Yeah even if you didn't know about the Michael Jackson sketch, this "technical error" feels... sketchy if you may pardon the pun. The fact that it was coincidentally all fixed as the credits started and with little apology or effort to get back to where the program was before the crash, plus the continuity announcer saying what's on next instead of "please stay with us, we'll be back in a mo" like every other normal error.

What bad luck. Quick thinking from Channel 4 to pull this. I know it wasn’t really a ‘technical difficulty’, but what else could they do? They couldn’t claim the joke was in bad taste because the whispers of Michael Jackson’s passing had not yet been confirmed, so they’d have really dropped the ball if it had turned out to be a misunderstanding. Forgive me if this sounds inappropriate, but there’s actually something amusing about this video. I just have visions of a studio manager yelling “just say something, for crying out loud”.

I have seen this a number of times since I first commented below, and I realize that they couldn't show that part as MJ was near death at that point and that a "funny" sketch would have been in very bad taste, but it still irks me that they didn't explain what was really going on and that it was not just a "loss of program". They could have put a correct card up to explain the situation a little more accurately. It wasn't just "programme will continue in sound only, " (which it so OBVIOUSLY didn't); or it also wasn't "programmes will continue shortly, (which this program DEFINITELY did not), but they could have found some kind of card to accurately explain the situation tactfully, instead of leaving everyone who did not know what was going on until later, TOTALLY in the dark.

I know this comment is years old, but I agree. They could of put up a card saying : “we’ve had reports of a death of a celebrity. This person was due to be featured in the following sketch, but due to this we felt as if If it wouldn’t be in a good nature to air this as it could of been seen in a poor taste.“ It saves so much annoyance and it also makes everyone aware of what is going on.

This was a “planned breakdown” because of a sketch of Michael Jackson in the programming when the actual Michael Jackson was either pronounced dead or is dying. And they should’ve told people what was happening.

That doesn't clear anything up at all. It just adds to the confusion. If this had happened a couple of days after Michael Jackson (AKA MJ) died then they would have shown an edited version of the programme or shown a different programme. The point is, this was being broadcast at the same time as Michael Jackson was either dead or dying.

What I meant was that I agreed with you about what you said about them showing another program entirely and so on. I think they should have told the truth about what was apparently going on with MJ at that point and that that was the reason for the slide being shown instead of the show.

because at the time, it was near the end of the show and Channel 4 had just gotten wind that Jackson had literally collapsed on stage and was literally dying.

XTheVideoGamerGirlX Incorrect. Michael Jackson did not collapse on stage, he was found in his bedroom by his physician (I think? Correct me if I am wrong) and the physician called down and told the place where Michael was staying at to call an ambulance. However, they weren’t told who it was for and the urgency of the ambulance. Meanwhile, the physician is giving CPR to Michael on the bed (which isn’t recommended as it isn’t a flat surface- this meant that his actions for CPR were almost rendered useless as without a flat surface, it doesn’t have much of an impact and it won’t make much of a difference and it wouldn’t of benefited Micheal.) Eventually an ambulance arrived and he was taken to hospital where shortly after he was pronounced dead. Hope this clears things up a little better!

Basically, This was a couple of days after MJ died and in this sketch they took the piss of MJ and Channel 4 were scared about it offending people. That's why they cut the program! This episode of TNT was pre recorded before MJ died. Hope that clears it up..

@eddief32 Why would Channel 4 do that? Big Brother is an Endemol show, it would be up to them to censor or remove anything and they would have their own captions for these things. I only remember Big Brother being taken off air once due to content in the way you describe and that was when there was violence in the house. I am unsure if the programme really did come off air and Channel 4 showed something else or if the programme remained and just showed an external shot of the house.

The continuity announcer could have given the reasons for this and also they shouldn't have put "in sound only" when there obviously was no sound and viewers were left hanging wondering why no sound when that card was up.

@jeffrey44 It would also be used during programmes like Big Brother, as occurred once when a housemate wrote something down and tried to show it to the camera - the message contained something which would have been offensive, if memory serves me correctly, and channel 4 killed the broadcast to audio only.

They cut the picture and kept it to audio and I think it was cos one of the housemates had wrote down who he/she was gonna vote out and of course that was a huge no no via big brother's rules.

The point of 4+1 is to show the same programming with an hour's delay - but they have *chosen* to run that in such a totally automated way that they couldn't prevent the same messy sudden interruption being shown again, am I right? They had at least 30 minutes before the programme began on 4+1 in order to find a cleaner point at which to opt-out! As for not mentioning MJ - if viewers didn't know about it at that point then surely there's no danger of offending anyone through "sensitive timing"

A national broadcaster has adequate options if contigency strategies are properly thought out. That is the problem here - they simply did not know what to do. Wrong caption, no filler music or programming and a man paid to tell us absolutely nothing. Very poor.

Bleh - very badly handled. Especially to have exactly the same on 4+1 an hour later! The caption made no sense. The announcer *could* have quoted their news provider ITN in saying "there are reports singer Michael Jackson has suffered a heart attack - as such we felt it inappropriate to continue with this part of the programme". Instead they are paid to sit and occasionally state the bloody obvious - while themselves looking at a meaningless caption.

They could of even said this: “Michael Jackson has reportedly been taken to hospital , and to which nature why don’t know but because he was due to be imitated in this next sketch we thought airing it would be in poor taste, and with that we decided to pull it from airing. We’ll bring you more updates on this, as and when they come.” It literally made no sense, like you’re saying. They ended up just having people at home sitting and wondering what on blooming earth has happened, and with that, they further fuelled rumours which didn’t help.

Because they did a skit implying that Michael Jackson hired several "lookalikes" and would have them go and do press confrences or signings etc and it was in bad taste because Jackson literally had passed a few minutes after the TNT show had just started to go into that skit.

At the time, Channel 4, a UK channel, an hour ago, at the time, aired a sketch show called TNT. During a particular sketch at the end of this episode of TNT, they had a sketch where they interviewed Micheal Jackson. On their partner channel, Channel 4 +1 (same shows, just an hour late.), tragedy struck behind the scenes. During the +1 airing of TNT, Micheal Jackson was dead or dying in a hospital probably in London. The people who run Channel 4 pulled the show off the air immediately after news began circulating. After the episode, it is believed to have cut straight to Channel 4 news on both channels, or at least that’s my opinion. I was like 4 at the time... Now, Channel 4 might seem nice here. Wrong. A few years later, they aired Leaving Neverland, for the UK. It’s a documentary about Micheal Jackson allegedly raping kids. Whilst it’s obviously wrong, the allegations I mean, it didn’t stop Channel 4 pissing off a lot of MJ fans....
