It's an accent if the people you learned English from do it too. Which can be either your parents or peers as both have an effect. That can make it hard to know when some of the people you learned English around do it and others don't. But if some of them do, it's probably just you accurately producing the dialect you heard.

That's because it's not a speech impediment, it's just his accent! He pronounces it the way most people from the South East pronounce it who are not middle or upper class. It used to be the norm for the aristocracy of London too, in the 1800s before their R sound changed again. It's most often heard on TV from Cockney, where nobody ever comments on it I guess because they are used to it being in that accent so their brains don't send an alert for them to pay attention to that sound, whereas because his accent is not a pure Cockney accent suddenly people who aren't from the south east hear an unexpected feature of speech for the accent he has and so they actually notice it. It is NOT a w. W is a bilabial approximant. This is a labiodental approximant. The only people who have a speech impediment, are the ones who mistake his labiodental approximant for a w, and fail to imitate the sound he actually makes. They actually can't even hear or produce the difference between those two sounds.

Yes! From the south east and some other places like Norwich! It is exactly what people are used to hearing in Cockney, but I guess because his accent is not purely Cockney, the sound jumps out at them as unexpected and they consciously notice it. Then they call it a speech impediment. No Cockney speaker ever gets mistaken for having a speech impediment even though they say exactly the same R he does. The weirdest thing is, there are people in the South East who pronounce it the same way he does but STILL believe that he says it wrong just because the media say so. They haven't actually noticed that they pronounce it the same way. Same happens with people who say "street" like "shtreet", some of them notice when other people do it but have no idea that they do it themselves until you ask them to say the same word and listen to it.

My mate speaks the same way as Wossy and it’s just not a thing we ever discuss.
@compulsiverambler13522 ай бұрын
It's just an accent. Cockneys have it too but people don't notice cos they are used to Cockneys on TV whereas Ross's accent is a bit unusual to have on TV, it is not pure Cockney, so people actually notice it cos it is not expected in non-Cockney speech unless you are from the south east and so are used to the fact that it is not only Cockneys who have this R sound. It is also not the same as the W sound. Confusing it for the W sound is a sign that it is not a feature of your native accent, your brain didn't learn English having to tell the difference between those sounds like it did if you have both of those sounds in your accent. People who natively speak an accent with this feature in it can hear the difference easily between bilabial W and labiodental approximant R.
@Sillimant_Ай бұрын
That's because you're a humourless yank
@dingo1376 жыл бұрын
There are some English accents that pronounce r in a different way to the "standard" so it sounds like a w to others but they still pronounce r differently to the way they pronounce w. Not sure if Ross has one of these.
@junbh25 жыл бұрын
People claim that's where it comes from. But then I've also heard people say he has a lisp in addition to that.
@compulsiverambler13522 ай бұрын
It is easy to tell apart from the w sound, to those of us who grow up with an accent like this or surrounded by accents like this. Cockney has the same sound but nobody notices because they are used to hearing Cockney on TV, so the sound doesn't jump out as out of place when heard in the context of a Cockney sentence. W is a bilabial approximant. This sound is a labiodental approximant. I would never confuse those sounds. Interestingly, I do have trouble hearing the difference between this sound and the standard British English R. I can hear it but have to pay attention, my brain is used to translating one sound to the other so that I can understand people who don't speak like me. Even more interestingly, I have asked people around me who have the same pronunciation, confirmed by having them describe what is happening with their mouth when they make the sound, and they somehow believe that they do NOT speak like Jonathan Ross, until I point it out. They are used to translating their own R sound in their minds to the standard, I guess, but when they hear Ross speak, they can hear that he doesn't sound like other people on TV and so will label him as someone who does this, completely unaware that they sound the same way, cos they have never had to hear themselves on TV and compare it directly to the other presenters without that sound.
