Everybody cuts their strings, I don't. I just make them loose enough and then take them off as they are. You can even re-use them if the other one snaps or if you're not sure which one will sound better. My favorite string is the Aquila red series low G. I use this low G on my uke, the others are Aquila Lava strings.The red one has copper mixed into it and therefor isn't metal wound. It has big advantages to me as it makes stretches much less "scratchy" on the fretboard, though still hearable (the texture is kind of like paper). It's also easier to press down because I noticed that with a metal wound string, you easily accidentally mute the string.

I have black strings as well. When I learned in 4th grade I had used the school ukes, and the strings were white so when I got my uke and it had black strings I loved it. I still use that uke but I won't tell you how many years (or months) I have had it.

Whenever they start sounding dull is a good indication to change them!:) other times you may find the uke is going out of tune a lot more than usual and that can be a sign as well!
