Hi Matt, I just wanted to chime in and say how much I enjoy your videos. All the work you put in is really appreciated! I especially love the complete artist breakdowns (Marianne Faithfull, Lovin' Spoonful, Peter & Gordon...). There are so many artists I hope you get around to doing something similar for one of these days. Top of my list might be Chad & Jeremy (interesting comparison to Peter & Gordon and then sharp turn into Psychedelia!). The Cowsills (fascinating story and great pop music) and The Move (another interesting story full of twists & turns but lots of great music). But I'm sure you have enough work to do without fielding "requests". Whatever you come up with I'll continue to look forward to the next episode! Thanks, dave g.

Keep up the great work, Matt! One group that I think flew under the radar in the 60s was Pearls before Swine, Led by Tom Rapp. Rarely is a group so dedicated to mystical experience or unity consciousness in music. The first album I heard was Balaklava. The first song began, “I saw the world spinning like a toy….” and I felt transported into outer space and thus began my ethereal experiences with his band. Perhaps inconsistent but some brilliant work mixed in. Bernie Taupin and Elton John said that Rocketman was “stolen” from Tom Rapp, who had previously written and recorded a song with the same title. I would be fascinated, Matt, if you would do a selective retrospective on a few songs of Pearls before Swine. I think of them as an underground band because so few people I know have heard them. Again, whatever you choose to present I know will be a thrill for your fans. It’s extremely rare to have the KZbin ratio of thumbs up to thumbs down that you have. Finally, I wonder if you have already done a video explaining how you were involved in the 60s music scene. You seem to have quite a bit of first-hand experience. Or is it simply your scholarly research?
@popgoesthe60s523 жыл бұрын
Hello, John. I’ll have to put Pearls Before Swine on my list! I didn’t know about Rocket Man coming from them! My involvement in 60s music comes from being exposed to it at a very young age. I began collecting at age 13 and haven’t stopped. I’ve been researching heavily for about 15 years and decided to share some of my knowledge via KZbin. Thanks for the comment!

I really enjoy your channel. It's informative, well-researched, and nicely presented. The fact that you engage in conversation with viewers in the comment section, even if they have a different opinion than yours, elevates your channel above similar ones that are created by wackos that have no interest in anyone else's opinion. Music history is complex; no one knows everything, and sometimes there is more than one answer to any question. I also appreciate that this isn't a channel devoted to showing off recent re-released super-exclusive colored vinyl purchases that no one in their right mind would waste money on. Hi Matt, really enjoying your dissection of 60's pop culture and of course the Beatles. I particularly respect your mature and balanced commentary, which with so many Beatle fans is rare as theres always a 'favourite Beatle' who needs some kind of defending.. as a cheeky suggestion for future items you could cover the 'hype' over the Klaatu album 347:est, which looking back was ridiculous but at the times taken quite seriously as a Beatles comeback secret. And also the avant garde McCartney inspired 'Carnival of Light' which was made well before John discovered the medium... im sure your thoughts and comments on both would be well worth watching. Keep up the good work. Chris - York UK. YBAS (York Beatles Appreciation Society)

Really enjoy the content here, Matt, and your low key approach. I may have a thing or two to contribute, being 69 soon and having gone from loving The Beach Boys, et al, in 62’, to the Beatles, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Byrds , The Who, etc etc and then almost overnight it seemed, to Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Lived in Chicago in the 60’s and early 70’s and was able to catch a lot of great concerts as a teen (with a paranoid eye on curfew and the Chicago cops.) Anyway, look forward to exploring around here and throwing out a few comments.

Hey Wally, thank you for the nice comment. Did you catch any live shows at the Kinetic Playground (originally called Electric Theatre) on the corner of Clark & Lawrence? I understand several great bands came through there.
@heywally27393 жыл бұрын
@@popgoesthe60s52 Yes Matt, a few, with the highlight being The first American tour of Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, billed with Vanilla Fudge (left early in their set because of curfew fears - I was 16) as the "headline" act. We sat on the floor, $5. It was like seeing these bands at a high school. Had already heard Zeppelin (wow) but not JT - they were the big surprise for me and I went out and picked up the "This Was" album the next day. They used to run two sets in those days (at the other main regular concert venue also, the Aragon) that didn't finish until 2 or 3AM but being young, I had to do the first shows. I don't want to bore people (but I will) but my first major show was Cream in 68' (at the terrible Coliseum). Other bands I saw/loved at various venues in the 60's and early/mid 70's were Jefferson Airplane/Blue Cheer, Ten Years After (wow), Pink Floyd (wow), James Gang, ELP (wow), Alice Cooper/Stooges, Yes (wow), Frank Zappa, Chicago (when they weren't a pop act) and others. Big concert misses that I should have done were Hendrix and especially, The Who at the Kinetic, when they did Tommy. :( Would have loved to have been a little older back then (except I'd be even older now) and gotten to see bands like the Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful, Buffalo Springfield. Anyway, thanks again. - Mike. (Wally was our dog)

Great channel! Ever thought of doing interviews? I think you could have some interesting conversations. How many primary sources have never told their story, or only told it once? I'm personally fascinated with the recording methods used in the 60s. Whether it was several bounces between two tape machines or one purely live take, it's all amazing to me. I think it helps us to appreciate the era even more.
@popgoesthe60s523 жыл бұрын
I've thought of doing some interviews and I may pursue that, but I am still getting a handle on what I have done so far. The recording process and the difficulties around it back in the 60s is partly why that period produced such great music. Now, it's push a button, get an effect. The ease of recording today doesn't foster much creativity. Thanks for the comment, Ryan!

Keep up the great work! BTW I see behind you the amazing partly live album by Vanilla Fudge, Near The Beginning. What a great album to float away to. Fun fact that very spacey and bizarre track Some Velvet Morning was originally done by Lee Hazelwood and none other than Nancy Sinatra (written by Hazelwood). What an improbable and whacky duo they were! You can imagine her PR person (hired by Frank) recommending she pair up with him as a like "hip" move for her career, it's the up and coming thing etc lol. I know nothing about it that's just how I picture it LMAO.

what i find fascinating about 1960 music is how big of an impact it has made in music. it is still relevant today. some of the recordings are over 50 years old now. people in the 1950s were not following 50 year old music of the turn of the century like we follow the 60s music...
@popgoesthe60s523 жыл бұрын
That's a great observation, Al. In the 60s, my folks listened to 60s music, not Al Jolson. In the 2020s, some younger people listen to 60s music as well so its staying power certainly is noteworthy.

At the very least I think it could make for an interesting discussion topic for you?
