Hosting Ukrainian refugees: what happens when it goes wrong?

It's been five months since the invasion of Ukraine began - and almost as long since the launch of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, in which people fleeing war could be matched with host families in the UK.

The scheme started with a flood of requests and offers - and many Ukrainians have settled well into their new homes.
But figures do show a rising number of relationships between hosts and refugees are breaking down. Councils have been given funding to deal with problems - but unofficial groups of volunteers say it's falling to them to do the hard work of mediating and re-homing refugees.

I met a Ukrainian girl last week. She kindly ask me if I could drive her to the church as they set a charity night. She was wearing a Prada jacket when we met then as we walked in she started laughing about the “old or ugly” jackets displayed at the charity! She then wrote a list of furniture that she wants for her flat that she shares with one more person. Full rent paid by the the government…. Sorry but it doesn’t make much sense to me

In Poland refugees go back to Ukraine for Christmas and than come back to be again poor fleeing from war refugees.

I came to Poland 4 years ago but was working with Ukrainians. As of my experience of being the only asian I can say they def racists and horrible ppl. It's dangerous to be the only ppl of color amongst those 💔

we are only seeing one side of the story. some of these people are entitled and ungrateful. My cousin in London had to deal with some of the most racist Ukrainian refugees ever, my cousin has a heart of gold and very empathetic but cultural differences and anti-black sentiments has left her in a position where she'll no longer just take in strangers. like how the F can you be a racist while someone is trying their best to help feed, shelter, & protect you. the caucacity is unbearable.

The minorities in their country are abused, discriminated and overall very badly treated. All minorities - there are communities of Romanians, Russians, etc.. They are discriminated

I am sorry to hear this. I encountered some racist attitudes towards me with some Ukrainian refugees. I am not sure why they want to come here if they cannot embrace multiculturalism. It makes me think twice to provide heartfelt wishes for Ukraine to win this war. Most racist and intolerant people I have ever met.

My girl friend took in in three Ukrainians and things have not gone that well. She raised money for their child got her into a special class in the local school and gave them gifts. One she had an emergency because an employee of hers was not available to clean a flat she rents out and we were not in the country so we couldn’t stand in. She asked if a couple of times they could clean and that she would pay them and they said no. In addition to this we have heard a number of insensitive comments and recently three of the refugees slunk off in secret and found a new place to live not even having the decency of telling their host they were leaving. One of them was in a relationship with a man who lived in a flat in the sake building and she moved her furniture and belongings out without even leaving him a note. As far as we know he is a kind generous and loving man. It is hard not to feel exploited.

Most of the Ukrainian women don't like to work. Their goal is to find a wealthy man(if from a rich country, even better) and their duty would be to make children and be house wife for life. They want a man to be capable to provide for them and their family. They think they are very special and the most beautiful - however, they get quite ugly almost suddenly - after 35 years old or so - fat with reddish face

People are people, and whilst we're all the same, we're all so different. It can't be easy, finding a match that works in all directions. Just because people are fleeing a war, doesn't automatically make them nice and easy going. I hope this woman finds the shelter that she deserves.

Yes, people are people, there are just cultural differences. Education being maybe most important. Problem is that most people accepted refugees for selfish reasons and were thinking they will find good company, show of how good they are or middle aged English man hoping he will find beautiful Ukranian lady etc. The last lady who said that her guests are confrontational, for her the problem was that somebody said to her ,,do this instead of could you help me with this''. Most of it is lost on translation but, she knows that. That is not being confrontational. These people fled the war, you are supposed to help them, not get offended if they are not the same as you. Also , of course they are not confrontational, she is just arrogant and is feeling superior to them and she just think that her way of asking something is the right way.

The Brits wanted to help and still do. The problem is that the programme had to be introduced fast. Yet, now it has to be adjusted.

Why does it say the host family failed? Nice, put the blame on others. We only know one side of the story. Furthermore not even families or friends can live together without major issues arising. You can’t just throw complete strangers with significantly different cultures, customs, characters, expectations, religion and language together and call it a medley. No matter if you receive money for it or not. These people need professional help and support. Leaving home, escaping a war they come with baggage and no civilian is equipped to handle all of that. I have a Ukrainian family staying with me in the US. A woman with 2 kids. (4 year old and a newborn) It's exhausting and a lot to deal with especially when you are complete strangers to each other. We don't get paid for taking in refugees in the U.S. like they do in Europe. Even so I can't imagine just kicking the family out. If you can't handle hosting a family, at least help them find other accommodations.

My house insurance company (AXA) kindly wrote to me stating that if I decided to take a Ukrainian refugee into my home, they would not increase the house insurance bill. I wrote back, thanking them for their kind offer, and asked if they would extend this practice to refugees from Libya, Somalia, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, etc For some reason, they have not written back.

Honestly, I already have a picture in my head of what this couple is like....Probably in their 60s, they have a pretty good middle class life, a pretty big house (400 to 500K kinda house). Either retired or close to it and winding down on their work commitments. Probably a bit out of touch, likes to keep up appearances, the first to tell you how progressive and nice they are (Even though they probably were total assholes in their youth, till the tv told them to stop being so nasty) and kinda just did this on a whim "Oh look at those poor people, Gerald dear, lets have a refugee", probably never once in their head they even thought of the situation as "This is another human being from a war torn country that MIGHT not be able to speak english"...Nope...It's like having a dog innit?

Exactly. I had someone stay for two months. I helped her get a free place at art college this September but because my Landlord in the end said no to me taking part in the Homes for Ukraine scheme I couldn’t let her stay for too long (this was all for free and I would need to get help towards the extra costs soon.) My elderly Mum had to come and stay and because she is shielding the Ukrainian girl had to go to temporary accommodation until the home checks are done on the mansion she is eventually moving to with a retired couple in Canterbury. She left today and never said Thankyou. This really hurt my feelings. Sharing your home with a stranger is hard. You can have the best intentions but miscommunications can can indeed askew things. I spent a lot of time trying to help her over these last months. Anyway I wish her well and at least I was a stepping stone on her path.

I once hosted a person whose house got destroyed by hurricane. It was definitely very difficult to have a complete stranger to stay at my home. People have different personalities and different ways of looking at things which inevitably leads to a conflict. I’m not sure that it’s a good idea to host if you don’t have extra properties that could be used. If you own multiple properties and could for example use your vacation house to host people then that’s great. But living together in one home with complete strangers is definitely not for everyone despite their good intentions

The thing I feel really bad about for Ukraine and the people is that other countries media, companies and governments latched onto the war and made the Ukrainian people's plight into a trend, even a marketing tool for them to say "We're supporting you, we're doing the *right* thing", now that the trend has had it's day people are beginning to move on from it and these poor people have to suffer the consequences of being chewed up and spat out.

I've seen it in so many videos, it's nothing like Ukraine, there's no bombs flying into civilian buildings, hospitals, schools, there isnt thousands of families being thrown into mass graves with their hands tied behind their back, children sexually assaulted in front of their dead parents. The list goes on. Ukrainian's don't hate us or want to protest about Muhammad being shown in a movie because it's "blasphemous." They don't behead teachers over a cartoon. If you want an entire country to live by the Qur'an, don't come to a democratic country. Stay where you are. Ukrainians also didn't want to leave and want to go home.

Ukrainian refugees must find a host family to pay for everything and they have to leave after two years. It's a huge burden on the host family. Ukrainians should be less demanding. UK people are also going through hard times and are extending help at a time when many of them are financially strapped. In Germany, the government is providing refugees with money for food and housing and that is even when they have a full time job. Many businesses are taking refugees without knowledge of German language while other immigrants who spent tons of money learning German are not hired and are still unemployed and can’t get benefits. The refugee I opened my home to (without payment from the government or her) had the nerve to tell me homelessness was a lifestyle and that the German government owed her. As a taxpayer in Germany I found that so insulting. Ukrainians should be careful, for now the whole world is sympathetic towards you, but this really is not our war. The war that began in 2014 began because the Ukrainian government was corrupt and people in the east objected to the fact a leader that was democratically elected was chased out. Russian involvement, of course muddied the situation further and is totally wrong, but this is a conflict that is your responsibility not the West’s and nobody owes you anything!

Baqaqi Pekhebi, I was born and raised in Ukraine. Do you know what I understood just after the war started? There are no honest governments in this world, all of them corrupt. The only difference is the west uses different word to call their corruption. It's lobism. What happened in Ukraine in 2014 was the will of people. I came to the UK as an international student and got on with my host family just fine but I’ve heard stories from other students that their host families restricted them from taking their ham for breakfast (as it was reserved for lunch), taking shower past 10pm, using hot water more than 10 minutes when showering and they even portioned their milk and cereal! The cultural differences are very significant and Brits are more reserved and calculated with their “generosity”. I do understand both however, the young lady who feels like a trophy for being shown around and a lady who doesn’t get “please” or “thank you”

I think it's more to do with the prvilidge of being able to host, i.e. more middle class / and less generous as well as the idea being attractive to people who just want to "show off" as a host but don't understand the commitment.

I can understand if you have a meal planned for the next day and then someone eats the ham, I can see why that would be of concern. Also taking a shower after 10.00 pm is being inconsiderate as far as I am concerned. It’s inconsiderate to your neighbours and others who may be sleeping, including people who have to get up early to go to work or children who have to go to school. And, why do you need to shower for 10 mins. Next time you have a shower time yourself, you will see that 10 mins is a long time to be showering. But having said all that I do get your point, people need to be considered of each other and not just assume people are being unhelpful or mean.

That’s what people in Ukraine do to their guests, treat them super well. Btw most of refugees propose to pay something for the rent (I am in Germany, so at least here it is like that). However, hosts refused to take money with angelic face and promised that the family can stay as much as they need to. And then, they used this totally unequal position to be able to kick people out whenever they want. My boyfriend’s family is like that, both parents dentists, sister is a researcher and has already got job here. The reason to kick them out for the two 80y.o. Germans in a huge house was: we miss our balcony and we need more living space, I like to read on that sofa where you sleep.

This is a horrific but predictable outcome. Like many have said, the government didn't properly think what to do with such refugees and where to place them and its completely on the government, not those families. I am myself a refugee in Ireland but I consider myself lucky as I couldn't dream of a better hosting family and environment. But here many of the families get vetted before taking in a refugee, which is right. Overall I haven't heard of such cases in Ireland but that could be also because majority of the refugees live in the state-provided hotels which is a better idea for the safety reasons.

Around 2.5 mln from East Ukraine moved to Russia. The whole conflict would hadnever happen if Soviet Union was divided differently.

Verifying that a host family is fully compliant with a number of regulations, especially when minors are involved, is a long and complicated process. Not just DBS check for every member of the host family. The responsible host have to go through the same training and checks a boarding school has to go through, so that they know how to deal with problems a minor may encounter e.g. radicalization, bullying, drugs etc. The visa process on the other hand is much simpler, to get as many people in as quickly as possible. This discrepancy means that to get enough host families, they must naturally simplify the process of monitoring the hosts.

In my experience there are quite large cultural differences between Western Europeans & Eastern Europeans. To me it appeared that the Eastern Europeans that I dealt with didn't have great English skills and where very abrupt in their communications which could easily be misinterpreted as a lack of consideration. Add to that these people coming from a war zone and it sure looks like lots and lots of understanding is needed by Western hosts.

What do you mean by "Western Europeans"? Personally the more I get to know Northern Europe and the less I feel I belong to the "West" culturally. What is the "West"? I've been working with Ukranian refugees in Italy and we've had different problems, mainly due to the fact that most of them are obviously traumatised and culturally we expect people to be rather cheerful in casual social situations, which was pratically impossible for them. The only time I saw my Ukranian students smile and be happy was when I brought them cherries after one if them had told me that he could not afford them... They thanked me by sprinting to the toilet to wash them. Obviously they thanked me, too, but we do not expect "please" and "thank you" all the time, not because we're any better than you, simply because we don't use them either if not for major favours. For me a heart-felt smile is more important than all verbal pleasantries and boy how they smiled on that occasion. Aren't we all the product of our own national culture more than of a "Western" one?

@Adam my sister just before Christmas had been asked to help a barrister friend with getting his appointment in London back. He let a woman with two children to stay there for 6 months, locked his personal stuff in a third bedroom letting the woman use 2, but she completely disregarded that rule, moved in the third bedroom, rearranged furniture in the whole appointment and run up enormous bills. When he asked her to move, he actually rented another appointment for her, she refused. She said she already invited guests for a new year celebration.

Those people came from the war zone and have nowhere else to go. They are in a foreign country not knowing anything about it. If someone is unable to show compassion, understanding and provide help that is needed, they should not volunteer to do so in the first place. For me, helping those people to find another accommodation through governmental institution is a bare minimum and telling them to leave abruptly after you offered to help is an evil and heartless thing to do.

The first woman is an absolute liar! I was actually doing a job for the same family she is talking about! The week she arrived,! They went above and beyond to try and make her comfortable in their home! When she arrived the woman picked her up and took her straight to the shops and bought her every thing she needed! A lot of stuff! Clothing , toiletries and even a mobile phone I was there in the home for a week when she was there, she was ignorant and disrespectful to her hosts! She was not happy because the house she was staying in was i About 5 miles from the town where she knew other Ukrainian people she knew! And she also thought the money form the government that was paid to put a roof over her head was for her to have! She left without telling the people who put her up in their! Now we have charity adverts asking for £27 to donate to Ukrainian refugees. The main reasons why most people took in refugees in the first place was because of the money incentive being offered to potential hosts. People here already are struggling financially due to the cost of living crisis. The host who wanted to go on holiday for 3 weeks and wanted the family to move out maybe heard stories of other people taking over their homes under squatters rights or maybe they just wanted the incentive money to go on holiday.

You can't treat people like they are 'novelties,' something to 'show off' to your virtue-signalling friends, something to be 'dropped' when the novelty wears off. That's just patronizing and ill-mannered and in that case one is doing something ostensibly good but for the wrong reasons. As for difficulties - we are all human and we all have feelings and opinions. And we all make mistakes. So everybody has to work together in stressful times and find a suitable compromise when differences and difficulties arise. Easier said than done, I know. I'm pretty set in my ways so I know straight away I'd be unsuitable for this kind of thing...

How else can you show what a wonderful caring family you are. And how generous. So they were twats, but why did she run away, and into a large city of all places? Am I wrong in thinking that there's a huge chunk of this story missing? Wasn't she in Scotland initially, then ended up in Brum? It tells one side of the story, her side, and we don't have any idea as to why the relationship broke down, other than that they liked to take her out.

Very commendable these ones that can open up their homes and offer hospitality. It’s not easy sharing your home with another family, add a language barrier and cultural differences makes it that little harder, but well said ,show “patience” , and make an agreement from the outset regarding the duration of the stay, which is to be respected (of course excluding extreme cases). Not right to leave someone in the lurch like that with nowhere to go.

@@clincpb8903 I guess in the UK would be the case, I forgot about that. Although that sum would just about cover the increased food, energy costs etc a month for a visiting family. That would benefit the families who have the space in their homes but low on resources. No doubt however there are also those who would like to milk the government incentive.

@@clincpb8903 350 per month is way below the usual rent for a small room in Britain! Most of the tenants also pay their utility bills on top of that. Add to it the stress of having strangers in your house - noise, their own presence, problems, etc... And don't forget: most of the hosts take the refugees around to doctors, Jobcentre, shops, cultural outings, etc etc. Try yourself to host somebody and this will clear your head.

Birmingham is a very long way from Scotland, even if her host family was horrible, its very strange to go all that far south, what was the reason she didn't go to Glasgow or Edinburgh, what is the government doing to those host families who put their refugees they got paid to take in out on the street? This is the very reason a better vetting system should have been in place for those strangers coming together, its all fine when people know one another but with complete strangers it's very hit and miss.

If so maybe they were fed up with paying for international calls to Ukraine everyday. Can understand her wanting to speak to her parents but everyday and sometimes twice a day.....if this was done on the host families phone line that is taking lthe **** and am not surprised they said to leave. Anyone being reasonable would have just called twice a week.

It's a very sad situation. I've travelled and stayed in a number of people's houses over the years (the people of which I did not already know) and it is a bit of a lottery. The problem is explained in this video that once the novelty of having a guest wears off, then the guest is just treated as though they are in the way. It can be quite scary as a guest because you don't know really what you can or can't do. When people say 'make yourself at home', they don't really mean it. People have too many routines that when disturbed triggers nasty reactions. These refugees would be better off with some single house owners who are lonely because then at least the novelty will last longer. If you haven't been a guest in a stranger's house for more than a few days, then you don't know what it is like or how hurtful some rules or comments can be. I once turned up to a house in Finland (in the middle of nowhere with a couple who had HelpX guests). When I arrived, the family were out and only the two other guests were there. When the family got back, they just completely ignored the fact that I had arrived, put me in the tiny spare room and just sat watching some trashy TV shows in the living room. I just walked out the next morning. At least I had that option. I feel very sorry for refugees like this girl who had no money.

Concerning culture differences (that is at the end of the video), as Ukrainian (I'am not a refugee though), I can understand why British people can felt offended sometimes of how the Ukrainians speak to them. First of all, the Ukrainians very rarely speak proper English, and therefore they can sound blunt. And second, while in English you make an offers, suggestions and so on with modals to sound more tentative, in Ukraine people don't really use such forms speaking to strangers, especially working class people from the East and South of the Country. They are quite straightforward, which can be perceived as rudeness, but they usually don't mean it.

As someone familiar with Russian and Ukrainian people/ culture - Ukrainians belong alongside Russians. Mentality, language, connection, etc, is fully aligned - this is very important! And Westerners will never understand the mentality between Russians and Ukrainians! Also, some Ukrainians need to stop deluding themselves, those who want to be in the EU, want to be there because they THINK that they will become wealthier, plus maybe some other conveniences the bloc gives them (although, imo, the EU is morally and financially bankrupt). The sad part is, they have been pushed into a war because of this and largely because politicians told them that it’s in their interest.

Trying to look for something else and going so far as to breaking ties, is quite silly in my opinion. Unfortunately this inevitably gets political. But I also don’t understand when you (and other Ukrainians) say “we”, “we want to be closer to Europe”, etc. The reality is that Ukraine is divided between Russian speakers who want closer ties with Russia and Ukrainians. I would like to emphasise the period pre-2014, when Yanukovych was the legitimate president (elected free and fairly). Those in KIEV, overthrew him with the help of fascist groups and foreign politicians (I.e. Viktoria Nuland), I won’t go into much detail but Ukrainian sovereignty, constitutional law and electoral law had been violated by those foreign actors and those active in the violence overthrowing Yanukovych. Those people who took out Yanukovych without consideration of their other countrymen, is something really disgusting and selfish. This is why we have democratic elections and not coups, so there can be a peaceful transfer of power, which doesn’t break the constitution and therefore doesn’t impede the sovereignty and threaten the territorial integrity of the country. This is why I encourage you to rethink using the word “we” in such context.
