I will say this for the Flamingo section. The musical piece, The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns, was originally written as a joke. So much so that the composer did not let the piece get published until after his death. So while the animation is silly, that actually falls in line with the concept of the music as well. Just a tidbit that might bring some understanding I hope.
@ToonReel001
@ToonReel001 7 жыл бұрын
Heh, that actually is a meaningful tidbit. I mean it's not the animation is BAD or anything either, it's nicely drawn and paced (all by one animator I might add) it's just not in tone with the artistry of the two films. But adding to the idea it's a 'gag composition' could make for a clever in joke to it's legacy.

I was 9 when the movie came out. I love the flamingo bit. As an adult, I understand Doug's opinion but I also understand the animator's decision with the short. Thanks for the tidbit.

Another fun fact is that the entire segment was animated by one person! Eric Goldberg was the animator (he also directed the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment).

the firebird suite is one of the most fun, interesting, and epic pieces of music i've ever played (or heard)! when i was in high school our band director played this and the first movie for us in class, skipping the non-musical parts, and used it as an example of learning how to see and feel music, instead of just hearing and knowing technically how to make it.

I'd love to see another Fantasia film. I think it would be great.
@GilliganKrueger0829
@GilliganKrueger0829 Жыл бұрын
I agree, with modern animation mixed with SO MANY other pieces of music, I think more films would be fantastic. The problem is I just feel like the type of movie Fantasia is just doesn't really have enough of an audience to generate a reasonable profit. It's a very artsy kind of movie, and I think a lot of people don't really care for such a film that is a little less conventional in storytelling. In our internet age where everything can be given to us in no time at all, a movie that requires the sort of patience and thought Fantasia asks for just wouldn't keep enough people interested. Kids nowadays who are kept entertained with smartphones in general I feel would be to restless to maintain interest. So yes, I too would love more Fantasia films, but the sad reality is I don't think producing more would be a good business move on Disney's part. Though I would be over the moon with ecstasy if one day I'm proven wrong...

@@GilliganKrueger0829 To be honest, with the advent of Disney+, I think Fantasia would work better as a series of short subjects made for Disney+, sort of like Star Wars Visions or something similar. Obviously, another Fantasia film might not ever happen on the big screen. But a Disney+ series would be phenomenal!

Out of every animated Disney movie, the animation here is by far the most different of any others. Many segments don't even look like what would come to mind with Disney animation, and I really admire that. My only big problem with the movie is the runtime. The movie could have really benefited from having at least one more segment, such as the deleted Clair De Lune segment from the past. 75 minutes just makes for a really short modern film, especially considering the length of the original Fantasia. But it's still one of my favorite animated Disney films. It may not be a very popular Disney movie, but I really appreciate it for its variety, much like how I really appreciate Make Mine Music and Melody Time.

"Fantasia 2000" is a great experience of seeing the 21st century of animation. Even though I did not enjoy the celebrities in the Segway and they should've have the narrator like the original did. However, it's a fantastic experience for putting some musical hits into an art that we wanted to see in the big screen. It could be the top like "Fantasia" because there are some few animated shorts that attached like the original and it was a great experience. Nice going Steve Martin for ruining the presentation.

Love it for what it is. Don't hate it for what it isn't. WORTHY follow up to the first film, in achieving what Walt first wanted, (new Fantasia editions) and creative in that it provides new material presented in a new way, but respectful in that it reflected what we already knew, making it feel comfortable and familiar. The celeb appearances used to introduce each segment make complete sense for modern film. Classical conductors simply would not appeal to a mainstream audience. It's called marketing. Plus, they were fun. I personally loved it. ALL of it. NOT as much as the original (it's THE ORIGINAL, and without it, this one wouldn't exist) but it more than earns respect for being both it's own property and a film that fits comfortably in line.

Honestly, I watched Fantasia 2000 when it came out and I was about six. As annoying as the celebs are to me now, back then they were what really kept me going. It's an introduction to the art the animators admire to kids, who are still disneys main audience. And if you love animation and classical music, you can watch it for that, too. Yes, refering to Dali as the melting clocks guy seems condecending but it's what actually stuck with me as a kid because that was something i've seen before (especially the melting clocks were way commertialised and I knew at least two people who owned actual clocks in this design). Could there have been a more Bill Nye approach to the matter of art history? Yes, but I think it still does the job!

I watched this a lot more than Fantasia and every time the animation stopped, I fast forwarded until the next one. Although, I probably watched the Penn and Teller part since I love magic.

I hope Disney makes another Fantasia movie. Especially with how far they come with 3D computer animation, imagine how gorgeous that would be.

I agree 100% that they should've had just one person hosting the entire program. You had four very good picks: James Earl Jones, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, and Angela Lansbury. Any one of them would've brought the same level of dignity to Fantasia 2000 that Deems Taylor brought to Fantasia. You want to know who I would've chosen to host the entire thing, even above those four? Get ready for this. Mark Elliott, the man who voiced all those Disney preview bumpers on those old DVDs and VHS tapes. "Coming soon to own on video and DVD." Tell me you didn't just read that in his voice! R.I.P. Mark.

I guess the difference between the two is that the first Fantasia was more an artistry piece, and Fantasia 2000 feels more like a cartoon character piece. We have stuff like Mickey and Donald and the Flamingo with the yo-yo take up a lot of the movie, the intermissions are much more whimsical and filled with familiar faces to the general public instead of just the music industry, and as Doug mentions even some of the more abstract pieces end up being kinda character driven. Not to say the first film didn't have some cartoony sequences, but a lot of it was more earnest and focused on elegant sound to visual syncing (despite the second arguably having a more impressive variety in art styles). I remember this being a reason some of the other Disney sequels, even the good ones felt a bit distant from their predecessors, which were designed to be more experimental art pieces while these days people connect Disney's animation with bringing whimsical characters to life (eg. compare the first and second Bambi for example).

I think this film probably appeals to a wider range of people than the first one. The first one seems pretty niche, especially today when people aren't patient enough for it and don't appreciate how revolutionary it was. 2000 tries a lot harder to invite kids and newcomers and the shorts are a little more inclusive too (less slow).

+Steven Bowser Yeah, that's sort of why the first Fantasia didn't do well financially in 1940. Too many people thought it was too "pretentious".

InvaderPet That's probably true. But you and I know--and anyone ctiriquing movies knows--that it is an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking. Revolutionary and wonderful. But the average moviegoer doesn't really read into things like that, they just want a good time. Things were slower back then, and that film may be slow even for its time. But I'm not an expert.

Wished Disney would make medium-lenght features like Fantasia, but based on some iconic (and maybe underrated) classical pieces: Respighi's "Roman Festivals", Harty's "The Children of Lir", Rachmaninoff's "The Isle of the Dead", Dvorak's 9th Symphony...

"The Firebird Sweet" piece now suddenly feels like Disney tried competing against Hayao Miyazaki. And almost beat him. Well, almost, but not quite. :)

Honestly, I didn't mind the celebrity cameos. Yeah they didn't fit in at all but I thought of them as little breaks in between segments. I was 11 when I saw this for the first time and I thought Steve Martin & Penn & Teller were funny enough

It's been 11 months, so maybe you've seen it by now? If you haven't... You may find it a bit slow moving. It really is about appreciating music and art. If you're into those, you'll likely find it beautiful. I understand that not everyone has a long attention span, so it isn't for everyone. BUT if you stick around long enough, there actually is some very dramatic scenes. Like Fantasia 2000, it's separated into sequences with no dialogue. They have their own unique way of telling the stories. Personally, I find it stunning! I prefer it to Fantasia 2000, but enjoy that one as well. :)

Your biggest issue with this follow up seems to be the celebrity cameos/live action sequences...and I agree, but only to an extent, as I think you are ignoring something very relevant here...those bits were included for today's audience, the same people who gripe that that similar sequences from the first film were 'dull and uninteresting'...so they had celebs do it this time around, to appeal to a wider audience...and KIDS. The Bette Midler line of 'the melting clocks guy' is directed to KIDS, so THEY will know who she is speaking of...and that's fine, by me, I get it...it's meant to appeal to everyone, and that groaner of a 'duh' line is NOT so much for kids, who likely have NO idea who Salvador Dali IS. Oh, and you have a problem with a flamingo with a yo yo...but hippos in tutus and alligators in capes attempting to woo them is just fine? REALLY?...;) Overall, I feel those minor, tiny aspects from this film are not even worth considering, when you take into account how brilliant and true to the original the rest of it all was. FUN FACT: There was supposed to be an inclusion of an animated Little Match Girl set set to the third movement of Nocturne from String Quartet No. 2 in D Major by Alexander Borodin. as well, but it was overly long and released as a short instead...and it's GORGEOUS. I would include a link here, but KZbin now blocks comments with links in them, so please just search for 'Disney's Little Match Girl' here on KZbin to see it, there are multiple posts of it. It's WONDERFUL.
