After the civil war, syrians occupied the country and went on to consolidate power to their allies (Hezbollah). They did that by assassinating every opposing voice, a lot of good people died, journalists were silenced, politicians were killed. Meanwhile hezbollah's weapon arsenal had an open route from Iran through syrian borders and still have. That's no excuse, but reality is always complicated, people were exhausted after the civil war, and many decided to lay down their arms in favor of peace. Now the new generation is more vocal against hezbollah, but the assassinations never stopped even after the syrians left. And hezbollah's militia is too strong to be opposed by the lebanese army or any force within lebanon, so basically the people are being held hostage. Hope that explains it
