Has the Government’s small boats plan put people in Calais off crossing the Channel?

Downing Street is claiming the Home Secretary Suella Braverman didn't approve an email sent in her name blaming civil servants for the failure to stop asylum seekers in small boats.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
She did however step up her rhetoric with an extraordinary warning that billions of people were eager to come to Britain if possible.
Foreign affairs correspondent Paraic O'Brien has spent the day in France meeting some of those waiting out the bad weather for their chance to cross, to see how the UK government’s plan to stop the boats is going down.

As an EU citizen I’m wondering why the EU isn’t doing anything about the illegal migrant camps in northern France and the organized crime that goes with it. The EU shouldn’t allow these illegal crossings and they should be deported already while they’re here.

You can't make people take up asylum in France. You were part of the Dublin Agreement when you were an EU member where it was possible to return people to France. You voted to leave and the oven ready deal you signed extracted yourself from the treaty. It's as much a French or EU problem as it is in Turkey or Libya if people want to cross the Med to Greece or Italy. You didn't want international cooperation, hence Brexit .

@@M.Manique It is this kind of stories that media displayed causing even more anger. Yes, you can dream about coming to UK, but there's legal route. It's hard and many processes, but, duh, so is your life in the country that you are trying to escape. Try the legal route, if you are qualify to 'teach english' (UCAS, IELTS system screening) then, I am sure there will be employment and thus sponsorship. Which is where the government need to tackle, seeking a way to open these professional route, more accessible and affordable (paying thousands of pound to apply working visas is hardly affordable) but then again, these illegal migrant willing to pay that money for gangs to bring them over. Just too much contradictions. Over and all, it is just show of disrespect of border laws and wanting a quick get away without fighting for a legal visa. (that says loudly for the character) As I say it's not just UK, every country's border laws should be respect in the first place. Unless you are prosecuted by the armed force in your country. Same with anti migration sentiment, it doesn't stop the illegal migrants nor the fundamental issue. Stop being left or right, government need to stop the g damn issues with a clear, accessible, affordable processes.

I cannot understand why all the political parties don't work together on this issue. First and foremost, people risking their lives to cross the Channel in rubber boats for an obscene amount of money that is likely going to organised crime, is a problem that needs to be dealt with. A change in the law introduced by the ruling party of the day isn't going to solve it either and a change of government is not going to make the problem go away either. All the political parties need to sit down together and come up with a comprehensive plan and be willing to work with other countries and get them onboard also. This isn't just a UK issue.

He says it was "his dream" to go to UK. That's not a refugee escaping persecution deserving asylum. That's simply an economic migrant. So why doesn't he apply for legal migration? Or apply to US? He seems to have qualifications as a teacher. The problem is that the economies of these countries have developed sufficiently that these people can earn enough to finance their journeys to UK. It would behove us to assist these countries to further develop their economies by infrastructure development like the Chinese are already doing in order to incentivise them to remain at home.

One of the strategies to divert the attention from problems which are very important for the vast majority and are death with to favour elites. And people think about this issue instead of thinking about the important ones. British are really getting caught again in a trap. Poor UK,I used to love it. But after Brexit and now after this love for politicians who do not address the real problems, I am disappointed. Real problems are....the cost of living, the poor quality of medical care, the xenophobia,the Brexit itself with lack of freedom of movement and a reduction in trade, tax heavens, tax evasion,poor quality in education...poor housing...

If the illegal can't land here in small boats are the life guards from the UK going to pick them up in mid sea and let the empty boats float to shore. what are they going to do with the illegals that are already here, stop sweeping them under the carpet or shall I say hiding them up and down the country sending them out at midnight to unready towns then the people of that town find out in the morning when they wake up to find that a bus load of illegals have moved in next door to them. People are looking out for them up and down the country and telling each town and place about them people will know that they are there. We can't keep doing that so what are they going to do with them they must be removed from this country. I have heard of a small island that is empty near the south coast of Africa I think it is called Tristan De Cuna it did belong to England at one time and I think it still does send them there.

The real problem is that like Patel before her, she demonstrably has no interest in addressing the problem. For just as her fellow Brexit Ultras wouldn't have purpose without "Brussels"., she would have no raison detre without a dysfunctional immigration system. She could, for example, spend a minute at her desk addressing the backlog, except that her "government" has cut staff numbers to the bone and won't pay the remaining ones a living wage. She could set up centres to process applications abroad, but won't, because that would deny her the excuse to stoke the ugliest sentiments on the far right, with words such as "invasion" - apparently unaware that even military invaders are entitled to humane treatment under the Geneva Conventions. (Or perhaps I'm expecting too much from a 10th-rate lawyer who falsely claimed to have co-authored a book, and had to take a course on why she shouldn't be using her private email account for official communications - but I digress). If you'd like to know how utterly useless she is in that office, watch her merciless evisceration in Parliament by Yvette Cooper - and weep for a Britain that managed to allow her ilk near any public office. Even if you have no sympathy for refugee claimants, recall how a similar diabolical "policy" by Patel contributed directly to the Covid deaths; for instead of setting up a screening system at Britain's ports of entry, Patel was busy fighting culture wars with immigration lawyers and judges, while countless visitors walked through unscreened for a virus that was already known to have killed millions across the world. So the question for Braverman is: how is your "policy" of deliberate, malign chaos keeping the country safe, not least because most claimants have no choice but to arrive at Britain's ports?

I think its dodgy to say even military invaders to this country are entitled to humanitarian treatment. The last time that happened was at the battle of Britian and the nation was rightley defended. You cannot keep taking in people who dump all their i. D and passports. The bill to house these migrants is now in the billions its not sustainable. But I do agree that centres abroad should be set up you help. But the other issue is we don't know who they are Because theyve no passports! IN which case they shouldn't be as allowed in.
@akpanekpo6025

@@jonsimmons4150 That's your refugee convention, not the Refugee Convention. Nor does any international treaty, never mind the Refugee Convention, contain anything called "humain treatement". Nor was it I who used the term "invaders" (a military term not envisaged by the drafters of the Refugee Convention - hence my reference to the appropriate treaties: the Geneva Conventions) to describe refugee claimants. But you're right in one respect: I can't prove you wrong, but that's because you've already proved yourself to be a stunningly ignorant person, but one driven by your absolute certainties, and thus irredeemably so - which is much worse.
@akpanekpo6025
@akpanekpo6025 Жыл бұрын
@@Jen8973 Mercifully, neither you nor I have a say in the matter (i.e., whether the Geneva Conventions apply to "invaders"). Nor does the government, in fact, for they're international treaties which codify customary international law, and thus bind all governments, whether signatories or not. The Battle of Britain was fought with fighter planes and high-yield bombs, but if you wish to accuse helpless people of that, it's a choice. As for IDs, why not process them abroad, as I suggested? No, Braverman won't, because that would deny her the excuse to label them "invaders", which was my original point. The bill isn't anywhere close to "billions", certainly if you're counting in GBP. But if it is high (which it is - relatively speaking), it's because the "government" has a policy of making them so, by accommodating them in cockroach-infested facilities owned by party donors at extortionate costs - to provoke outrage from people like you. They could be much more cheaply accommodated (and in better facilities too), as a parliamentary committee has long recommended.

It is appalling that people are waiting for years to claim asylum even when they have genuine human rights reasons and genuinely want to work and contribute to the UK economy. Sovereignty means each state gets to decide whom they want in and whom out, or at least it SHOULD mean that. Yesterday I heard some politician saying women from Iran who don't want to wear hijab should still be allowed to claim asylum in the UK. Are you serious? Not wanting to don a piece of cloth is a human rights issue? Shall a woman claim asylum in some African tribe if she wants to go about with an unconverted chest, which isn't allowed in Europe? Should a French or Swiss woman who wants to wear niqab also be allowed to seek asylum in other European countries where niqab isn't banned? After all, if clothing is a human rights issue now, the reverse argument should also apply...
