in drive and went around now my truck can only go forward no reverse if I stop at a store to buy a soda and I go back to my truck I have to start it and a couple of minutes so I can drive if I start it and try to peel off it kind of jukes any help

I did not replace it. Could you replace it? Sure, but mine looked fine so I just made sure everything was clean and reinstalled the new filter with no issues.

I do not, I did go with a Fel-Pro gasket though. I purchased it through Autozone bc it was a little bit cheaper than online.

How many miles does transmission have when you service the transmission?

Mine has 115,000 which is a little over the recommended 60,000-100,000.

That fluid was crazy low.. wow About 5qt should have came out Also the new filter should have looked exactly like the old one.. if was all plastic the new one should have been all plastic But great video

How did you remove the filter gasket?

The old gasket is removed easiest by keeping it moist and using a razor blade to scrape off the old residue.

That's a pretty self explanatory step. Put the gasket on, bolt the pan back. Nothing too it.

you are. on these older trucks that don't have a tow mode, you drop it into third to keep the overdrive from kicking in. number one problem on these 4L60Es, people towing in drive.

@@quinnreed2462 no worries. Another thing to avoid is doing a hard acceleration while in overdrive. GM programmed these to do an "aggressive downshift " where it'll drop from 4th to 2nd. It can damage the sun gear.
